Chapter 159: A visit from the beta

In one of the guest rooms in the High Tower, the air was thick with tension as the Moonwillow guests gathered to discuss how they would get a meeting with the Alpha, to settle the long-standing feud, and deal with that woman who had betrayed them after everything they had done for her.

Without their pack, she would still be rotting in that no-good orphanage, or worse, among the packless, carrying random pups every year. But Beta Eliot and his wife had been nothing but generous to her, giving her a home and a family, and in the end she had repaid their kindness with nothing but disappointment and humiliation. And when they gave her exactly what everyone believed she deserved, she had turned around and betrayed them.

"I am going to kill that wench," Evan gritted furiously, pacing the length of the room while the rest sat in a heavy, suffocating silence, his Alpha aura blazing through the air and draining the ease from every soul present.

Even Leni, his own mate, couldn’t fight it and kept her head bowed, her fingers curling slowly into fists against her thighs beneath the table where no one could see them. Four years. It had been four years, and yet that woman still somehow managed to hold so much influence over her man that he would always end up needing her in some way or another, and the thought made Leni’s jaw tighten until it ached.

Only this time Viola hadn’t come running to help him the way she would have in the past, always eager to give Evan whatever he needed.

This time she had dared to turn her back on them entirely and acted as though she had never been a part of their pack at all. Leni clenched her fingers tightly in her lap to suppress the rage rising inside her at the fact that after everything, after all of it, Viola had still ended up above her. The position of supreme Luna was incomparably higher than any other position, and the thought of it was suffocating.

Having Evan pace the room more than a hundred times back and forth was beginning to make Leni dizzy, and she silently wished he would just stop.

"Evan, I think—" Leni began, but Evan silenced her with a sharp raise of his hand, as though telling her this was not the moment.

He had no interest in hearing any of her suggestions, they were never of any real use to him. She didn’t have the sharp mind he needed, nor did she carry the kind of position that would help him achieve the goals that had brought him all the way here. He loved Leni, but he preferred it when she stayed silent during moments like this, because her words always came out embarrassingly shallow, the kind that came from a place without careful thought, unlike that woman’s.

How dare Viola end the call on him and deny their pack to his face? After everything he had done for her, she dared to repay him like this? A nobody like her had absolutely no right to stand between him and the supreme Alpha, a man whom Evan had every intention of befriending on this visit.

He didn’t need to see it firsthand to know that Viola had used her scheming ways to manipulate the supreme Alpha into giving her the position she now held. And if he could just get a word alone with Sebastian, Evan was confident he could dismantle that scheme entirely by revealing to him exactly who and what that woman truly was.

Viola was nothing but a snake. She would do nothing but destroy the people around her and become unbearably possessive in a suffocating way that would grow so oppressive it would turn any man’s stomach. No man wanted a woman constantly breathing down his neck, and if Evan could just get that conversation with the supreme Alpha, everything would fall into place.

"We have to think carefully about how to arrange a meeting with the supreme Alpha, Beta Eliot," Evan said, turning his gold eyes to the man who sat with a look of pure disbelief on his face, still unable to process the fact that Viola had rejected their family so openly. "I don’t care how we go about it, but we need to have a word with him."

"I agree entirely, Alpha. That girl is not fit to be the supreme Luna who will rule over every other packs in our world. She doesn’t even come from a clean background, nor does she have a wolf. If we can’t reach the supreme Alpha directly, we can take the matter to the elders. I am certain not many here would want her sitting on that throne."

Evan was thoughtful for a moment before giving a slow nod. "You are right. She is a nobody, and from the records, no supreme Luna has ever risen from a rootless background. We need to dig out her past and expose her dirty ways to the people here, because I have a strong feeling that with that woman in the supreme Luna position, that petty feud from years ago will never be resolved. Viola is a very petty and—"

Evan didn’t get to finish his words when a sharp, firm knock landed on the door, and every pair of eyes in the room snapped toward it in surprise before exchanging uncertain glances with one another. Who could that be? 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂

Evan gestured for Leni to go and answer it, and she rose with a frown and pulled the door open, only to be shoved unceremoniously to the side as bulky Silver Pack warriors filed in one after another. Their large, imposing frames filled the doorways and consumed the space in the room. They were all dressed in black with red badges on their breast pockets, and right in the center of them stood Beta Matt.

When Evan saw the warriors he was momentarily confused, but at the sight of the Silver Pack’s head Beta, his expression softened into a smile. He straightened his shirt and stepped forward.

"I see you have finally come to your senses, Beta Matt, coming to my room to see me personally. We haven’t had the chance to speak one on one yet, but I am glad you are here, though I don’t quite understand why you needed to bring the guards with you." He said, his eyes sweeping briefly over the four warriors positioned around the room before settling back on Matt with a look of mild curiosity.

Matt didn’t even blink at Evan’s words. The corner of his lip pulled up ever so slightly, because he couldn’t help but find it remarkable that alongside being foolish, the Alpha of Moonwillow also appeared to lack any instinct for danger, and still genuinely seemed to believe that Matt had come all the way to his room for a friendly introduction. Just how delusional could one man be?

Matt didn’t bother to correct him. He simply signaled to the warriors, and in no time two of them stepped forward and took up positions on either side of Evan.

"Alpha Evan, you are hereby under Silver Pack arrest for raising your hand against the future supreme Luna of the Silver Pack. Striking someone of that position constitutes the third most serious crime recognized by our pack and is punishable by two months of imprisonment and corporal punishment. If you wish to be treated with dignity by our men, you will walk with them quietly, otherwise you will be handled as any other criminal." Matt stated in a cold, measured tone, as though reciting a formal decree, and every eye in the room went wide.

Evan blinked, visibly stunned, not knowing whether to laugh or to demand for more explanation. "Wait, I think you have all of this completely mixed—"

He didn’t finish his sentence before a hard blow connected with his face, sending him off his feet. When he looked up from the floor, blood already filling his mouth, he found himself staring up at the warrior who had delivered it.

"You do not have the right to speak. For every word that leaves your mouth, one of your limbs will be broken." With that, two of the warriors hauled him up from the floor and began dragging him out of the room.

At first Leni was too shocked and stunned to move, but when she saw them dragging her mate toward the door, she scrambled forward with no clear idea of what she intended to do, only to be stopped dead in her tracks by a single dark look from Matt.

"Wh—what is the meaning of this? We are among the important guests of your pack, you cannot treat my mate this way," she said, fighting to hold her composure in front of the supreme Alpha’s Beta, who regarded her with cold and completely indifferent eyes.
