Chapter 17: A Brief Apology

Sunlight streamed through the curtains as a gentle breeze blew them away from the window and shone light onto the bed Freya was sleeping in. She grumbled as the light pulled her away from her dreams.

"Five more minutes..." Freya groggily mumbled to herself, pulling the covers over her head.

She wasn’t ready to get out of bed just yet, it being way too comfortable. But the brain fog in her head soon cleared up and she quickly realized this wasn’t the time to be lazing around.

Lifting herself up, she gazed at the window across from the room, blinking a few times as she took in the bedroom. Dark colored furniture with a large bed and a few cardboards. No pictures or things lying around.

She had peacefully fallen asleep, her body feeling refreshed despite everything that happened. She knew she had to deal with that problem, but right now, Freya wanted to enjoy the little quiet she had.

Even if it was fleeting.

As if the universe understood what she was thinking, there was a sudden knock on the door, followed by someone calling out, "Freya, are you up?"

Freya gazed over at the door a few meters away. She cautiously got out of bed and responded, "I’m up... Who’s there?"

"Xavier." The person on the other side of the door replied.

She got to the door as he spoke and was about to unlock the door when she paused. "Then tell me something only you would know."

It was a bit stupid to request that of Xavier, but after the stunt Ethan pulled yesterday, Freya was being wary about just letting anyone in. Granted, the wooden door wouldn’t do much to protect her if Ethan really wanted to get into the room.

But this was a precaution. Because she was not about to get tricked again. Hopefully.

"Right... Guess you’re worried about Ethan." Xavier sighed. "Well, I found you outside the city captured by Wanderers. They were all wolf beastmen. The first one to die was the one by you, spraying blood all over you. Then I took out the rest about nine in total-"

"Alright that’s fine." Freya interrupted, unlocking the door before sticking her head out.

Xavier stood in front of the door in a similar black outfit like the one he’d been wearing yesterday. Minus the long coat. His wavy hair was messy like he’d been running his hands through it. The only sign he wasn’t completely calm like what he was trying to present.

Suddenly a head popped out from behind him, familiar blue eyes gleaming at Freya. "Morning sister-in-law! Sleep well?"

"EEK!" Freya squeaked out, trying to slam the door shut.

Damn it! That bastard had fooled her again! She was going to need to make a code word with Xavier to deal with this guy’s craftiness.

"Wait Freya!" Xavier exclaimed, grabbing the door to stop her from shutting it close. "Ethan’s not here to harm you. I promise."

"Yip." Ethan nodded, pulling out a piece of paper from his pants pocket. "I even wrote a whole speech on why I was wro-"

Xavier hit him on the head with his free hand and muttered, "Quit your nonsense!"

"Calm down." Ethan rolled his eyes. "You’re going to give yourself high blood pressure if you keep that up..."

Freya sighed as Xavier looked ready to pummel Ethan. But as much as she didn’t mind seeing that, she preferred to just stay away from the snake beastman all together.

"Can you just say what you need to say, Ethan." Freya grumbled, opening the door a little more. "I’m not exactly keen on being around you."

"The feeling’s mutual." Ethan smiled widely. Xavier sent him a glare, so he coughed, "Anyway, I’m here to apologize for yesterday... It was wrong of me to use my ability on you like that. We cool now?"

"I’m not forgiving you if that’s what you’re looking for." Freya crossed her arms over her chest. "But I’ll accept your apology. Just don’t pull that shit again."

It was the best compromise she could make. Who knew how that bastard would react if she rejected his apology.

Ethan fake saluted. "Rogar that... Well, I’m off then. Congrats on the wedding bro. Don’t keep sister-in-law up too late!"

And with that he ran off before anyone could say another word. Xavier rubbed his forehead in frustration before turning to gaze at Freya. He opened and closed his mouth a few times, looking like he was trying to find the right words.

Finally Freya spoke up, "He’s not going to be hanging around, is he?"

"No." Xavier shook his head. "He’s going to live somewhere else instead... It’s for the best."

"Right. We should have a chat about that among other things..." Freya said. "But first, I wanna shower and get something to eat."

Her stomach let out a grumble at her words, almost as if to agree with her. She hadn’t eaten a proper meal in two days and she was beginning to feel the effects of it. Her body was feeling weak and it was only a matter of time before she got dizzy or worse fainted.

"Right..." Xavier murmured sheepishly. "Um... There should be some clean clothes in that top drawer. It should work until you get some proper clothing. I’ll head down to the kitchen in the meantime to have some breakfast prepared... Any requests?"

"Maybe porridge?" Freya mused.

She didn’t want to overwhelm her stomach after not eating properly for two days straight. Something simple like porridge should help with that.

Xavier nodded his head in understanding before he left. Freya then headed back inside the room, straightened up the bed before she grabbed some of Xavier’s clothes and headed to shower.

Once she was done showering, she tried looking for a new toothbrush to brush her teeth, but ended up having to just stick with mouthwash to rinse her mouth. Because she was not about to use Xavier’s toothbrush.

That was just nasty.

After making a mental note to get toiletries, Freya then headed downstairs to the kitchen, a little nervous about the chat she was about to have with Xavier.
