Global Game: Developing a Knight Clan-Chapter 124 - 121: Decisive Battle of the Western Realm, Life-or-Death Battle of the Dragon Descendant
On the towering, narrow city walls, countless points of light ignited.
In an instant, curtains of light rose from the city walls, one after another.
The curtains of light reached for the sky, stretching at least a thousand meters high.
And so, on the human side of the defenses, a scene visible to the naked eye unfolded: it was as though a colossal galactic waterfall cascaded from the sky.
This waterfall formed a terrifying, impassable Defense Barrier.
A thousand meters in the air, flying along this impassable barrier, the Human Empire’s Flying Cavalry entered the fray.
It was an aerial army, a cavalry corps mounted on Flying Horses.
Alongside this army was another cavalry unit mounted on what looked like Griffins.
With a single glance, Lince saw that these two armies, totaling over ten thousand human soldiers, were composed entirely of warriors who had reached Entry Tier. Some of the leading officers had even broken through to the Middle Tier.
At the same time, behind the two Flying Cavalry units was an army of over three thousand Mages, who appeared to be casting spells to stack enhancement buffs on the cavalrymen.
On and behind the city walls, Lince estimated, the human ground forces numbered no less than half a million.
There was even a continuous stream of human soldiers from all over, waiting in reserve to rotate in.
The war drums thundered, shaking the heavens.
The Demon Beasts roared in fury!
From behind the Red Dragon, the first to fly out was a swarm of locust-like Demon Beasts.
Led by queen-like Demon Beasts from their respective colonies, this swarm of small Demon Beasts blotted out the sky, descending upon the human defensive line from above in a dark, oppressive cloud.
Only then did Lince realize.
The ground of the wasteland below was also covered in a thick layer of small, flying-ant-like Demon Beasts.
At the Red Dragon’s call, these small creatures suddenly took flight, and in that instant, the entire sky above the battlefield seemed to darken.
The sight of this black tide of insects alone was enough to make Lince’s skin crawl.
’The number of insects in this swarm... doesn’t it exceed tens of millions, maybe even close to a hundred million?’
Most of these insects were no bigger than two human fingers, and their combat strength was low. An ordinary person could easily kill dozens of them in a normal encounter.
But a change in quantity can lead to a change in quality.
When their numbers swelled past tens of millions, approaching a hundred million, the scene was truly horrifying.
"A swarm of this size could probably devour every tree in the Swamp Territory’s Wilderness in less than a day, right?"
"And raising so many insects... the cost must be staggering, right?"
Lince mused to himself.
However, the Little Earth Dragon had woken up and heard Lince.
Gazing at the distant swarm under the sky, it immediately muttered:
"It’s just a swarm of insects. Their lifespans are really short, so there’s no way they’re always around."
"Normally, these insects are just food for Low Tier Magical Beasts, so you never see them in such large numbers. We have plenty of Insect-eating Demon Beasts in the Demon Beast Mountain Range, you know."
"So, a swarm of this scale really only appears when we launch a Beast Tide."
"We just order a few Insect Mothers to breed nonstop. A single High Tier Magic Crystal can produce several hundred Entry Tier Insect Mothers. And as long as the Insect Mothers have enough Magic Crystals to eat, a swarm this size can form in just a few days."
’Formed in a few days?’
’A swarm of tens, even hundreds of millions?’
It seemed Lince had underestimated the speed at which the Magic Side World could cultivate insects.
Cannon fodder.
And they certainly lived up to the name.
Just as the swarm launched the first wave of attack, charging the human defensive line from above...
...the next moment, fiery explosions blossomed throughout the dense, dark cloud of insects.
The humans, it seemed, had anti-insect Magic of their own.
A great deal of Magic resembling poisonous smoke, aided by Wind Magic, quickly spread high in the sky. In a mere instant, the insects began dying at an unimaginable rate, falling from the sky like rain.
The swarm’s destructive power was truly limited. In this world, sheer numbers were not enough.
Especially against a coordinated military force, a swarm of this size was merely an appetizer, not a proper attack.
However, using the swarm as cover, a massive number of Flying Demon Beasts had already begun their advance!
Taking advantage of the opening created as the swarm rapidly perished, all the Flying Demon Beasts behind the Red Dragon moved as one!
Led by twelve High Tier Magical Beasts, over a hundred thousand various Tierless Flying Demon Beasts suddenly charged into the swarm.
They plunged straight toward the human defensive line high in the sky.
A Middle Tier Magical Beast burst out from the poisoned swarm, instantly killing three Knights with several Wind Blades.
But a Middle Tier Knight reacted in the next instant, nocking a Flaming Arrow and shooting the Flying Demon Beast down.
But more Demon Beasts were already surging forward!
In an instant, the entire battlefield high in the sky devolved into a chaotic melee.
The army of Mages in the rear continuously cast spells, forming protective barriers around themselves while simultaneously casting wide-area debuffs on the Flying Demon Beasts.
The Mage army had also split into dozens of smaller squads.
They unleashed a dense bombardment on the Demon Beast swarm, using various Magic spells like tempests, Ice Blades, and fireballs.
Meanwhile, on the ground, a vast number of Demon Beasts surged from the line of Mountain Range Earth Dragons, charging toward the humans’ barrier of light.
On the city walls, large numbers of regular and Entry Tier human soldiers continuously used Magic Crossbow Cannons and even Magic to bombard the approaching Beast Tide.
But in the midst of it all, Lince suddenly saw it: just below a section of the city wall on the human side, the earth abruptly cracked open and collapsed.
