Gamer Reborn-Chapter 485
Chapter 485
As smoking splinters shower the room from the entrance almost everyone reacts with surprise. The flaming salamander hisses threateningly as a malicious laugh follows it from behind and a deformed shadow takes the form of a man in the light of the flames.
Both Ajax and Lancel, House Manashaper’s retainer, had felt the presence of the salamander before it even broke through the door, yet neither saw it as a threat so they didn’t react. Even with everyone else surprised at its appearance they didn’t make a single move, they knew they didn't have to.
“Who do you think yo-” The final member of House Nestor is loses not just his voice but also his smile as he watches his flaming salamander be crushed into the floor, it’s previous slow threatening hiss now a terrified whine as a large shadow cat pressed its long claws deep into its neck and looks towards Tom waiting for his decision, the sudden overwhelming assault smothering the flames as a deep shadow covers the body of the salamander
Ajax willfully ignores the latest human arrival, he had already decided to leave his fate up to his brother, but he does take an interest in the bond. The salamander is no slouch, [Inspector’s Eye] puts the creature at level forty five, a very respectable level for a creature that is about one year younger than Fluffy and that House Nestor certainly didn’t spend a fortune on.
Much as he despises the salamanders for what they did to his home Ajax would be a fool not to realise the potential value of raiding their nests for eggs and more potential bonds for his House, the big difference however would be that he would ensure his people would defend the retaliation from the salamanders instead of letting them destroy village after village until the reach Lessis and are stopped by the fortified walls.
“Why are you here?” House Nestor’s eldest child angrily accused his brother with a sneer on his face.
“That is a great question.” Tom finally spoke. “Why are you in my office?” A nod towards Fluffy was enough for the shadow cat’s paw to press harder on the salamander’s neck, turning the loud whimpering in muffled choking as the lizard fought for breath.
“How could he have thought this was a good idea?” Ajax couldn’t help but wonder aloud.
“How about you take a seat next to your family.” Tom’s words might have sounded like an offer but everyone knew it was a command. When the shocked young noble didn’t move the Warden moved quickly and put a friendly seeming hand on his shoulder with an iron grip as he guided the disfigured man into his seat. “Lady Manashaper, you were saying.”
With everything under control Tom was looking to get the original meeting back on track. Lexi simply nodded as she took the decree from Ajax and read its contents aloud. As far as decrees went it was straight to the point. With flowery language it called out House Nestors failures to protect their people and revoked their title.
This was the moment Ajax was waiting for, one of the big reasons why he was so calm during the previous altercation was that he didn’t want to risk missing it as soon as he verified there was no threat his full attention was brought back to [Inspector’s Eye] he wanted to catch the moment House Nestor’s lost their noble Trait.
Despite watching it happen Ajax wasn’t able to feel or detect anything changing. One second the trait Baron was there when he inspected them and the next it was gone, the one thing he did pick up on however was a grimace on the former Baron’s face.

“What’s wrong with him?” Ajax asked as he watched the baron grunt in pain.
“He must have had a skill above level one hundred.” Lancel answered, “without the Baron Trait he no longer has the capacity of having such a high level skill.”
“So he lost the levels?” Ajax’s shocked exclamation was interpreted as worry by others, they didn’t know that he didn’t have anything to worry about thanks to Divine Witness.
“No, his skill remained the same level.” Lexi explained. “It won’t grow any further until he once again receives a Trait or a boost that will allow him to grow it and using the skill will come with a pressure, a reminder from the System that he is using a skill beyond his limits.”
A look from Tom was enough to let Ajax know that this wasn’t the time for him to satisfy his curiosity. “Now, since it seems you had already predicted your loss of status, could you enlighten us as to the reason for your audience today, Mr Nestor?” The entire family flinched at the address, the loss of their noble title being something they would have to take their time to adapt to.
“We asked for this audience in hopes of a future beneficial relationship.” Mr Nestor said with a strained smile and a sharp glare towards his youngest. “Considering the past and even recent events we recognise that this would take time and effort from our side.”
“What effort are you making?” Tom asked feigning ignorance to gauge their reaction.
Over the last couple of weeks it was easy for Tom to notice that House Nestor had used their influence to help them with their preparations. Four different favors had been called in to help ensure Lessis’s explosive growth could happen without any major issues, these were all favors that House Hearthbound hadn’t had to give out.
“We’re here to offer House Hearthbound the option to buy our auction house.” As Mrs Nestor said this she placed a piece of paper on the desk and pushed it towards Tom.
Tom looked at the number on the paper and one of his eyebrows rose. The offer was slightly under a fair price for the auction house, the discount they got however wasn’t the surprising part. What was surprising was how attentive the former nobles had been to House Hearthbound’s movements and needs. The auction house presented the perfect location and building that could be remodeled into the first school. Doing so would allow them to save months especially with the already in demand construction going on in the city.
“You’re wh-hmmph” the youngest member of the family didn’t even get to finish his sentence as his oldest brother covered his mouth and forcefully shut his jaw with a crunch. A few of the youngest’s teeth were now loose.
“We’ll accept your offer.” Tom said with a nod. “A retainer will arrive in the next few days with the payment. Thank you Jacob.”
“Thank you for the opportunity, mayor.” Jacob addressed Tom before rising and dragging his youngest brother up with him. “I’ll ensure my brother improves his manners before you see him next in two weeks time for his hearing.”

With that every member of the Nestor family rose their feet yet they made no motion to leave. Instead they all looked towards Ajax and waited for him to dismiss them. A simple nod from him was enough and all of them quickly left but not before a few polite ‘My Lord’ were uttered at their dismissal.
“That was surprising.” Ajax said.
“That auction will allow us to move forward with the school within a month, not only that but they gave us a price under the value it held months ago, let alone now.” Tom said. “Not to mention that Jacob isn’t that bad. Before we left for the capital he had started making a few inquiries about getting me a position as Knight.”
“That was a rather calculated move considering he clearly knew about your brother.” Lexi pointed out.
“Calculated or not he was still genuinely nice to me, more than that he was also very much displeased when he found out about what his younger brother did with the salamanders and tried to make things better for the people who suffered.” Tom said with a shrug. “All I’m saying is maybe he’s worth giving a chance.”
“I’ll leave it up to you.” Ajax said, more than happy not to have to deal with it. There was already so much he had on his plate anything he could leave to others was a win. “Just be careful.”
With that said Ajax turned his attention to Fluffy. “You did so well didn’t you, yes you did, yes you did.” Ajax praised and pampered the shadow cat while also retrieving a rather large monster core to feed the feline. “That lizard stood no chance.”
“It’s good to have you back.” Tom said with a laugh as he watched his younger brother before turning to Lexi and giving her a hug. “Welcome to the family. You’re stuck with us now.”
Lexi returned the hug and answered with a single word. “Good.”
“Warden, I’ll be retiring to the estate for the day. If anything comes up send a message.” With that Tom lead them out of the office eager to return to the estate and welcome his brother and fiance home properly.
