Chapter 22: Learning Some More About This World

The folder had multiple pages with the inside cover containing some writing. It seemed General Markson had not only left his number, but address too as well as some other places she could contact if she needed.

It kind of made her happy to see it, even if the whole thing was kind of rushed. At least now she knew she had some kind of support if things went south with Xavier.

Though it would probably be best if she widened that support system and found a way to rely on herself. Depending solely on one person could be quite dangerous.

Because some people were really good at hiding their true nature.

Freya then turned her attention to the first page, seeing that it contained basic information about the city and its laws. It was all pretty similar to the laws in her world until she got to the section about beastwomen.

All females are required to register with the FPA (Female Protection Association) from birth and are expected to go in for monthly checkups. Abilities must be registered when awakened. Upon reaching eighteen, females will be given a place of residence if needed and will be required to go on blind dates if they don’t have a partner already.

If a female doesn’t have any partners by twenty-four, the FPA will assign them five partners. Those with less than five partners by twenty-five will also be assigned more partners. Only those with guide abilities may be married to hunters...

Now Freya understood why General Markson said she’d get set up on blind dates. It was bloody required by law. She knew multiple partners were a thing considering what Xavier said to her.

But to think she’d be forced to take at least five partners and by the time she was twenty-five... Freya wasn’t sure if she could do that. Especially when she was twenty-four now. Freya sighed, deciding to read on.

Wanderer born females will be given two years to adapt to the city if they are of age. If required they’ll be given a guardian. Those under eighteen will stay under the care of the FPA until they’re of age. Physical and mental conditions will be taken into account if need be.

Any females with guide abilities are encouraged to help at the Guide Center and will be given benefits based on their contributions. Females can work, however, it is not required and rather are encouraged to focus on getting pregnant...

Well, at least she could take her time with this. However, she wasn’t exactly keen on the whole pregnancy thing. It wasn’t that she hated the idea of kids... She just didn’t want to be seen as some kind of baby making machine.

And this world was definitely pushing that. But what else could she expect from such a world. She’d been denying it to herself, ignoring the sides, but she couldn’t do that any longer.

This was undoubtedly some kind of beastworld. Even if it was on the more futuristic side. And this kind of world was always suffering some kind of fertility crisis requiring females to have multiple partners.

She’d read more than enough online stories to have a sense of the genre. Even if it wasn’t something she commonly read.

Freya gazed at the papers before her, knowing she was going to have to deal with the whole five partners requirement sooner or later. One way was to leave this place, but she bet the other cities had similar requirements.

Outside the city wasn’t exactly an option either unless she wanted round two with another group of Wanderers or monsters. The thought made her shiver.

Which caught Xavier’s attention. He glanced over at her for a moment before he asked, "Are you cold?"

"No, I’m fine..." Freya quickly answered. "Just thinking about something..."

"Hmm..." Xavier gazed over at the folder in her lap before looking back at the road. "You can ask me any questions if you want."

"I don’t-" Freya started, but then paused for a second. She did have a question actually. Quite an important one at that. Taking a deep breath, Freya asked, "Hey Xavier... Do you want kids?"

She knew it was a crazy question to ask, but considering how this world was, it was probably best she asked. Xavier promised not to touch her without permission, but he never said he didn’t expect kids.

And she needed to have that line of expectation clear before they did anything permanent..

Xavier, however, seemed shocked by her sudden question, breaking hard for a moment. Freya threw a hand out to stop herself from going forward, a few pages tumbling out of the folder.

As she moved to pick them up, Xaiver turned to stare at her before turning back to face the road, soon regaining his composure. He then continued driving like nothing had happened.

"No." Xavier finally answered in a low tone. "I don’t want children..."

"I see..." Freya mused, fidgeting with the corner of the folder.

She knew it was an awkward question, something unexpected, but she had to ask. And thankfully, Xavier had no expectations. She was curious as to why he didn’t want kids.

But decided not to ask. Some things were best left alone and these were one of those things.

Freya soon went back to reading through the rest of the pages, getting a better grasp of this world. However, she was only halfway though when they came to a stop and Xavier turned the car off.

"We’ve arrived." Xavier simply stated before getting out of the car.

Freya closed the folder and unbuckled her seatbelt, ready to open the door. Only to find the door already opened with Xavier holding out a gloved hand. She took it and the two walked through the underground parking to the nearby elevator.

They entered and Xavier pressed on the number one, sending the elevator up. It soon stopped and opened the doors to reveal a massive lobby with beastmen and even a few beastwomen roaming around.

Some were sitting down in chairs while others were chatting to beastmen at a large reception desk in the back. The place was slick with glass windows and contemporary styled furniture.

Much different from all the concrete in the military department.

"Welcome to the FPA." Xavier said as they stepped out of the elevator. "Time to get this marriage registered."
