Chapter 119: Chapter 117: Graen’s Change, the Hope of the Celtic People

Early morning, on a street in the Lower City District of Dawn City.

"Graen! It’s Graen, he’s back!"

"Quick! Quick, go tell Old Chuck."

This was the Commoner housing district for the humans of the Karte Continent.

Here, a row of five stone houses and three shops had been allocated as residences for the survivors from the Mist Forest.

The environment wasn’t great, but it wasn’t too bad either.

At the very least, it was countless times better than the conditions for the tens of thousands of Celtic People enslaved in the Right City District.

Graen was dressed in a suit of Light Armor, his entire bearing brimming with a spirit that was worlds apart from the person he was a year ago.

Seeing Graen arrive, the surrounding people and some children quickly gathered around him.

"Ah! Brother Graen, you haven’t been back in so long! How are things over at the City Lord’s Mansion?"

"I heard they eat Demon Beast Meat every day in the City Lord’s Mansion, and there’s white rice too. Is that true?"

"Shoo, shoo, what does a little rascal like you know? Your Brother Graen is now a Little Guard Captain under the City Lord’s Mansion. Plus, he has a good chance of being appointed as one of the City Lord’s next Knight’s Followers."

"Do you know what a Knight’s Follower is? In the old world, that was practically half-Nobility! They even get their own fiefs."

"..."

All the nearby residents crowded around.

A genuine smile instantly spread across Graen’s face.

He thought back to a year ago.

Back then, they were hiding in caves, living from hand to mouth, unable to even defeat Goblins.

They never had enough to eat or warm clothes to wear and constantly faced the threat of Demons and disease from the forest.

Now, all of that was in the past!

’Dawn City, the great Dragon God, the powerful Lord from another world.’

’Everything is going to be alright.’

As for reclaiming the Karte Continent for the Human Race, that seemed like a wild fantasy to Graen.

The Giant Demons’ power was immense; they even had their own Deities backing them.

Dawn City currently had a population of over four hundred thousand, but it would still be incredibly difficult, even with the addition of their vast number of Demon Beasts.

He knew that over one hundred and fifty years ago, Professionals on the Karte Continent were as common as blades of grass. If there weren’t ten million, there were at least several million.

And among them were countless Strong Persons.

Even with such strength, they were annihilated by the Giant Demon Race.

Now, all of Dawn City had fewer than one hundred Transcendents. Even among the so-called Demon Beasts, fewer than a thousand had reached Entry Tier.

Wanting to reclaim the Karte Continent under these circumstances was nothing but a fool’s dream.

Graen had also been worried for a long time.

If the Giant Demons discovered Dawn City, it would likely lead to a repeat of the tragedy that befell the settlement on the edge of the Mist Forest.

Of course, the one saving grace for Dawn City was that they had a true Deity here, under whose protection they stood. In Graen’s view, as long as the Deities backing the Giant Demon Race didn’t appear, they could still bide their time and plan for the future.

Furthermore, the Teleportation Array to the Otherworld in Dawn City’s Divine Hall was another source of their confidence.

Although Graen didn’t know the full extent of the Power Dawn City could currently muster, he figured that with an entire world backing them, holding off the Giant Demons’ initial attacks shouldn’t be a major problem.

If the great Dragon God could even contact a few more Deities from the Otherworld to come... a counterattack against the Giant Demons wouldn’t be impossible!

However, based on the situation over the past year and news gathered from slaves and Commoners from the Otherworld, this seemed impossible for the time being.

Apparently, the world on the other side was in the middle of a war.

It was a war between several Races, and it seemed the Deities of that world didn’t get along with each other either.

Under such circumstances, all Graen could do was pray.

Of course, these were matters for important figures to consider, or perhaps even the Deities themselves.

Graen was just going with the flow for now.

’I just hope Dawn City can truly bring a new dawn to the despairing Karte Continent.’

For now, all he had to do was his own job.

Besides, given the current situation, Graen’s hopes and expectations for the Dragon God and Dawn City had grown even greater.

Because just a short while ago, after the City Lord had summoned him and given him some instructions, he had immediately rushed back to this residential area for his fellow Celtic People.

"Graen?"

Surrounded by the crowd, Graen arrived at the entrance of a fruit shop.

Just then, an old man appeared in the doorway.

He looked at Graen, his face wreathed in smiles.

"It’s me, Elder Chuck."

Graen strode forward as several soldiers around him immediately dispersed the crowd.

Graen had already reached the old man and was helping to support him.

"Elder, your health is getting worse by the day. Why did you come out? Come on, let’s go inside."

Chuck said happily, "Alright, alright. But seeing you so accomplished now makes me happy too."

"Come, let’s go in. By the way, you must be thirsty from your journey, right?"

"Quick, you two little ones, aren’t you going to pour your Brother Graen some water? What are you standing there for? Do I look like I need your help?"

Chuck looked disapprovingly at the two teenagers behind him.

"Oh, oh, right! Brother Graen, just a moment, we’ll get you some water right away."

The two youths immediately ran inside with sheepish grins.

Watching the two of them, Chuck and Graen shared a smile.

Then, with Graen’s support, the two entered the back room.

Chuck sat on a simple bed, while Graen sat on a stone stool opposite him.

At that moment, Chuck gripped Graen’s hand tightly, his expression kind and gentle as he spoke:

"It must have been hard for you this past year, Graen."

"A few days ago, I heard you followed the City Lord and the great Dragon God to attack a Giant Demon town. I was worried for a long time."

"But it seems everything went smoothly?"

Hearing this, Graen nodded solemnly.

"Yes, everything went according to plan."

"Besides, we barely did anything during the attack on the Giant Demon town."

"By the time our City Defense Army and the City Lord arrived, the Giant Demons had already been wiped out by Lord Amos’s Demon Beast army."

"In the end, all we did was complete a dueling trial against one thousand Giant Demons, all under the watch of His great Majesty."

"A trial?" Chuck was taken aback.

Graen sighed and said, "Yes. His great Majesty probably wanted us new human recruits to see some blood and temper our courage."

"Luckily, the Giant Demons had been stripped of their armor and had lost their nerve from the start. That was the only reason we managed to gain His Majesty’s approval."

"However, the Giant Demons are naturally strong. Even so, we still suffered over five hundred casualties in the end. It’s truly hard to accept."

Hearing Graen’s words, Chuck fell silent for a moment before letting out a soft sigh.

"The Giant Demons surpass us humans in many ways, whether in physique or in their Casters."

"But if the Deities hadn’t vanished, causing the Power of the Underground Cities to wane, we might not have lost the War of the Lost World one hundred and fifty years ago."

"Any Adventurer who could make it out of an Underground City alive, especially those with Black Iron Level strength, was a veteran Warrior tempered by countless battles."

"When it came to combat, the Professionals of the Karte Continent weren’t necessarily weaker than the Giant Demons."

"It’s just a shame that it’s all in the past."

At this point, Chuck looked at the silent Graen and abruptly changed the subject.

"But let’s not dwell on the past. After all, one must look forward."

"By the way, Graen, I saw that you brought back many of our kinsmen when you returned from the war two days ago. What arrangements has the City Lord made for these humans? Are they all to remain slaves?"

Graen heard this and knew what Chuck was thinking, but he could only sigh.

"As for these humans enslaved by the Giant Demons, I think you can guess their condition, Elder Chuck."

"If not as slaves, what else can they do?"

"It will be very difficult to change them. It will take constant guidance, and it will probably take several years to change the mindset ingrained in them by the Giant Demons’ enslavement."

"Besides, most of them are gaunt and severely malnourished. They can’t carry heavy loads or do manual labor. They’re useless even for forced conscription."

"Furthermore, some of our compatriots were domestic servants to the Giant Demons, and their minds have been completely corrupted."

"Under these circumstances, it is already an act of mercy for the City Lord to bring them back and keep them as slaves."

"However, of our compatriots from the Mist Settlement who were enslaved over two years ago, more than three hundred are still alive. The City Lord has now pardoned them and made them Commoners."

Chuck, of course, had anticipated this.

Hearing that the people from the old Mist Settlement had been pardoned brought him a sliver of comfort.

Looking at Graen again, he sighed. "That is for the best."

"It’s just that, deep down, I still feel unwilling to accept this. Reclaiming our world will require many of our own people. The population the Dragon God brought is far from enough."

"However, the Dragon God is from an Otherworld, after all. He must have His own considerations, which are not for us to guess."

"Well, old men tend to ramble. Graen, tell me, is there something you came to see me about?"

At these words, Graen’s expression immediately turned serious.

Without any nonsense, he spoke to the old man, his voice suppressed with excitement:

"Elder, an Underground City has appeared."

"Oh, an Under... What?!"

The old man’s expression went from calm to shocked, and in the next moment, he shot to his feet involuntarily.

Seeing the old man’s agitated expression, Graen, afraid he would get the wrong idea, quickly added:

"An Underground City has appeared, Elder Chuck."

"But it’s not a gift from the Gods. It’s a gift from the Dragon God."

’A gift from the Dragon God?’

’Not the Karte Gods?’

The old man’s expression slowly calmed, but his thoughts were in turmoil.

The Underground Cities were creations of the Gods of the Karte Continent.

’How could a Dragon God from another world possibly grant such a thing?’

The news was too astonishing, and it was inevitable that his mind would race.

Taking a deep breath, Chuck stared intently at Graen and spoke again.

"It seems the City Lord has need of me!"

"Then, let’s go, Graen. I believe nothing would be more direct than for me to speak with the City Lord about this myself."

"Besides, I must see this Underground City with my own eyes!"

"The Dragon God... He... He..."

"Never mind, let’s go! Graen, we must hurry."

"We absolutely cannot keep the City Lord waiting! And I’m sure the City Lord didn’t just summon me. Hade and some of the old-timers we rescued from the Giant Demons must also know about the Underground Cities."

"I can’t fall behind, and I certainly can’t miss the chance to see an Underground City with my own eyes!"

"Hurry, let’s go!"

With that, not giving Graen a moment to think, the elder pulled him along and strode quickly outside.

Graen felt a bit helpless about this.

However, he understood the urgency of the matter, so without another word, he immediately set off to return.
