Cain believed he had seen a few brutal scenes...

However, none, by far compared to what he was currently bearing witness to.

It was horrid. It was terrible. It felt like a horror induced nightmare.

Seeing the horrified look on his face, Evangeline frowned,

"What do you see?"

Cain was silent for a moment, then he shook his head,

"It’s not pretty."

He paused before adding,

"And I think it’s best not to go up there for now."

They were all curious, but judging by the expression on Cain’s face, they didn’t ask anyore questions.

Instead, they simply stayed there silently.

In the meantime, Cain quietly observed with the Dark Diver.

Indeed, the scene being played out was not pretty. There were organs and viscera blown all over the place, mixed in with bloody pieces of rock.

Blood pooled up in small puddles around the corpses of rather large beasts, and the smaller ones were mangled so badly, it was difficult to tell one apart from the next.

And yet, the battle still raged on. Thousands upon thousands of creatures, beastly and not, continued to fight to the death, indiscriminately slaughtering one another.

Cain frowned, ’A battle of such scale should be much louder. Could there be a barrier blocking out sound?’

He shook his head, ’Not blocking, but dampening...’

His frown deepened. Why would there be a need to hide the sound. What was going on here?

He was confused, but also suspicious.

Something about this whole situation was off.

In the first place, why were all these creatures fighting here in the first place?

His face scrunched up in disgust as he watched a large burly, one-eyed creature wielding a massive wooden club get torn limb from limb, leaving behind a twitching torso.

The creature screamed and begged for mercy in its native tongue, but it received none before it was promptly torn to pieces by the hundred claws of the creature that had pulled off its limbs.

That creature was then immediately gobbled up by an enormous beast that looked all to similar to a dragon, except it didn’t have wings. Blood dripped down the Drake’s maw, and the terrible sound of snapping, breaking bones would have been heard, of not for whatever barrier was dampening the sound of the battle.

And in such manner, the slaughter continued, perfectly indiscriminate and chaotic.

Cain shut his eyes.

’How gruesome...’

A few hours later, the number of participants in the battle had dwindled significantly.

Those who did remain had consumed a ton of stamina and were already on the brink of exhaustion.

Cain’s eyes lit up.

This was a golden opportunity.

"Let’s go!" Cain suddenly said.

Evangeline raised a brow,

"What exactly is going on?"

Cain explained, "A battle. A rather terrible one. But for us, it’s an opportunity."

Susan narrowed her eyes,

"What are you planning?"

Cain grinned,

"It won’t be pretty, but I suggest we go claim the souls that have not been retrieved."

Evangeline’s eyes widened, "That isn’t a bad idea. But don’t you think the circumstances are a bit suspicious?"

Cain shrugged, then nodded,

"They are. But we still have to head up. Our only other option would be to ignore this place entirely and circle around to find a new path up."

Jenny nodded, "I think we don’t need to detour. We can also take advantage of the circumstances."

Susan shook her head,

"Although something could go wrong, I unfortunately agree with you."

Her eyes narrowed, "I don’t think an opportunity like this will present itself again."

***

The battlefield was silent...

Rivers of blood casually flowed down the mountain’s slopes...

The victors were left standing, albeit wounded and exhausted.

The Drake that had eaten the hundred hands abomination, a Griffin, a group of five two-armed humanoids, a lone humanoid wielding a sword, a humanoid, red-skinned female creature seated on a flaming beast wielding an iron whip, and a giantess wearing barely any clothing.

From what he could see, Cain judged that none of them were human. Some looked human enough, like the sword wielding warrior and the female riding up on the flaming lion. However, they weren’t.

There was something fundamentally inhuman about them, just like the difference between trees of different species. All were trees, but they weren’t the same regardless.

For now, none of those left standing made a move to attack the other. Instead, they stood there, clad in blood like crimson robes, waiting for something to happen.

The Drake suddenly snapped its head to the side.

Its voice rumbled like thunder,

"Who is there?! Get out now!"

There was silence as the other victors frowned and clenched the hilt of their weapons harder.

The air rippled like it was a veil being ripped apart.

Then, five humans revealed themselves.

The tense demeanors of the victors immediately softened.

The lone swordsman called out with a raised brow,

"Humans? Where did they come from?"

The woman seated on the flaming beast snorted,

"Does it matter? Hurry up and go kill them."

The swordsman scratched his head,

"Eh? But I’ve killed so much already."

Then he glanced at the four handed humanoids that resembled a mix between a rhinoceros and an ogre.

"Why don’t these guys go do it instead?"

The creatures of the {Horned Brute} race shivered and took a step back when they were addressed by this swordsman. They were clearly disturbed by his presence.

The swordsman raised a brow and smiled. However, there was a trace of cold malice in his smile,

"Didn’t you hear me?"

The swordsman wielding a single slender curved blade that hung at his hip. While he looked human, his body was covered in strange markings. When he opened his mouth, Cain could see sharp fangs as well.

The strangest thing about this swordsman, were his eyes.

His eyes were like clear cut gems. Blue and dazzling...

However, paired with his odd smile, they made him look rather frightening.

The five Horned Brutes shivered in fear. That fear quickly turned into rage as they wildly rushed at them.

Cain couldn’t help but sigh.

This was the best possible scenario to play out.

With a single look, he could tell what was going on. The Horned Brutes were the weakest out of those that had survived. Their survival had been purely by luck.

The other were rather strong. However, the strongest were the Drake, the Griffin, and the Giantess. How much one was stronger than the other was unknown to him, but he could tell that they all possessed the power to easily defeat the {Stone Bloodknight, Collosus}.

Which left the swordsman and the woman seated on the flaming beast. Both were significantly weaker than the Drake, Griffin and Giantess.

However, as far as he was concerned, fighting them was a risk move that could go either way.

Still...

’They are all exhausted.’

Regardless of how powerful they were, they had expended most of their energy in the earlier battle.

The white scales of the Drake had turned crimson due to how much blood it had bathed in, and its hard, nearly impervious scales had been broken in many areas.

The Griffin was bleeding from one of its wings and looked to be in pain, whole the Giantess had covered in many wounds, some deepz some shallow.

It was clear they would have to recover a bit before engaging in any battle.

Compared to them, the swordsman and the woman on the flaming beast hardly seemed to be suffering from any injuries. Still, they didn’t want to battle them just yet. If they engaged in a fight, the other three might take advantage of that to kill them.

They were crafty.

However, their caution also worked well for them. Cain grinned internally...

The feet of the Horned Brutes violently slammed against the blood puddles on the ground, splattering the crimson sludge all over their legs.

They were powerful creatures, with powerful bodies. They were also all but impervious to magical attacks, hexes and illusions.

But how could they compare to a man that had felled a god once?

Cain drew the {Lonely Dragon} Warblade just as the first one arrived before him.

The warblade was huge, but he handle it like it was a blade of grass. The blade cut down faster than the eye could follow, immediately separating the two right hands of the Horned Brute from its torso.

Before the beast could scream, he cut forward again, cutting its head clean off.

A moment later, the rest of the Horned Brutes fell to the ground, gutted and dead, joining the many corpses on this mountain’s edge.

Silence...

Cain met the eyes of the swordsman and smiled,

"Now that’s not a very polite way to greet someone, is it?"

Immediately, hostility bore down on them from all angles.

"I see. So this is a group of special humans. How intriguing..." The swordsman said with a wide grin, his piercing blue eyes glowing with irrespendent radiance.

The red-skinned humanoid female cracked her iron whip and sneered,

"As expected from a group of humans. How insidious."

The Griffin spoke, "They plan to take advantage of our momentarily weakness to steal our bounty."

The Drake growled,

"Wretched creatures. Welcome your death!"

Evangeline shook her head, then sighed. The shadows around her came to life, and an aura of malevolent blossomed around her,

"No one is interested in your bounty." Her eyes narrowed as she asked,

"What the hell happened here?"
