Garbage Warrior System-Chapter 26: The New Protocol
Chapter 25 – The New Protocol
The dawn after the Root Core’s rebirth was strangely calm. The world, once in chaos, seemed to breathe a long, tired sigh. The air shimmered slightly with data particles drifting like ash, dissolving in the sunlight.
Rai stood on the ridge overlooking what used to be Sector Zero—a wasteland of melted metal, broken concrete, and veins of glowing green code embedded in the earth. Yet among the ruin, signs of life started to emerge—grass tinged with a faint glow, trees made of both wood and nano-metal, their leaves crackling with a light static in the wind.
It was beautiful, in a way that felt both foreign and familiar.
Yuki approached slowly, her soft footsteps crunching against the crystallized soil. “The readings are stable,” she murmured, holding her data tablet, the glowing holograms reflecting in her calm, tired eyes. “The Coexistence Protocol is merging bio-life and system energy perfectly. For the first time in decades, we’re not decaying.”
Rai’s gaze remained fixed on the horizon. “For the first time in decades, we’re not entirely human either.”
His voice carried the weight of truth. Each word reflected the fatigue of endless conflict.
Yuki looked up at him. “Is that so bad?”
He turned to her, offering a faint smile. “Not if it means survival.”
But as he spoke, a flicker ran across his right hand—zzzk—shhhh—his skin briefly transparent, revealing thin, silver threads pulsing beneath. He flexed his fingers, willing the glitch to fade.
Yuki noticed. “It’s getting worse, isn’t it?”
Rai exhaled. “The System isn’t finished with me. The Root Code was reborn through my connection to it—I’m part of its operating base now.”
Yuki bit her lip. “You mean you’re the new interface.”
“Maybe,” he said quietly. “Or perhaps I’m just the first hybrid to survive the merge.”
A deep hum echoed through the air, making them both turn. From the ruins of the Spire, several crystal-like pods rose, glowing faintly blue. Inside, faint silhouettes stirred—humanoid shapes, eyes opening one by one.
Yuki’s scanner pinged wildly. “Energy signatures—human and system-mixed. These are new awakeners, Rai. The first generation under the Coexistence Protocol.”
He stepped forward, watching as the pods began to dissolve into vapor, releasing their occupants. They were humans—or what remained of humanity. Their skin shimmered faintly with data marks; their veins glowed with soft, pulsing light.
One of them, a young man with black hair and molten silver eyes, stepped forward and looked directly at Rai. “Are you our origin?” he asked in a low, steady voice.
Rai froze.
Yuki whispered, “They’re aware. They remember the Core sequence—they recognize you.”
Rai sighed deeply. “No. I’m not your god. I’m just the man who refused to let this world die.”
The young hybrid smiled faintly. “Then we’ll live for that world.”
But before Rai could respond, the horizon trembled. A surge of static rolled through the ground, making the hybrids stagger. Yuki’s tablet flashed red.
“Unstable energy wave incoming!” she shouted. “It’s not natural—it’s being transmitted!”
THRMMM—BOOM!
A blinding light erupted from the far side of the city, tearing through the reconstructed skyline like a sonic storm. Waves of blue-white energy cascaded outward, warping reality itself.
Rai raised his arm to shield his eyes. “What the hell—?”
Crow’s voice crackled over the comms. “Rai! It’s the rogue awakeners—we’ve got multiple breakouts across Sectors 3 through 7! They’re rejecting the Coexistence merge and trying to override the new energy streams!”
Renji’s voice followed, rough and urgent. “They call themselves ‘The Nullborn.’ They’ve taken control of an entire reconstruction zone!”
Yuki’s expression darkened. “So it begins again.”
Rai clenched his fists, his eyes flashing faintly silver. “Then we’ll stop it before it becomes another war.”
—
By midday, they reached the edge of Sector 4—a once-barren area now thriving with hybrid plants, glowing vines climbing over remnants of buildings. But the beauty was marred by signs of violence—scorched earth, melted data fragments, and collapsed structures.
They moved quietly through the wreckage, Crow leading the way with his rifle raised.
“Visual contact,” he muttered.
At the center of the square, a group of Nullborn hybrids stood in formation, their leader floating several feet above the ground. His aura glared violently—pure binary light swirling around him. His voice was mechanical, layered with human tones.
“You brought this upon yourselves!” the man shouted. “The Protocol is a cage! The Root Code binds us all! We were promised freedom, not fusion!”
Rai stepped forward calmly. “Freedom without order is extinction. You think you can sever the link and stay alive?”
The Nullborn leader smirked. “We don’t want to survive. We want to ascend.”
With that, he unleashed a wave of raw energy—WHHHHRRRRMMM—CRACK!!—sending debris flying. Rai barely dodged, slamming his palm into the ground. A silver ripple spread outward, forming a barrier around the others.
“Stay behind me!” he shouted.
Yuki, focusing her power, extended her hand, sending out stabilizing beams of light that countered the distortions. “Their code’s corrupted—it’s feeding off instability!”
Crow fired off suppressive rounds—TAT-TAT-TAT!—each hit dispersing fragments of light. Renji dashed through the smoke—CLANG! SWISH!—his blades cutting cleanly through two attackers who reformed moments later.
“They’re regenerating through network echoes!” he grunted. “They’re using memory loops!”
Rai’s eyes glowed silver-white as the System interface lit up his vision. [System Sync: Root Core – Partial Link Active]
He clenched his jaw. “If they’re using echoes, then I’ll overwrite them!”
BOOM!
Energy erupted from his hand, creating a shockwave of digitized light that scattered the Nullborn into flickering shadows. The leader shouted, trying to resist, “You can’t rewrite us! We are the future!”
Rai’s voice boomed. “Then your future ends now!”
With one final effort, he unleashed an Overdrive pulse—SHHHRAAAAAA!!—erasing the corrupted code and leaving behind only silence.
The storm quieted. The ground hissed with leftover heat.
Yuki ran to Rai, catching him as he staggered, blood dripping from his nose. “Rai—your body can’t keep doing this!”
He exhaled sharply. “I know. But if I don’t act, the Coexistence field collapses.”
Crow wiped the ash from his face. “There will be more of them. They’re multiplying.”
Yuki nodded grimly. “The Coexistence energy links minds subconsciously—it’s like a hive. Some connections are rebelling against the unity. If they break further...”
“Another apocalypse,” Renji finished.
Rai stood slowly, staring at the horizon. “Then we’ll make sure that doesn’t happen. We’ll stabilize the energy core before the Nullborn infect the network any further.”
—
Later that night, under a crimson-lit sky, Rai and Yuki sat near the remains of an old metro station turned command hub.
Yuki typed rapidly, scanning multiple holographic data streams. “I’ve been looking at the anomalies. The Coexistence Protocol wasn’t just local—it’s syncing with off-world frequencies.”
Rai raised an eyebrow. “Off-world?”
“Yes. The pattern isn’t random—it’s intelligent. Like something else is responding.”
The realization hit him hard. “You’re saying the System wasn’t solely made on Earth.”
Yuki looked up, her voice steady but soft. “Rai, it may never have belonged to us at all.”
The hum of the station deepened. Rai stood, gazing at the night sky, where faint geometric shapes began flickering beyond the stars—structures too symmetrical, too intentional.
The System’s code pulsed softly inside his veins. He could feel it—something vast and cold stirring beyond human understanding.
The world was rebuilding, yes. But something older was watching.
