Chapter 123 - 123. Catching up

"Henry?" I stopped sprinting and walked to his side.

As if unable to hear me, he continued to munch on the eyeball, before twirling the brain matter-string around his wrist like a bracelet. I had the bad premonition that he would eat that as well if not stopped.

I mean, yeah, it probably would make him stronger, but besides it being disgusting as hell, and eating things raw isn't good, do we really want to empower a body that is possessed by a shadow?

Likewise, I stood before him and waved my hand before his eyes; again, no reaction. Snipping fingers didn't help as well.

"Let that go." When I heard the nauseating sound of him taking another bite, I had it with him.

Grabbing his arm, I took the rest of the eye and bracelet away from him and threw that stuff on the ground, while he stood there in a daze, letting me do whatever. At least he didn't turn aggressive again.

"We are going back; come on."

Seeing him not reacting, I tightened my grip and pulled him back to my grandma and the Devins. He let me lead him; very good. Better than carrying him.

However, seeing him now in the previously described daze and the fact that he looked as if he had recovered from the fever, meant the shadow had really taken over. We had to hurry.

When we came to them, Henrietta and her mother took a little step back, seeing Henry's state, while his father came to him. He felt his forehead.

"Yes, this is the normal state... He should have lost the fight." He murmured while wiping his face.

"So what if he did? We'll just need to get him back anyway." I said.

Henrietta just stared at her brother, in disinterest. That bitch.

My grandma also looked at Henry, but more as if she were ready to beat him anytime.

I grinned at her, and she harrumphed at me, motioning with her walking stick in the direction we needed to take.

"Don't dawdle. Let's go."

"Yes, ma'am." I pulled Henry, and my grandma walked beside me, behind us the Devins.

When we finally exited the forest, there was daylight welcoming us. It doesn't matter to me, but I have no idea if the Devins had a night-vision upgrade; they were moving really smoothly, though.

Well, if they had eaten from the monsters until the shadows appeared and Henrietta took things out from mini-portals, they could have graded up already. In these two weeks, Henry was inside the forest before my arrival; he had also eaten from the monsters, so his speed and strength increase could also be explained due to this.

Only, I don't know why he was able to see in the dark since first entering a portal. He naturally consumed nothing in the short time we were in the little-city world.

And my eye color had started changing the moment I looked unknowingly into the future of Henrietta, with the help of Henrietta2's corpse in the morgue. After I had died, they became redder altogether.

Additionally strange, was that instead of seeing her future, I had just died. If it had been Henrietta2's future, it would make sense, cause she was already dead, but I revealed the black coin on the back of my hand inside the morgue. It was Henrietta2's counterpart future, which was Henrietta.

If you ask me, that wasn't a good sign. That girl only brings death to everyone.

Anyway, after we walked down the hill like this and arrived inside the crater, I motioned at the backdoor, through which we had entered the crater city each time. Henry let himself steer obediently, and upon entering the askew house, Chelsea welcomed us.

"Is everyone alright?" She asked while observing Henry. Nobody had noticed that we both were full of pee because the monster blood on Henry was more prominent, and we all smelled anyway from not showering.

"Yes, how about your group? Is Jeyjey still with you?" I asked while crossing the room for the couch Jeyjey had used the last time, and surprisingly, I found her on it again, with Baggy Jeans on her side.

"Oh, good." With my question answered, I ushered Baggy Jeans away, and sat Henry at the other end of the couch, away from Jeyjey.

"The others are upstairs." Baggy Jeans explained.

"Good." I nodded and sat beside Henry, in the middle, to take a well-deserved break.

"Nobody was left behind." Chelsea emphasized, and I chuckled. She had just made it more awkward by mentioning it. Apparently, Chelsea herself noticed and burrowed her face inside her hands.

"Good work everyone." I said, and leaned back, closing my eyes, but still holding Henry's wrist, should he suddenly run berserk again. I felt him imitating me, and also leaning back.

My grandmother beat my leg with her stick and searched for a chair for herself.

"Yeah, sorry, too tired."...to care where an ancient mummy places herself.

"What is the next step? Where are we going?" Baggy Jeans asked.

"Next we go to my grandma's mansion; we will leave in half an hour." We all needed a permanent place to stay.

"Go tell the guys that there are a few corpses that they need to bring out of the building when we arrive, then everyone gets enough food and water, and we all can take a good rest."

If the roots were really responsible for eating away the corpses inside the crater, they did not do so in the mansion, for whatever reason.

"Everyone who isn't able to climb the debris can use the ladder." I said.

Now that we are stuck inside this world, they would soon see my ability anyway, so keeping quiet would only inconvenience me, and I won't make it harder for myself than necessary.

"We have a ladder?" Baggy Jeans asked, and I gave him a look.

"Yes. Interdimensional bag, you know, like in the comics? I have one." Well, it's similar.

"Stop kidding." He chuckled, while Jeyjey didn't react, and Chelsea grew astonished.

"Nope." I raised my head, putting my hand into my jacket and pulling a burning cigarette out in the next second.

"....?" He watched speechlessly while I took a deep drag.

"DON'T SMOKE WHEN AN INJURED GIRL SITS BESIDE YOU! DO YOU HAVE NO MANNERS?" My grandmother came with a chair from wherever and made us all better by screaming around.

"Yes, yes." I said, stood up, and walked to the open window to sit on the windowsill.

"How is that possible?" Baggy Jeans, asked, and I provided clarification.

"The military sent prisoners down to come save you because we are replaceable, and they were too scared to come down themselves. We got equipment from them, which is the interdimensional bag that is bound to my soul and only listens to me, even if I die. We came to bring you out of this world." I sucked on my cigarette, feeling extra creative given all the bullshit I spouted.

"However, the black-haired, blue-eyed girl had intercepted and let shadows from another world enter this one, so with the authority that the military had given me, I decided that we have to close the portal for the moment as to not let the shadows cross into our world. For which, we, by the way, would all get in front of military court, where we would surely be sentenced to death." I still had to make sure that everyone knew that it was Henrietta's fault and that I had no choice.

The Devin family were inside the living room as well, by the backdoor, and Henrietta's mother had taken a half-full water bottle and a tissue from somewhere, trying to wipe the blood off her daughter's face.

"Is this really necessary? Badmouthing her in front of us?" Her father stood up and walked to us.

I took another drag, and after seeing that Henry was still behaving with his eyes closed, I looked outside the window.

"Yes. I am just a brat myself, and I am fucking resentful after suffering fifteen stab wounds."

"That's a plain lie. You are still fit enough to run around and smoke." The middle-aged man pointed at me.

"I heal really fast. Ask your daughter if you won't believe me. The fact that I hadn't killed her, and am even accommodating her, is only thanks to the fucking goodness of my heart." And so that I can throw her at the military when we have finally left this place.

I took my last long drag from the cigarette that would disappear soon and motioned for Baggy Jeans to go upstairs and tell the others about our soon departure and the help we required to make it cozy in the upside-down mansion buried in the ground.

"Her hands...she will never be able to hold something again." Sobs came from the other side, where Henrietta's mother had more or less cleaned up her daughter's face and was now looking at her hands.

"Damn right!" I scoffed.

"Good!" My grandmother simultaneously spoke.
