Chapter 72: Rising Stars Draw Level

The twenty-eighth minute...

Hastings were still pressing forward, looking to double their lead before halftime.

Connor Davis collected the ball in the center circle while observing his surroundings. Harvey Quinlan was already moving toward him.

[> "Davis with the ball," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "Hastings want to kill this game off." <]

The playmaker looked up and saw Marcus Price making a run into the 18-yard box, and he immediately released a long pass. The pass was weighted perfectly.

Marcus controlled it with his back to the goal. Jack Stones was tight behind him.

[> "Marcus Price in the 18-yard box again," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "He’s been a constant threat to Northcastle Rising Stars since the starting whistle." <]

The striker tried to turn, but Jack held his ground. The captain stayed strong, finding ways to maneuver his way through.

Marcus spotted an opportunity and quickly played the ball back to Ben Williams. The midfielder was twenty yards out.

Williams struck it first time without hesitation. The shot was rising, heading for the top corner.

Will van Drunen threw himself in front of it. The ball deflected off his shoulder.

[> "BLOCKED!" <] Michael Harrison shouted. [> "Van Drunen with the sacrifice to deny Ben Williams a goal attempt!" <]

The ball bounced loose. Connor Davis pounced on it, but his shot was charged down by Harvey Quinlan.

[> "End-to-end stuff," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "Both teams giving everything." <]

The ball rolled to Émile Fournier. The French midfielder controlled it calmly, whilst looking for an opening.

[> "Rising Stars with possession," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "They need to make it count." <]

Fournier looked up and saw Ishaan Bhatt calling for the ball, and he responded without hesitation. The pass was perfect.

Ishaan controlled it with his back to the goal. Jake Thompson was pressing from behind, intending to bar his path forward or give him enough time to find his teammates.

[> "Bhatt under pressure," <] Peter Walsh said. [> "He needs to be quick." <]

The number ten spun away from Thompson, leaving him flat-footed. The skillful move drew surprise gasps from the stands.

Thompson’s face turned red in embarrassment, but he quickly collected himself, scrambled up, and pursued the fleeing playmaker.

Now, Bhatt was facing forward.

Space opened up ahead of him. Ishaan drove forward, carrying the ball.

[> "Bhatt advancing," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "He’s got that vision to unlock defenses." <]

[> Two Hastings players closed in on him—Connor Davis from the right, Ben Williams from the left.

Ishaan saw them coming, and instinctively, he quickly surveyed his options to create a goal-scoring opportunity. He took a quick touch to his right, then a pass to Ethan Suleiman, who had wriggled free from his marker.

[> "Suleiman with the ball," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "He’s got pace to burn." <]

The winger took it in his stride. Ryan Clarke was already moving across to challenge.

Suleiman waited for the defender to commit. Then he cut inside, away from the touchline, earning another surprise gasp from the stands.

[> "Suleiman cuts inside, sending Ryan Clarke on an errand." Michael Harrison said. [> "He’s looking for a chance to shoot." <]

Alex Morgan came across to help. Two defenders are now facing the winger.

Suleiman looked up and saw Luis Navarro making a run into the 18-yard box. He quickly sent a lobbed through-pass over the Hastings Coastal defensive line. The through-pass was inch-perfect.

[> "LUIS NAVARRO IN THE 18-YARD BOX!" <] Peter Walsh shouted in anticipation.

The Spanish striker was already moving, beating the offside line in tandem. Tom Bradley was trying to keep up with his pace.

Luis controlled the ball with his first touch. The goal was fifteen yards away.

[> "Navarro with a chance," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "He needs to make this count." <]

The striker looked up. James Mitchell was off his line, trying to narrow the angle.

Luis feinted to shoot. Bradley committed to the block, stretching out a foot while sliding.

At the last second, the striker rolled the ball to his left. Bradley, who was already diving, could only look on helplessly as his target dribbled past him.

[> "BRADLEY’S BEATEN!" <] Peter Walsh screamed.

Luis was through on goal. Just him and the keeper.

He didn’t think twice, didn’t even waste his time looking at the goal and assessing the best spot to place the ball. He let loose a wicked shot.

The shot was low and hard. Aimed at whichever bottom corner? He didn’t know... And definitely didn’t care to know.

James Mitchell dove to his right. His fingertips barely touched the ball, but not enough to impede its movement.

The ball found the corner of the net in rugged fashion. The away end erupted in jubilation and sighs of relief.

[> "GOOOOOOOOOAL!" <] Michael Harrison screamed. [> "NAVARRO EQUALIZES!" <]

The Spanish striker was already running toward the corner flag. His teammates chased after him.

[> "What a silky finish!" <] Peter Walsh shouted. [> "Navarro picks his spot perfectly!" <]

The away section was going wild with joy. Two hundred plus voices singing as one.

Luis slid on his knees in front of the traveling fans. The noise was deafening.

[> "Thirty-one minutes played," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "Rising Stars are level! Well and truly back in this game. It’s not over yet!" <]

The home crowd was stunned. Their team had been in control, but now it was 1-1.

Jack Stones was pumping his fist in the air. The captain was delighted.

[> "That’s the character we wanted to see," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "Northcastle Rising Stars showing real fight." <]

On the touchline, Maddox was celebrating with his coaching staff. The equalizer was crucial.

"Yes!" he shouted, punching the air. "Keep going, lads!"

The replay on the big screen showed the goal in slow motion. Suleiman’s clever pass, Luis’s dribble past his marker, and of course, the composed finish.

[> "Brilliant team goal," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "That’s what Northcastle Rising Stars are capable of." <]

The celebration continued for another minute. The players were pumped up.

[> "Game on now," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "Both teams level at 1-1." <]

The restart was delayed as both teams reorganized. The atmosphere was electric.

[> "This is what youth league football at the top level is all about," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "End-to-end action." <]

As the players prepared for the restart, the match statistics flashed up on the big screen.
