Gamer Reborn-Chapter 484
Chapter 484
Considering the amount of people that were joining them for the trip Ajax made the decision to change their approach slightly. The change in route was clearly not time efficient but it did mean that they would all pass by House Hearthbound’s new manor. Ajax had even exited the carriage and chose to ride horse just so he could have a better vantage point to the people’s reaction to his roads.
“What is that?”
“It doesn’t even look that grand.”
“I heard he just gained a mountain of gold and he is wasting it on the ground he walks?”
The initial reactions to the road were negative. The concrete’s grey color and bland appearance didn’t help its initial impression but all of that changed once the carriages made their way onto the flat smooth road.
For a moment the horses bucked, the sharp change in the resistance to what they were pulling caught them by surprise before the speed started to increase. That small moment it took to adjust was enough to gather every attention before the increase in speed caused a multitude of different reactions.
The Healing Union was very appreciative of the revelation, not for the benefits it brought but because of what it would mean for their future joint ventures with House Hearthbound. More than a few members that were moving to this new research outpost had thought it was only a political move done by the crown or their Guild Master depending on how much each member knew about who truly led them.

“All that to save a bit of time?” House Manashaper’s retainers didn’t see the value straight away. Ajax didn’t blame them, almost all of them were high level combatants and some could even give him a beating, at least for now, from their point of view it would seem like a boring extravagance since if they were in a real hurry terrain wouldn’t slow them down.
“What is this?!”
“How rare is this rock?”
“Did you use a spell to mold it?”
“How expensive was it?”
The merchants and crafters however collectively lost their cool and swarmed towards Ajax all but demanding answers. For them such a discovery was groundbreaking. Ajax didn’t even bother to hide his grin at their reaction but it wasn’t yet time to reveal anything. He wanted to tie the reveal of concrete to his school announcement making it seem like he needed the workforce to spread his invention to help gain support of the merchants.
As they approached the gates of Lessis it was clear to see that they had been expected. “Did you see a scout making note of our movement?” Ajax asked the elite retainers that had joined him and Lexi.
“No, my Lord.” the response caused Ajax to furrow his brows.
“Then how did they know we were going to come from this gate?” Lexi asked.
“I would say they predicted our plans to show off the road, Lexi.” the elite answered casually. “But given your bethroved’s creativity I wouldn’t put it past his family to have a new enchantment or skill that outranges my perception.”

Being a relatively new House built on the back of Duke Manashaper meant that all of their elite retainers had been close to the family, this meant they had been there as Lexi grew up and were much more casual with her when they weren’t in a noble function.
As they passed through the open gates Ajax looked around for his family. It didn’t take long to find both his mother and father as well as Judy were waiting for him. More surprising however was the presence of House Nestor. Not only the Baron, but his wife and two of their children had also been waiting and bowing low he passed. A few feet from them was Warden Grievous, the man gave a shallow bow as he kept his focus on House Nestor ready to intercept anything stupid they might have tried.
“You could have warned us you were planning to bring so many people before you left.” Judy quickly joined him as she guided her own horse to walk besides Ajax’s. “We barely had enough time to get the housing situation sorted and even so it's going to be cramped for a while.”
“It wasn’t exactly something I planned.” Ajax defended himself. “I didn’t expect so many crafters to accept our offer.”
One of the things Ajax had overlooked when he accounted for which craters would be willing to join his territory to teach for the amount he offered was how badly some crafters needed a backer, one who could afford to help them grow. What was a few hours each day teaching if they got the opportunity to prove they had the skills and talent to be worth investing in. The best crafters that had joined him were at the peak of Journeyman almost Master crafters in their fields who simply couldn’t afford their own reagents to push further and were forced to scrape for every bit in hopes of pushing themselves past their block.
“You do know the Healing Union should probably start their own village not too far away.” Judy pushed on. “With how many people have moved to Lessis there is no space for their research compound.”
“Not a village.” Ajax said with a smile. “A town. One made of concrete.”
The Healing Union’s town would be the perfect place for Ajax to show just how useful the grid pattern could be when it came to city building. The clear layout, lack of dead ends as well as ease of navigation was something he hoped to put to good use as society expanded their small villages and towns with the population increase.
“You figured out how to improve it so that you can use it for buildings?” Silvia wasn’t one to eavesdrop on a conversation but as the person that had managed most of the headache when it came to housing she was eager for an answer. “How soon can we start?”
“I don’t have the finished formula yet.” Ajax could see a hint of disappointment in his mother’s eyes for a brief moment before it vanished like it never existed and the same excitement at his return was there once again. “But Professor Vilethorn had a few ideas that seem promising.”
After a few more moments catching up, Ajax's family quickly broke off as they each started leading different groups towards their new accommodations. Ajax meanwhile headed straight for the mayor’s office where he would meet his brother. Ajax was looking forward to letting his brother know that Knight Bonehammer and his family had decided to join them in their Duchy.
Both of Knight Bonehammer’s sons would make for a great new addition to the cities guards while also being clear retainers of House Hearthbound, as they were in the mid sixties this would put them almost at the top in terms of strength but below the Warden.
Seeing that House Nestor was still following him with the Warden not far away Ajax didn’t waste any time in heading to the mayor’s office. He wanted to know what they wanted and he also had a decree from the king taking away their nobility, that had been passed but their attitude towards them before it was delivered would dictate how their future interactions would also go.
Tom wasn’t surprised to see Ajax and Lexi entering his office but when one of House Manshaper’s retainers also entered followed by Warden Grievous as well as four members of House Nestor even his rather large office was beginning to feel a little small.
“There’s less of you than there was the last time.” Ajax was the first to break the silence after giving Tom a hug. A light squeeze on his hand from Lexi signaled that she would take the conversation from here but that she would follow his lead in dealing with them.
“Indeed, my Lord.” Baron Nestor said with a bow. “We ask that you excuse my youngest child, his demeanor is not fit for polite company at the moment.”
Ajax managed to keep his eyes from bulging at the respectful way the Baron had addressed him but his eyebrows still made a dash for his hairline. That was not what he had been expecting, if the small self satisfied smile on the Warden’s face was any indication however he had clearly been the one to help guide House Nestor towards this approach.
“Am I to understand that you no longer contest our claim to your barony?” Lexi asked, her tone calm and non-combative when bringing up their previous accusations.
“That was a foolish claim made in haste and error of judgement, my Lady.” Baron Nestor answered. “Looking at it more clearly I am not sure I even have the standing to even be heard on such a claim anymore, do I?”
“You do not.” Lexi nodded as Ajax produced the King’s decree stripping House Nestor of their noble title.
Before the conversation could go any further a flaming ball of scales burst through the door. Ajax wasn’t at all alarmed, what he was was disappointed. It seemed the final member of the former House Nestor had joined them along with his bond.
