Freedom Jumper-Chapter 159: Mysterious Murders
Chapter 159 - Mysterious Murders
Events in the Kingdom were obviously escalating. What Elijah and Niko had just barely escaped from was followed by the beginning of these mysterious murders. Any civilian unlucky enough to be caught at the wrong time during the night would be found laying on the floor – lifeless...
More news headlines were related to the happenings that occurred at the Barracks of Digon — the testing center for the future Paladins of the kingdom that would usually be used as a barracks for the peacekeeper's if an invasion were to occur, or as a simple training camp.
It was never talked about until now, but Niko had explained how he saw Elijah kill Oliver — after Oliver had killed his clone. Elijah mostly ignored the feeling he got from Niko's explanation and jumped at the sight of Richter walking through the front door.
"Thank the gods you two are alive..."
"Richter!" Elijah exclaimed while standing up in shock. Richter's face was badly bruised and somehow, he had the audacity to not even wince when speaking.
"Haha! You remind me of your father when you say my name like that."

"Wh-what do you mean?" Elijah was very curious, as he hadn't heard much about his fathers past – like Don was intentionally keeping it under wraps...
"Your father used to be surprised at everything single time I came back to the academy dorm with a beaten face. I can't even count how many times it happened, but what I do know is that he suddenly adopted this caring attitude... Treating me carefully as if he didn't want to say anything that would cause me any more pain than I went through..." Richter soon explained how he got into it with a group of competitive potion sellers.
Richter being Richter, he stood his ground without a care in the world, and revolted when instigated with a nice punch to the face. Quickly, enforcers interrupted and declared the incident as a mistake considering the sellers that confronted Richter have a reputation of doing whatever they could to earn more profits – even if it meant forcing others to break the law relating to physical harm.
Once finished, Richter glanced at the pile of Genny in denominations of fifty. "Is that for me?!"
"Yes, we have made quite the sum, and want to repay you for your generosity. Likely, we will make this all back within two days of hunting." Niko replied while neatly stacking the aged brown bills together with a barely seeable runic engraving – likely meant to prevent counterfeit bills from being produced.
Richter received the Genny and thanked them for their kindness. However, he immediately made his way into his bedroom, and fell asleep like a doll. Most likely, he had taken one of his own healing potions that was made with chamomile...
...
"Ah! Oh my days thank goodness you two are still alive!" Enida was the first face Elijah and Niko saw once entering the Tavenas Adventure Guild. As usual, there were a decent amount of people taking up the different desks – talking to their supervisor's as a way to comfort their minds and receive new missions.
Elijah had no intention of ever being short on money, and thought to find a mission worth their time instead of roaming.
"I understand, hunting beasts can get boring... especially if you always hunt the same species'. I do have a mission that you can join with Songa, Joffrey, Kithus, and a couple other adventurers. Although, it would be a three day adventure considering the mission takes place just outside the northern Fjords." Enida began pointing to a map she had pulled out of her desk while pulling her brown hair out of her eyes. The Northern Fjords were pointed out, and the outpost where the group will be staying for two night's was also pointed out.
The Northern Fjords were also named the God's Hand – intending it came from a powerful and unknown god that decided to shape the land full of beauty. Now, this place is filled with horrible beasts and even dungeons that bind unique beasts to them – with a benefit of receiving more power. Some of the rivers between the mountainous fjord's could be considered miniature seas now that Elijah was looking at them closely, and even a ginormous lake that came from the runoff of such mountains.
"What beasts would we be facing?" Niko asked the obvious question, and one that didn't matter too much.
"Mostly goblins, bears, and different bird species. All of which you two are capable of defeating. The bears are the beasts you have to be careful of, they hide inside the small caverns that ride up the start of the mountains, and like to hide behind the trees and attack when you least expect it. Your goal of this mission would be to exterminate as many packs of bears and goblins as possible."
"Songa will be keeping count and the group will be rewarded based on those numbers. Since there will be 14 people in your group, if you join, each person will be rewarded 100 Genny for each group you exterminate. Of course, this is besides the beast cores you harvest."
The offer seemed very enticing, roughly two days of killing beasts and the opportunity to gain 100 Genny per group killed!
"Let's do it. When does it start?" Elijah knew this is something he should not pass up. Not just because of the Genny he will earn, but because of seeing a new place. Dealing with his emotions through combat, and the chance to learn more about the war that is going on was another benefit.
Elijah bit his lip as he intently looked at the map... The outpost must be there for a reason, and even then, the outpost Enida had pointed out is one of many!
"On the last day of this fortnight, three days from now, the squad will leave within two large carriages just after dawn. It is a full day's journey to the outpost that you will be staying at, just to let you know... I will give Songa a heads up as she is the captain of this mission." Enida finalized the conversation after writing their names on the mission parchment. With that completed, she calmly stood up and went about her business after wishing Elijah and Niko farewell.
Now, it was up to Elijah and Niko to decide what they wanted to do with their day.
Quickly, they both began walking to the restaurant inside Treefell to order the storm of arrachera, and afterward walked around selling anything they did not want. For Elijah he had restocked on 5 orange tier mana batteries for his icebreaker pistol. After using it in front of the Spout of Orneas, he had yet to restock it. This cost him 600 Genny! How insane!
Inside Elijah's spatial storages were now his icebreaker pistol, poison knife, black shortsword, black knife, magical grenade, healing disc, four extra mana batteries, and his 4915 Genny.
Inside Niko's spatial storage was now a single orange tier runic knife, and 7715 Genny. Surprisingly, one of the knives Niko had sold was worth 1400 Genny on the open market, and was bought for 1200 after some negotiation.
While he was well under equipped compared to Elijah, he had thought about investing in some wind walkers which go for 3000 Genny on the open market.
Of course, this was the version that did not rely on a mana battery at a specific core level, but instead the user who had an awakened core. Most paladins who did not have a power nor affinity were not able to move mana around in their bodies.
Only the ones who forcibly awakened their cores or did so by reaching the age of around 30, allowed them to manipulate the pure mana in a very limited manner.
Thus, removing the need for mana batteries in many scenarios.
Although, they still had their uses even to elemental mages who had far more control and mana capacity than the mundane.
