Galaxy Domination Guide-Chapter 419 - 410 Surface Cities (Part 2)
Hundred-Year City might not have been built to the highest standards among the Star Alliance cities; it couldn’t compare with the three-year transformation of Earth’s Imperial Capital, the contoured cities like London, nor with Tai Ping City where the Star Alliance government was located. However, in both scale and level of modernity, it could at least be considered on the second-tier level within the Star Alliance cities.
Even to many Earthlings, Hundred-Year City appeared trendy, sci-fi, and powerful, not to mention for the inhabitants of Taoran Star who had been living in underground shelters for a hundred years. In fact, some people who had come out of the shelters still felt uncomfortable with the sunlight and the fresh air.
The strange atmosphere of Taoran Star had a strong ability to refract light, making the sun here not too dazzling; yet some former shelter residents still shielded their bodies with clothing, as if afraid.
Bu looked at the people from the shelter somewhat shamefully, and said to Bai Zhongqi, "It’s like we’re lowly rats that have lived in the dark and damp, and now that we have come to the surface and been exposed to the sunlight, we feel uncomfortable and almost unworthy of such light."
"After all, you have lived like this for a hundred years, and gotten accustomed to the underground life for a hundred years," Bai Zhongqi said indifferently, "it will take some time to adjust."

Full of gratitude, Bu said to Bai Zhongqi, "No amount of thanks would be enough, Mr. Bai. You rescued us from the cramped and narrow shelter, allowed us to live in the sunlight like our ancestors, provided us with enough food and many other benefits—things we couldn’t have imagined."

Bai Zhongqi smiled and said, "I completely broke the power structure of your shelters, and even dissolved all the Hunting Groups. It’s good that you don’t hold that against me."
Bu shook his head and waved his hands repeatedly, saying, "How could it be? Everyone joined the Hunting Group just to survive better. Now that we are living in this beautiful and rich city, the Star Alliance provides us with clothing, food, housing, and transportation. Even if it required a great sacrifice from us, we would accept it."
Bai Zhongqi just laughed and didn’t speak. What he didn’t say was—even if you resented me for it, I wouldn’t care.
He continued, "Most of the new residents from the shelters have no education, which is obviously not conducive to their personal lives and unsuitable for the development of the Star Alliance. Juveniles coming here will enter full-time schools to start learning cultural knowledge, and adults, if employed, should also allot 4-6 hours a day for study time."
Bu was not illiterate, but he knew that Hundred-Year City, after all, was a Star Alliance city. The language to be used here would be the Star Alliance Chinese. Despite his age, he still felt motivated to learn this language.
"I wonder what kind of jobs the new residents can do now?"
"Technically demanding jobs are hard for new residents to handle; they’ll need some time for learning and training," Bai Zhongqi said. "I know some workers from your shelters have certain knowledge and can perform complex tasks; they might be assigned to technical positions. But to accommodate every new resident, Hundred-Year City has also created some low-skill positions. For example, jobs like janitors, chefs, service staff, sales associates, and so on."
In the Shelter 101, residents had to work to receive their rationed food. Ordinary people did various jobs for the elites, from making essential goods to providing all kinds of domestic services, and the workload was considerable.
Bu, anxious yet curious, asked Bai Zhongqi, "Mr. Bai, what kind of job have you arranged for me?"
Bai Zhongqi laughed, patted the old hunter on the shoulder, and said, "You have decent management skills. Although Hundred-Year City has broken up the original structures of various shelters, mixing all people across different communities, each community still needs administrative personnel. I plan to appoint you as the director of one of the communities in Hundred-Year City, where your job will be to serve the community members. You would communicate any demands and issues they have. Essentially, minor household and community matters will be under your jurisdiction."
Later, Bu quickly learned what the so-called community director’s job entailed. In some ways, it resembled the shelter leadership, but many powers had been stripped away, such as security and force, as public security was managed by the city police bureau. However, compared to the community offices in Country C on Earth, the community director position Bu took had more power, being responsible for managing the citizens’ supplies.
Bai Zhongqi didn’t have time to play tour guide for Bu and the others indefinitely; he was only here as an Agent to inspect, and soon disappeared.
That evening, Bu moved into his new home, a 45 square meter apartment. The apartment building was located in the western district of Hundred-Year City, also the area of the community he now headed. Even though the apartment had little decoration, when Bu sat on the soft sofa, gazing at the bustling city center of Hundred-Year City across the river, he still felt as if he was living in a completely different world.
In the morning, he had been on his last breath, possibly dying at any moment; by evening, he had shifted to a completely different life.
Like many Star Alliance city communities, there was a residents’ dining hall in the community. Bai Zhongqi didn’t know what Taoran Star-style food was like; the dining hall provided all Earth foods. Bu had never eaten rice before, but its aroma alone made him feel it was more noble than anything he had ever eaten. Accompanied by a few side dishes, Bu couldn’t imagine the kind of "luxurious" life the Star Alliance people led.
His nephew Bang also came to visit his uncle. Unlike his uncle, he had been placed in another community without an administrative job, preparing to enter school for education.
Looking at his nephew, Bu touched the soft bed in the bedroom and said with a wry smile, "I had expected the Star Alliance to treat us well, but I never imagined it would be this extreme. Look at this soft bed. I’m used to sleeping on the ground and wooden boards. Lying on such a comfortable bed, I don’t even know if I can sleep."
Bang, having seen many things in a single day, hadn’t yet entered the excitement phase. He said, "Uncle, you’re getting on in years; it’s about time you enjoyed yourself. I am still wondering if this is all a dream. The Star Alliance people didn’t want anything from us, yet they took us out of the shelter, gave us a city, provided us with high buildings to live in and gourmet food to eat, education and jobs—it’s incredible."
Bu shook his head and said, "Who says we haven’t paid a price?"
Bang asked, "What have we paid?"
"It’s our planet. While we’re enjoying everything provided by the Star Alliance, Taoran Star has already become property of the Star Alliance."
