Football System: Touchline God-Chapter 79: A Surreal Scenario
The clock showed fifty-eight minutes. Rising Stars were slowly finding their feet.
Harvey Quinlan won the ball in midfield. The tackle was clean and strong.
[> "Quinlan with the interception," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "Rising Stars need to capitalize." <]
The ball was played left to Declan Whittaker. The winger was already running at tired legs.
Dylan Foster was backing off. The right-back looked nervous.
[> "Whittaker with space," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "Foster doesn’t want to dive in." <]
The winger drove forward. His first touch was perfect.
Marcus Price was tracking back, but he wasn’t close enough. Whittaker had room to work.
[> "This is against the run of play," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "Rising Stars breaking forward." <]
Whittaker looked up. Luis Navarro was making a run into the box.
But the angle wasn’t right for a cross. The winger kept driving forward.
[> "Whittaker cutting inside," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "He’s got a sweet left foot." <]
Twenty-five yards out, Whittaker shifted the ball to his left foot. Time seemed to slow down.
Tom Bradley was rushing out to close him down. The captain was desperate to block.
But Whittaker had already made his mind up. The shot was coming.
[> "WHITTAKER!" <] Michael Harrison screamed.
The ball left his foot like a rocket. Curling toward the top corner.
James Mitchell was already diving. The keeper’s fingertips were stretched.
But the ball was dipping and swerving. Perfect technique from the winger.
It smashed against the inside of the post. The crowd gasped.
[> "OFF THE POST!" <] Peter Walsh yelled. [> "What a strike!" <]
The ball bounced back into the penalty area. Players were scrambling.
Luis Navarro was the quickest to react. The striker was already moving.
[> "NAVARRO!" <] Michael Harrison shouted.
Six yards out, with an empty net. The Spanish striker couldn’t miss.
His foot connected with the ball. It rolled toward the goal line.
The home crowd held its breath. This looked like the equalizer.
But the linesman’s flag was already up. The assistant referee was certain.
[> "FLAG’S UP!" <] Peter Walsh screamed. [> "Offside!" <]
The goal was disallowed. Luis Navarro couldn’t believe it.
"I was onside!" he protested to the linesman. "I was level!"
The Rising Stars players surrounded the official. They were furious.
[> "Controversial decision," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "That looked very close." <]
Jack Stones was arguing with the referee. "Check with your linesman! That’s never offside!"
But the official was pointing for a free kick. His decision was final.
[> "Rising Stars feel robbed again," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "Another tight call goes against them." <]
The away fans were going wild. Boos echoed around the stadium.
"CHEAT! CHEAT! CHEAT!" they chanted at the linesman.
On the touchline, Maddox was furious. He was screaming at the fourth official.
"That’s never offside!" he yelled. "Your linesman needs glasses!"
The assistant coach was trying to calm him down. Maddox was close to another booking.
[> "Maddox needs to be careful," <] Michael Harrison warned. [> "He’s already been cautioned." <]
James Mitchell took the free kick quickly. The ball was rolled out to Tom Bradley.
[> "Hastings looking to restart," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "They’ve dodged a bullet there." <]
But Rising Stars weren’t done. Their tails were up now.
Émile Fournier intercepted Bradley’s pass. The French midfielder was in space.
[> "Fournier wins it back," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "Rising Stars pressing high." <]
The midfielder looked up. His teammates were making runs.
But there was no clear pass. Hastings had reorganized quickly.
[> "No options forward," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "Fournier will have to try something different." <]
The French midfielder was thirty yards from goal. Way out of normal shooting range.
But something told him to have a go. The keeper was off his line slightly.
[> "Fournier shaping to shoot," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "That’s ambitious from there." <]
Jake Thompson was rushing out to close him down. The defender was too late.
Fournier struck it with his right foot. The technique was perfect.
The ball flew through the air like a cannonball. Rising toward the top corner.
[> "FOURNIER!" <] Peter Walsh screamed. [> "From thirty yards!" <]
James Mitchell was backpedaling frantically. The keeper could see it was heading for the corner.
He threw himself backward. His fingertips were stretched to the limit.
But the ball was dipping and swerving. It looked unstoppable.
The crowd was on its feet. Home and away fans watching in amazement.
[> "This is heading for the top corner!" <] Michael Harrison yelled.
The ball smashed against the edge of the goalpost. Right where the post met the crossbar.
The impact was incredible. The sound echoed around the stadium.
Then something strange happened. Something nobody had ever seen before.
POOF!
The ball burst. Like a balloon at a birthday party.
[> "THE BALL’S BURST!" <] Peter Walsh screamed. [> "I’ve never seen that before!" <]
The deflated leather dropped to the ground. Players stopped and stared.
Even the referee looked confused. He’d never seen anything like it.
[> "The ball has completely burst!" <] Michael Harrison said. [> "That’s extraordinary!" <]
The crowd didn’t know whether to laugh or applaud. It was surreal.
Émile Fournier had his hands on his head. He couldn’t believe his luck.
"Are you joking?" he said to himself. "Are you actually joking?"
Players from both teams were looking at the deflated ball. Some were smiling despite themselves.
[> "In thirty years of commentary," <] Peter Walsh noted, [> "I have never seen a ball burst like that." <]
The referee was talking to his assistants. They needed a new ball.
A steward ran onto the pitch with a fresh one. The game would continue.
[> "What are the odds of that happening?" <] Michael Harrison asked. [> "Million to one?" <]
The Rising Stars players were devastated. In two minutes, they’d been denied twice.
First the offside flag. Now a burst ball.
[> "Rising Stars will feel cursed," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "Nothing is going their way." <]
Luis Navarro walked over to Fournier. The striker put his arm around his teammate.
"Keep going," he said. "Our time will come."
Fournier nodded, but his face said everything. He was gutted.
[> "That would have been goal of the season," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "What a strike it was." <]
The new ball was placed where the burst one had landed. The referee was ready to restart.
[> "Corner kick to Rising Stars," <] Peter Walsh said. [> "At least they get something from it." <]
The away fans found their voice again. They started singing for their team.
"Come on, you Stars! Don’t give up now!"
Fournier walked to the corner flag. His head was still shaking.
The French midfielder placed the new ball down. He was trying to refocus.
[> "Can Rising Stars finally get their breakthrough?" <] Michael Harrison asked. [> "They’re certainly trying everything." <]
The corner kick was whipped in toward the near post. Will van Drunen was rising.
The Dutch defender’s header was powerful. Aimed at the bottom corner.
But James Mitchell was there. The keeper saved it low to his left.
[> "Mitchell saves!" <] Peter Walsh yelled. [> "Another crucial stop!" <]
The rebound fell to Ishaan Bhatt. The number ten struck it first time.
Tom Bradley threw himself in front of it. The captain blocked it with his body.
[> "Blocked again!" <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "Hastings defending desperately!" <]
The ball bounced loose to Harvey Quinlan. The midfielder was eight yards out.
His shot was rising toward the roof of the net. Surely this was the equalizer.
But somehow, James Mitchell got a hand to it. The ball deflected over the bar.
[> "HOW HAS MITCHELL SAVED THAT?" <] Peter Walsh screamed. [> "Incredible goalkeeping!" <]
The home crowd was stunned. Their keeper was performing miracles.
[> "Mitchell is having a worldie," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "He’s keeping Hastings ahead single-handedly." <]
Another corner to Rising Stars. The pressure was relentless now.
[> "This is wave after wave," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "Hastings are hanging on." <]
Fournier took this corner too. The ball was aimed at the back post.
Jack Stones rose highest. The captain’s header was goalward.
Mitchell was beaten this time. The ball was heading for the net.
But Alex Morgan was on the line. The defender cleared it with his head.
[> "OFF THE LINE!" <] Michael Harrison yelled. [> "Morgan to the rescue!" <]
The ball dropped to Luis Navarro. The striker was six yards out.
He swiveled and shot in one movement. The technique was perfect.
But Dylan Foster slid in with a desperate block. The ball hit his shin and went wide.
[> "BLOCKED!" <] Peter Walsh screamed. [> "Foster with a crucial intervention!" <]
The Rising Stars players couldn’t believe it. Nothing was going in.
[> "Rising Stars are throwing everything at Hastings," <] Michael Harrison observed. [> "But the home side are holding firm." <]
The clock showed sixty-two minutes. The pressure had been intense.
[> "Surely Rising Stars will score soon," <] Peter Walsh noted. [> "They can’t keep missing these chances." <]
On the touchline, Maddox was getting more animated. He could see his team was on top.
"Keep going!" he shouted. "Keep the pressure on!"
The Hastings players looked tired. They were defending for their lives.
[> "This is backs-to-the-wall stuff from Hastings," <] Michael Harrison said. [> "How much longer can they hold out?" <]
The ball went out for a throw-in. Both teams took a moment to breathe.
[> "Intense few minutes of football," <] Peter Walsh observed. [> "The game is wide open now." <]
Rising Stars had momentum. But they were still 2-1 down.
The clock was ticking. Time was running out.
[> "Twenty-eight minutes left," <] Michael Harrison noted. [> "Plenty of time for more drama." <]
The crowd was on its feet. Home and away fans creating an incredible atmosphere.
This match had everything. Drama, controversy, and now a burst ball.
[> "What a story this is becoming," <] Peter Walsh said. [> "Football at its most unpredictable." <]
