Chapter 15: Stress

As soon as Xavier closed the door behind him, he headed straight for his office a few rooms down. Freya’s scent mixed with his still filled his nose and it took every bit of self-control in him to give her space.

His head wasn’t in the right space and his primal instincts were trying to take control. Trying to return to the source of calmness that drove the darkness away.

He ran a gloved hand through his hair in frustration before dropping it to his pants pocket. Out of habit he searched for his pack of smokes, only to realize that in the chaos he had left them in the kitchen.

Shit! Xavier cursed to himself, storming to his office.

As soon as he got there, he headed straight for his desk, ripping the top drawer open to find his extra stash of cigarettes. He quickly grabbed a pack and lighter, pulling out a cigarette and lighting it.

Taking a long drag, Xavier took in the toxic smoke, allowing it to calm him. He shut his eyes as he let out a puff, the actions sending a wave of ease within him.

He knew smoking was bad, that it could kill him one day, but it was the only thing that worked. The only thing that eased his mind when he was stressed... Well there was one other thing.

But he hated doing that. It’s how they controlled him. And one thing he hated more than anything was being controlled.

The heavy stench of smoke washed away the other scents covering them and soon his body calmed itself down. Enough for him to think properly. Today had been a complete shitshow.

He thought he’d been lucky giving the guys at the military the slip for a day, but it turned out the worse was back at home. Ethan was only meant to return from Devon City in two weeks’ time.

Which was more than enough time to prepare Freya for that bastard. And send him a message so he didn’t cause a scene. But that all went out of the window.

Now he was going to have to deal with that troublemaker and pray to the Beast God that Freya didn’t back out after the stunt he pulled. Fuck, he wanted to punch that idiot again.

All his carefully laid out plans went poof.

Sighing, Xavier finished his cigarette before sending a quick message to the housekeeping androids to clean the mess in the kitchen. He then sent another message to Ethan to come to his office in fifteen minutes.

Once he was done, he headed to a side room in his office to shower. He had it built a few years back, wanting to keep clean during times when he’d spend days working in his office and didn’t have much time to himself.

And to stay away from his bedroom...

Turning on the water to heat up, Xavier stripped off his clothes, removing his blood-stained gloves last. He gimmicked at the sight, wondering if he got any blood on Freya when he carried her.

He hoped not. With a sigh, he threw them away before putting on a new pair of gloves, not bothering to clean his wounds. They were already healed up.

He then stepped into the shower, allowing the water to wash away his troubles.

Freya watched the door click shut, listening out for footsteps. There were none and after a few minutes, she slipped out from the bed and hurryingly turned the lock, a sense of relief filling her at the sound of the lock clicking into place.

She was completely crazy to stay in this house a second longer after what happened in the kitchen. Yet here she was, going to sleep under the same roof as that bastard.

Flopping back onto the bed, she shut her eyes, wishing everything would just disappear. That this was all just a bad dream and that she was going to wake up back in her studio apartment.

She knew she was being delusional, but Freya knew she wasn’t cut out for this world. She barely escaped death upon arriving in this world and now she was staying in the same house as some psycho.

She was barely able to process the fact that what she’d seen in the kitchen was an illusion. That Ethan was messing around with her. It scared her to no end, making her question where the illusions began and where they ended.

How the hell did isekai protagonists make it seem so easy to adjust to a new environment? Especially one as crazy as this one. They acted so calm, like it was nothing, and adapted so quickly.

Meanwhile, she was ready to have a mental breakdown.

Eyes still shut, she pulled the covers over her body, wondering what in the world she was going to do now. She didn’t know how this world worked and would die outside the city.

She knew she wanted to leave this house, but realistically she couldn’t do that right now. Not until she understood how things worked. Perhaps then, she could strike it out on her own.

Relying on Xavier was dangerous. That was one thing she had learnt because even if he was being nice to her, that didn’t guarantee he’d be like that forever. And then there was that ticking time-bomb.

It was only a matter of time before he exploded again and Freya didn’t want to go through what she had again. Once was enough for a lifetime.

I’ll cooperate with Xavier for now, but I need to also plan an escape route for myself. Freya mused to herself, her body beginning to relax thanks to the soft mattress under her. But for now, I need to sleep...

She needed to properly rest before she made another decision. Because right now, her mind was exhausted from everything and stressed out. The worst situation to be in when making life-changing decisions.

With that in mind, she finally allowed her mind to drift, allowing darkness to wash over her.
