Freya and Her Beast Husbands-Chapter 21: General Markson
They soon entered the room General Markson had come from. A simple wooden table lay in the center of the beige colored room with a bunch of devices and paper stacked on the table. Three chairs surrounded the table.
General Markson took the chair on one side while Freya and Xavier took the other. Freya clenched her fists in her lap, straightening her back as General Markson stared at them quietly.
"This is Freya." Xavier finally said, his words cutting the tension in the air like a knife through butter. "She’s a Wanderer born with a guide ability and we’re agreed to get married."
"Oh?" General Markson raised a bushy eyebrow. "And what about your mission? You didn’t abandon that for something else, did you?"
Xavier pulled out a small leather pouch from his coat and tossed it onto the table. "The mission was completed and I even got a few extras from the Wanderers holding Freya captive."
"Hah! Never a dull moment with you..." General Markson shook his head, taking the leather pouch. He then turned his attention to Freya, pushing a similar looking scanning device over to her. "Not to say that I don’t believe you... But formalities."
Freya blinked twice, surprised by how easy this was going, before she said, "It’s fine... I-I just put my hand on it, right?"
As soon as she said those words, she wanted to cringe. Of course, she was meant to put her hand on it. What else was it going to scan?
"Correct." General Markson nodded his head. "The law requires me to check that you’re not registered with any of the other cities before registering you here. Make sure you’re not a missing female and all that. Of course, this would’ve been done yesterday if someone hadn’t gone rogue."
"I see..." Freya mused, placing her hand on the scanning device, a little surprised by how cool it was to touch.
It seemed being registered to a city was similar to having a citizenship or permanent residence in a country. Although it seemed that where you were registered restricted where you could go.
The scanning device suddenly beeped followed by a robotic voice which said, "No matches found."
"Well that’s a relief." General Markson sighed, loosening his tie suddenly before he glanced at Xavier and grumbled, "Fuck... You like causing shit. I was meant to spend the day with my wife, you know. Not get stuck in this place dealing with this."
"Really..." Xavier said deadpanned. "Guess we’ll have to make this a quick one."
Freya gazed over at him, almost gaping. Xavier a hundred percent knew that information and he wasn’t even trying to play dumb. What a snake. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝚠𝚎𝚋𝗻𝗼𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝚘𝐦
"You’re getting your pay docked for two months for that stunt you pulled." General Markson murmured before turning to Freya once more. He then asked, "Are you sure you want to marry this guy? If not, I can have the FPA set you up on some blind dates and stuff... Get you all set up in the city and everything."
Freya stared at the older beastmen, tempted by his offer. Not the blind dates part, she was no way ready for any kind of relationship right now. Even if she was ironically getting married today.
However, the thought of getting set up in the city without needing Xavier’s help did sound tempting. In fact, a large part of her wanted to agree to it. But...
"It’s alright." Freya said. "We already agreed to get married. A promise is a promise."
"He’s not threatening you, is he?" General Markson narrowed his eyes at Xavier. "You’re free to say no. I won’t let anything happen to you. In fact, you’ll give me a great excuse to pummel him."
Xavier shook his head at the older beastman while Freya choked back a laugh. General Markson didn’t seem so bad anymore.
"It’s really fine. I promise." Freya murmured with a faint smile.
"Alright then I won’t push." General Markson shrugged, grabbing some papers. "Just fill in this form and give it to the guy in the front. You can then head to the FPA to get your marriage registered... Oh and here’s some stuff for you, Freya. The FPA will probably give you more things and ask some things, but here’s just some basic things you need to know."
Freya took the folder General Markson was holding out to her, a little curious about what was inside it. Xavier, meanwhile, took the forms and pulled out a pen from his pocket.
"Thanks." Freya said.
"No problem." General Markson stood up. "My number is in there, so call if you have any trouble... Anyway, I best be off. Don’t want to leave my wife hanging for too long. Come visit sometime."
"Sure." Xavier said without looking up from the form he was filling in.
And with that the older beastman was gone. Freya watched him until he left and then turned back to Xavier, who was sliding the form over to her.
She gazed over at it, seeing it was some kind of report form along with a registration form which Xavier had left empty.
"Can you read and write or do I need to do that?" Xavier suddenly asked. He then muttered, "That bear beastman really doesn’t think sometimes.... But I guess it was the only way to stop this from going on for hours."
Freya took it that General Markson was a bear beastman. She then answered Xavier’s question, "I can read and write."
She wasn’t sure how, but she could understand this world’s language. Probably thanks to that god. Which made things much easier for her at least. She quickly filled out the registration form and once she was done they left after handing in the form to the bored looking guy.
When they got back into Xavier’s car, Freya finally asked a question that had been bugging her, "Why all the paperwork? Wouldn’t it be easier to have it all digital?"
"It would be, but it’s good to have hard copies of everything." Xavier answered, driving the car into the city. "One of the cities had a massive hacking incident that almost wiped all its data... So, they keep multiple backups of everything in case."
"Ah..." Freya mused, glancing down at the folder General Markson had given her.
She had some important reading to do before they got to the FPA. Whatever that was.
