Chapter 1989: Trump Cards

The Severed Heavens Demon Sovereign’s avatar of will went to its destruction and still couldn’t defeat Su Yi!

The other Master Gods’ hearts sank.

Boom!

The battle raged on. He didn’t even pause after cutting down the Severed Heavens Demon Sovereign.

Sword qi flashed through the air like charging bulls, imbued with the flowing power of reincarnation. It ground the sky away, plunging the entire stretch of heaven and earth into the endless darkness of Samsara.

This taboo power combined with Su Yi’s unbelievable attainments in the Dao of the Sword presented an enormous threat to the Master Gods.

Within moments, three Master Gods’ avatars of will collapsed and withered. One roared in bitterness, one hissed with resentment, and one let out a deep, melancholy sigh.

With that, the situation on the battlefield turned on its head once more.

“With that Dao Sword, none of us are any match for him! Everyone, if you have any cards left, hurry up and reveal them. Otherwise, we’ll truly be finished!” the Angler said frantically. He wasn’t willing to just give up.

They’d plotted for countless years, expending an untold amount of effort, all for the sake of this unprecedented chance. Who could possibly accept their efforts ending in abject failure?

It wasn’t just the Angler. The other Master Gods weren’t willing to accept this, either.

They hadn’t put all that work in simply to snuff out the Heretic Reincarnator. There were opportunities at divinity up for grabs in the Epoch Battlefield, including supreme Epoch Fragments. The Master Gods were intent on acquiring them.

But now, the situation had turned on its head. If they didn’t defeat Su Yi soon, all of their effort would go to waste!

Boom!

A storm of sword qi whooshed forth, tearing yet another Master God apart. His screams shook the heavens.

“Hurry!” the Angler said frantically.

Su Yi’s momentum seemed unstoppable. Even old-timers like the Angler wouldn’t be able to fight back much longer.

Wenren Qin suddenly flashed through the air, the divine flames around her manifesting a Vermillion Bird. It carried her through the skies, safely away from the battle.

Clang!

The Sword of Proximity let out a clear hum, then flashed through the air.

A streak of sword qi descended from the distant dome of heaven, then descended, bringing with it the inscrutable, unsurpassed sword force of the Sword of the Nine Hells.

Bang!

The Vermillion Bird split, then scattered into a rain of firelight.

Wenren Qin let out a desperate shriek. “Heretic! I’ll return to scatter your ashes to the wind!”

Before her voice had even finished echoing through the air, her avatar of will disintegrated.

This was the wondrousness of the Sword of Proximity. Wherever it pointed, the ends of the earth were close at hand. No matter how far you fled, it was useless!

This scene startled the other Master Gods who'd been planning to flee. They immediately gave up on the idea. No matter how unwilling they were, their only choice was to fight to the bitter end!

“Ol’ Dipankara, even after all this, you still aren’t going to take action? What, do you want to see us all destroyed first so that you can monopolize the spoils?” the Angler suddenly roared, seemingly throwing all caution to the wind. His eyes bulged as he glared at the Dipankara Buddha. “Don’t think I don’t know about the secret talisman that person gave you.”

“That” person?

It was a highly ambiguous descriptor, yet the Master Gods instantly understood. Without exception, their expressions darkened, and they too glowered at the Dipankara Buddha.

“So, you were hiding something like that all along, Dipankara?” roared the Rahu Yao Ancestor.

“We won’t let you hold back any longer!” seethed Master God Yun He.

The Dipankara Buddha’s expression shifted erratically. In the end, he sighed, and was just about to say something when a streak of sword qi descended from the heavens. Two more Master Gods’ avatars broke, destroyed on the spot.

Now, only the Dipankara Buddha, Rahu Yao Ancestor, Master God Tian Huang, the Angler, and Master God Yun He remained. Moreover, all five of their avatars were damaged.

They were now at a complete disadvantage and in dire peril!

“Enough!” A moment later, the Dipankara Buddha seemed to reach a decision. He held his hands in front of him, and a perfectly round jade pendant floated into the air.

The pendant released a dazzling rain of crimson light, and a terrifying, taboo power swept outward. Heaven and earth trembled, and the sky abruptly collapsed on all sides. The entire Epoch Battlefield trembled so violently that it seemed it might split.

The Immortal Dao source power of the Chaos Dao Cave rapidly shrank in on itself!

“What is this?” The distant onlookers’ hair stood on end. All of them sensed an indescribable pressure, as if a massive mountain were weighing down on their hearts and souls. It was difficult to even breathe.

“That’s the power of that person!!” said the Angler, his eyes flashing with excitement.

Master God Tian Huang and the others were inwardly vexed. They finally realized that the Angler was right; the Dipankara Buddha really had been holding back on them.

His goal was almost certainly to wait until all of their avatars had been wiped out, then kill Su Yi by himself. That way, he could monopolize all of the available good fortune!

Su Yi sensed the terrifying power emanating from that jade pendant too. The Sword of the Nine Hells quivered within his sea of consciousness, as if it had sensed a true threat.

Don’t tell me that the power within that pendant can break the restrictions of the Epoch Battlefield and display power far beyond that of a Lesser God?

Su Yi’s thoughts raced, and he attacked without hesitation, slashing at the jade pendant.

Boom!!

Sword qi manifested an endless abyss of reincarnation. Furthermore, it was imbued with a portion of the Sword of the Nine Hells’ terrifying sword force. Its power was so immense that the Angler and the other Master Gods had no choice but to move further away.

Only the Dipankara Buddha remained in place. He stood there with the countenance of a temple statue, chanting inscrutable Sanskrit sutras.

When Su Yi’s attack landed on the jade pendant, a bright red auspicious cloud surged forth. It rose into the heavens, blocking the sword’s descent.

At the same time, a dignified voice with a distinctive magnetic quality rang out. “And what should I call you? Li Fuyou? Or perhaps Yi Daoxuan?”

That voice boomed like a morning bell or evening drum, resounding throughout heaven and earth.

Then, a figure emerged from the jade pendant. It was a man with waist-length hair. He wore pristine white, long, wide-sleeved robes. He had distinctive features and an intense, deep gaze.

When he appeared, heaven and earth abruptly darkened, as if suddenly plunged into an eternal night.

Countless wisps of dark power reminiscent of chains condensed, then manifested strange, dark talisman markings around the man in long robes.

Even just standing there, it somehow seemed as if he stood amidst endless, impossibly far away darkness. He seemed tall, grand, holy, and utterly unreachable!

Boom!

Heaven and earth were thrown into upheaval, The darkness spread out in waves.

The distant onlookers, no matter their cultivations, instantly lost all awareness. It was as if their bodies and souls had been plunged into an endless, dark void.

They could no longer see, hear, or sense that existence!

The Dipankara Buddha, Rahu Yao Ancestor, Angler, Divine Master Tian Huang, and Divine Master Yun He tensed, then solemnly clasped their fists in greeting.

“Greetings, Fellow Daoist!”

This powerful existence didn’t like being addressed as senior. He believed that once acquainted, everyone was a fellow Daoist with no distinction of rank or seniority. Thus, he preferred that others addressed him as “Fellow Daoist.”

“I don’t have much time here, so I’ll skip the pleasantries,” laughed the man in long robes.

Then, he turned his gaze on Su Yi. His eyes were as clear as a river, as pure as those of an infant.

But beneath his gaze, Su Yi felt as if all of his secrets had been laid bare. It was an extraordinarily unpleasant sensation, and he couldn’t help but frown.

“Who are you?” asked Su Yi.

The long-robed man’s every movement and gesture shifted heaven and earth. As he stood amidst the endless cover of darkness, his aura was tranquil, yet as vast and boundless as the ocean. When it burst forth, it was highly likely to send a wave of destruction sweeping across the entire world!

“You don’t even recognize me?” The man’s gaze shifted inscrutably. “It seems you’ve yet to recover your memories.”

Su Yi suddenly recalled the time he investigated the mysteries of the lost Mount Taiwu. At the time, he encountered the Divine Fortune Teller and the Zhuyou Great Peng. The Zhuyou Great Peng then used its Zhuyou Torch Eyes.

In the resulting vision, it saw the gods take Mount Taiwu away. Their ranks included Wenren Qin, Master God Yun He, and the Dipankara Buddha, among others.

However, the Zhuyou Great Peng also mentioned one figure more terrifying than all the others, a man shrouded in endless darkness. The bird couldn’t see his features, but he was surrounded by a ring manifested of the Laws, as if the natural order of the heavens themselves were defending him.

At the time, the man standing in the darkness said, “You really aren’t dead!”

The bird’s vision made a deep impression on Su Yi. He knew full well that the mysterious man shrouded in darkness was referring to him.

The Dipankara Buddha, Master God Yun He, and the others’ avatars of will all stood before him. Now, an even more mysterious, terrifying man in long robes stood there, shrouded in darkness and surrounded by dark markings seemingly condensed out of the Laws of the natural order.

Su Yi instantly concluded that this was the very mysterious figure the Zhuyou Great Peng had seen in its vision.

As these thoughts raced through Su Yi’s head, he said, “Were you the one who took Mount Taiwu?”

The man in long robes was briefly stunned, but then, he nodded. “That’s right. From Mount Taiwu, I gleaned insight into your life as Wang Ye, and I concluded that you hadn’t perished in the Immortal Realm’s Battle of Eternal Night after all. You’d simply re-entered the cycle of reincarnation.”

He then swept his gaze across the area. “I just wouldn’t have expected that even after countless years of planning, our arrangements weren’t enough to capture you.”

His tone was rueful. “Fortunately, I always leave something in reserve in case something unexpected happens, as it has now.”

The man in long robes smiled. “With me here, unless you control a power that involves the River of Destiny, you cannot possibly escape.”

He spoke with absolute conviction. The Master Gods were instantly reassured; they knew that the man in long robes was not one to boast. For him to say such a thing meant that Su Yi’s defeat was inevitable!

All of them looked coldly at Su Yi.

Seth's Thoughts

This chapter references events from chapter 1624, in which the Zhuyou Great Peng investigated the site of Mount Taiwu's disappearance:

The Zhuyou Great Peng shuddered from head to toe. “Most terrifying of all was the figure standing in the darkness. I couldn’t see his features clearly, but the countless talisman markings around him manifested a divine ring out of the power of the Laws behind him.”

(...)

“He was far too terrifying!” said the Zhuyou Great Peng. “I barely even glanced at the figure hiding in the darkness, but I felt a rending pain in my soul, as if it were being ripped apart. Just as I was on the verge of breaking, the man in the shadows said, ‘Just as I thought. You really aren’t dead!’”
