To my avid readers, thanks for all your support and encouragement. Your insightful comments, your votes and your gifts keep me writing.

I would like to crave your indulgence before you read this chapter and a few others going forward.

The male lead is a temperamental young man going through a series of emotions based on loss, betrayal and heartbreak. His irrational behaviour, though questionable, is his weakness.

But like crude gold going through different stages of purification, the male lead will overcome his weakness and learn his lesson eventually.

Please, do not completely write him off. Give him a chance at redemption. He will make you smile in the end.

Thanks.

"I'll wait for your call, s..." Henry was saying as he picked up his suitcase and cowboy hat, in readiness to leave when he suddenly froze.

"What's wrong?"

Senator Gregory followed Henry's frozen gaze to the hallway entrance, his heart skipping a beat at the sight of his son-in-law.

"Oh no. He is already here."

"I think he might get the wrong idea." Henry whispered.

"I think so too. Quickly go through the back door while I try to sort things out with him." Senator Gregory gestured to the door behind them, shoving Henry on the shoulder.

"No." Henry shook his head while dropping his briefcase and hat by the corner. "I don't think running away right now is a good idea, senator. It will paint a negative picture making me look guilty of a crime I didn't commit."

"That's true. So what do you suggest we do?" Senator Gregory asked, staring at Blaze who was slowly advancing towards them like a prowling hungry jaguar preparing for the kill.

"Stay back and let me face his fury," Henry replied while moving forward.

"I'm right behind you."

"No, senator." Henry put his hand backwards, stopping the senator. "Please stay back. My friend has a bad temper and I don't want you getting hurt in the process. We are young and our bodies can take any hassle but not you. Let me handle this alone."

"Are you sure?" The senator hesitated.

"I'm positive." Henry gave him a reassuring thumbs up.

"Okay." Senator Gregory quickly dialled the number of his security aides while Henry moved forward to confront his friend.

Upfront, Blaze was breathless with anger and blinded with jealousy. All he saw was the duo conspiring against him, feeling his heart with betrayal and a thirst for revenge.

Every sense of rationality in him evaporated into thin and was replaced with a venomous thought to maim and destroy.

"Welcome, Mr Anderson! The madam is in here." Pascal said in an attempt to distract his boss. But his greeting fell on deaf ears as Blaze barely acknowledged him or his comment about Amelia.

Some nurses and patients, who were loitering the hallway stopped on their track, their eyes brimming with anticipation of a possible showdown.

When both men were only five metres apart, Henry tried to reason with his friend.

"Bro, I know how you feel right now. And I know how awkward this situation looks. But you have got to trust me, man. I will never do anything to betray you. I swear."

"Trust you?!" Blaze growled in a semi-repressed tone, charging forward like an unleashed beast. "I trusted you, bastard."

Blaze grabbed Henry by the collar of his shirt, almost choking the life out of him.

"Is this how you pay me back for my loyalty?"

"I didn't do anything," Henry said in a strained voice as he struggled to free his collar from Blaze's asphyxiating grip.

"Do I look like a fool to you?"

Blaze roared as he reared back his arm and struck Henry fiercely in the face, sending the latter falling backwards with a broken jaw and bleeding nose.

"Ah!" Wild gasps escaped the opened mouths of all those standing and watching in horror.

"Do you think, I wouldn't find out?" Blaze pounced on Henry before the latter could pick himself off the floor and gave him two more devastating punches in the face.

"Someone do something. He's going to kill that young man." A mature lady patient cried out in terror, at the way the other man was receiving the beating of his life without fighting back.

Pascal stood like an electric pole, his eyes twitching and his hand itching to go and help out. But he knew the repercussions of interfering.

However, Senator Gregory who had initially given Henry his word, couldn't stand by anymore and watch Blaze beat the crap out of his innocent friend.

"I trusted you with my wife and this is what you do to me?" Blaze raised his hand a fourth time to strike Henry in the face when someone caught his arm in mid-air.

"That is enough, Blaze. Stop this foolishness and get a grip on yourself. You are behaving like a child. Your friend hasn't done anything wrong."

"Get your filthy hands off me." Blaze roughly freed his hand from the senator's grip, the force of the pull, making the senator lose his bearing.

"Ah!" Another wild gasp escaped everyone standing by as the mature man fell on his butt with a sickening thud and a piercing cry.

Instantly, the scale of vengeance blinding Blaze fell from his eyes as he briskly got off Henry to help his father-in-law.

At that very moment, the senator's aide and some alerted security men came running through the hallway with some doctors.

Though bleeding through his nose, his mouth, his broken lips and his bruised temple, Henry quickly picked himself off the floor to help the senator stand up, while wincing in pain.

"Senator, who did this to you?" The senator's head of security demanded while trying to help Blaze and Henry lift him off the floor.

"Ah! Stop! Put me down." The senator screamed in agony, gnashing his teeth as pain shot up to his brain like a knife twisting in his side when he tried to stand.

"Stop it, all of you. You are making it worse. Can't you see his hip joint is dislocated?" One of the doctors, who quickly arrived at the scene said in a reprimanding tone while signaling them to slowly put him down.

"Get the stretcher." Another doctor signalled two nurses who nodded and ran off to carry out his instruction.

The commotion in the hallway attracted some other patients who were inside their room including Eugene.

"Big Brother, uncle, Henry, what happened here?" Eugene demanded in an alarmed voice, his widened eyes almost bulging out of the socket, at the sight of Henry's bloodied face and Amelia's father on the floor groaning in pain.

But no one answered him as they were too busy concentrating on the senator who was screeching in great agony as the team of doctors carefully transferred him from the floor to the stretcher.

"Sir, you are in a pretty bad shape. We need to stop that bleeding before it gets worse. Please follow me." One of the doctors stopped Henry from following them, as they rolled the senator out of the hallway to the emergency ward.

Henry simply nodded before turning to Blaze, who had suddenly gone quiet as though someone had turned a bucket of cold water on his head.

"Bro, you disappoint me. You should know I would never betray you. Pray nothing happens to Amelia's father otherwise, she will never forgive you."
