Forest Ranger, starting from Picking Up a Lynx Girl-Chapter 93 - The Narcissistic White-tailed deer
Chapter 93: Chapter 93: The Narcissistic White-tailed deer Chapter 93: Chapter 93: The Narcissistic White-tailed deer “How strange, why is there only one deer?”
Chen Ying looked around and confirmed that, within the visible range, there was only this one male deer.
Usually, White-tailed male deer tend to live solitary lives, but for a herd in breeding season, such a handsome and strong buck would definitely not miss out on this wonderful time.
Chen Ying sensed the deer’s reluctance to communicate and didn’t dare get too close, so she could only circle around to observe whether it had any injuries or disabilities.
After much observation, she couldn’t detect the slightest imperfection that might make the females reject it.
“How bizarre, could this deer be choosing the life of a bachelor?”
Curious, Chen Ying decided to stay for the night to observe the surrounding White-tailed deer herd to see if she could discover anything.
There were plenty of small animals living in this area, and finding a safe camp spot took a lot of effort, but eventually they found a natural cave near the intersection of the shrubbery and the high mountain rocks to pitch their tent.

Once the tent was set up, they took out a portable stove to start a fire for cooking.
The highland cold made a hot meal more blissful than anything else.
What they brought up the mountain was roasted rice, which they would add to boiling water, then throw in dehydrated vegetables and luncheon meats like ham sausage, and simply add a bit of salt to eat.
It was similar to porridge, but the rice soup wasn’t thick, kind of like a soup with firm rice grains.
Sometimes they would also bring their own made scorched rice, which wasn’t a problem even if it got crushed; they would put it in the soup to cook until mushy—it was particularly tasty.
If they added some dried chicken to the soup and let it stew for an hour, that would make a chicken soup rice. Then adding some freshly picked wild vegetables and fresh fungi would make it delicious enough to melt in your mouth.
Unfortunately, this was a high-altitude cold region where all they could see either were rare plants that shouldn’t be picked at random or inedible young shoots of shrubs. Having dehydrated vegetables to eat was already a blessing of modern technology.
“My goodness, it’s so cold, is it going to snow tonight?”
After watching the weather for a while, Chen Ying paced and stomped her feet to stay warm.
If it really snowed, they would have to accelerate their return journey.
Although they would be heading downhill, once the temperature drops on the highland Snow Mountain, it happens so swiftly it could leave you frozen before you can react.
Yin Li was cold too but fared slightly better than Chen Ying.
He spent quite a while checking the GPS app and decided to change the route, heading southwest from the meadow’s position.
“There is a large expanse of high mountain meadow over there, as well as a forest fire station, and this season should be when the herders move their camps, so maybe we will encounter them.”
Based on the positions recorded backstage, it was about a bit more than half a day’s journey from them.
If they set off early tomorrow morning, they should be able to reach by the afternoon.
The caveat being that the snowstorm shouldn’t be too severe.
Luck can either be favorable or not.
They had a light snowfall in the first half of the night, which melted before it even settled.
The second half of the night brought a light rain, along with a particularly strong wind that howled and was unnerving.
Finally, at around eleven in the morning, the sun broke through the cloud cover, casting its golden rays onto the high mountain grassland.
Both of them were so cold they hadn’t dared leave the tent until the wind and rain stopped, then they cracked open a slit.
“My goodness, close it up, close it up, it’s so cold.”
Chen Ying, who hadn’t managed to put on her thermal gear, was hit by a gust of wind, shuddering all over as goosebumps instantly sprang up.
By the time both were wrapped in warm clothes and crawled out of the tent, they saw a cute little elf perched on a rock three meters away.
(Amazed at the slight fright, haven’t you seen Grandpa Rabbit sunbathing?)
The noise made by the two was quite noticeable, yet the mouse rabbit seemed either frozen stiff or something else, as it simply didn’t flinch or attempt to hide.
Chen Ying picked a tender grass root and placed it in front of the creature, which calmly glanced at it, nibbled it, and then continued sunbathing or pondering the rabbit life?
Chen Ying wanted to continue teasing it, but there was movement nearby, and this time the mouse rabbit reacted, quickly darting off the rock and into a temporary burrow beside a crevice.
Looking up, they saw the same white-tailed deer from yesterday, the one with the spotless bottom and the large, muscular build.
This time, it didn’t hasten to leave; rather, it approached their tent proactively, stopping about five meters away to gaze at them.
Instantly forgetting the fleeing mouse rabbit, Chen Ying repeated his trick, offering fresh branches and leaves to the beautiful, large deer.
“Hey, you’re truly beautiful.”
The white-tailed deer glanced at Chen Ying and lowered its head to take the tender leaves from his hand.
“Buddy, why aren’t you out looking for a girlfriend? Isn’t this the season to be having little ones?”
The white-tailed deer turned its face away, its eyes surprisingly carrying a hint of melancholy.
“Yes, but to have children, you need to fight other males first.”
That’s pretty normal, isn’t it? Isn’t that just how the animal kingdom works?
“I don’t like it, it’s too bloody. Two deer from my herd broke their antlers fighting over a mate, it was so ugly!”
The white-tailed deer seemed to be recalling that image, becoming a bit agitated and pawing at the ground.
“Why must they fight? With so many females, if one doesn’t work out just move to another, why fight?”
Chen Ying said nothing; he was stunned.
This seemingly strong buck was afraid of fighting?
Perhaps suddenly finding someone to confide in, the white-tailed deer abandoned its previous aloofness and became talkative, munching on the tender leaves of the shrubs while chatting with Chen Ying.
“How do my antlers look, pretty good, right? Not to brag, but there’s no deer around with antlers to rival mine. Do you think it would be a loss if I broke them in a fight?”
It did seem like a loss, no, but that wasn’t quite the point, Grandpa Deer, compared to breeding, what does it matter about your antlers, they’ll grow back if broken!
That was what Chen Ying thought, and also what he said, which upset the deer.
“Would the new ones look as good as these?”
“Also, when those two deer fought, the broken antlers were the least of their problems, did you know that? When I was young, I saw two deer from another herd fighting, and one of them got its antlers stuck in a tree fork, and then, it was left with just the head that was stuck!”
Chen Ying could sense the great fear in the deer’s heart but didn’t know how to comfort it.
Such occurrences do happen, though they are uncommon, right? That deer must have been fated to end that way.
The white-tailed deer, anxious, began to step lightly away from Chen Ying, lowering its head to nibble the moss on the ground.
“Quick, pack up, we need to leave; if we don’t set out now, we won’t make it to the meadow by evening.”
Chen Ying had already packed his belongings, and now he bundled up the tent and sleeping bag tightly. Both men shouldered their packs, ready to descend the mountain.
The white-tailed deer, curious, watched them, nibbling on sprouts while following behind them down the mountain.
After walking about a hundred meters and crossing the rocky area, below in the sparse, extensive shrubbery, over twenty white-tailed deer were foraging.
A bit further away, two bucks stood, eager to try their luck and win the affection of a special doe.
The white-tailed deer that had followed them down saw its herd and halted, wanting to retreat, yet it was captivated by one of the does.
In that moment, love struck its heart, irresistibly drawing it a few steps forward.
Just then, a buck with taller and more uniquely shaped antlers, like two sharp spears, charged from the side, aiming directly for the self-admiring white-tailed deer.
