Chapter 37: Chapter 37: Magic Upgrade, Defense Doubled

With Li Wei’s intervention, clearing out the Demon Cave Spiders became incredibly simple.

Once a Demon Cave Spider’s location was found, Li Wei would launch a Fireball from dozens of meters away, sending the spider hiding in its trap into the sky.

On the rare occasion he missed and didn’t kill a Demon Cave Spider, the others could quickly move in to finish off the injured creature.

However, Li Wei’s wish ultimately didn’t come true.

The battle didn’t end until after one in the afternoon.

Not a single Demon Cave Spider could be found in the forest anymore.

Although Li Wei’s participation had greatly lowered the difficulty, everyone still felt utterly exhausted after fighting for so long.

And so, the group began their journey back to Maple City.

Lanya tallied their spoils as they walked. After finishing the count, she said in astonishment, "We killed a total of eighteen Demon Cave Spiders!"

Hearing this, Kunan, Lisa, and Dias were all ecstatic.

Lisa smiled happily. "It’s all thanks to Mage Li Wei!"

Kunan counted on his fingers, exclaiming in delight, "We can get a reward of fifty silver coins for this quest!"

"Even if we split it evenly, each person can still earn more than one gold! I can finally buy a warhorse!"

Dias was also thrilled. "I’m going to get a better blade!" he said.

Lanya smiled, happy to see everyone so excited.

She thought for a moment and said, "The vast majority of the credit for earning so much money on this quest belongs to Mage Li Wei. I suggest we give a portion of the reward to Mage Li Wei as a thank you."

Li Wei shook his head. "There’s no need. The Professional Association will give me my due reward."

His reward would be allocated proportionally by the Professional Association to the Mage Tower, and the Mage Tower would then disburse it to him.

The more money Lanya and the others received, the more Contribution he would earn.

There was no conflict of interest.

Lisa was the first to raise her hand in agreement. "I have no objections! If Mage Li Wei hadn’t helped, we never would have killed so many Demon Cave Spiders, and we wouldn’t be getting such a huge reward!"

Seeing this, Kunan and Dias exchanged a look and had no choice but to say, "I have no objections."

It was already two-thirty in the afternoon by the time they returned to the Professional Association to submit the quest.

After turning in the right fangs of the Demon Cave Spiders as proof of completion, Lanya soon returned with the quest reward.

She took out a Gold Coin and handed it to Li Wei. "Mage Li Wei, this is a small token from our team. Please accept it."

Li Wei smiled and accepted the Gold Coin.

"Captain Lanya, I’ll be taking my leave then. I hope we’ll have a chance to meet again."

"Take care, Mage Li Wei." Lanya, Lisa, Kunan, and Dias bid farewell to Li Wei.

After returning to the Mage Tower, Li Wei submitted the quest to the Magic Butler.

The Magic Butler had already received feedback from the Professional Association, so when Li Wei submitted the quest, it immediately issued his reward.

"Demon Cave Spider extermination quest completed. Quest reward: 3.7 Contribution. Contribution has been issued. Please check your balance."

Li Wei flipped over his Magic Badge. The number on the back had changed to "3.7".

The base quest reward was 1 Contribution, with an additional 2.7 Contribution as a bonus.

Adding the one Gold Coin from Lanya.

On this trip, Li Wei had earned 4.7 Gold Coins in total.

Li Wei revealed a satisfied expression.

’Spending a morning on this quest wasn’t a waste at all.’

However, such quests weren’t common. Most quests had one or a few fixed objectives, and completing them only earned the base reward, with little to no bonus.

He could only say that he had gotten lucky.

Li Wei was well aware of this.

Most quest rewards were fixed; quests like clearing out Demon Cave Spiders, where the reward was calculated based on quantity, were rare.

Therefore, he didn’t plan to spend more time doing quests.

After eating lunch and resting for a while,

Li Wei seized the time to cultivate his Mana, practice his Magic, and improve his strength.

The shadow of war was imminent!

For the next few days, Li Wei stayed in the Mage Tower, focusing on his Cultivation.

He would occasionally check to see if there were any suitable quests for him.

No one can escape the law of sweet temptation!

Most quests that required a Mage’s assistance were rather special.

Li Wei’s requirements were that the quest not take him too far from the city, and ideally, be solvable within a single day.

Where could one find so many special quests that met his requirements near Maple City? As a result, Li Wei went a long time without finding a suitable one.

「In the blink of an eye, more than half a month had passed.」

April 20th.

After two months of painstaking grinding, Li Wei had finally leveled up his Invisible Armor Skill.

[Basic Meditation Method (Great Success)] 3362/4000

[Small Fireball Technique (Tier Zero Small Success)] 366/4000

[Invisible Armor Skill (Tier Zero Small Success)] 0/4000

Li Wei dispelled the Invisible Armor Skill on himself.

He consumed double the Mana to construct a new Magic Model, and a much sturdier suit of Invisible Armor enveloped his entire body.

The Invisible Armor Skill’s Defense Power had doubled!

The Defense Power of the Invisible Armor was now approaching the limit for Tier Zero Magic.

It could easily block attacks from Tier One Middle and Low Level Professionals, and even a Tier One Magic spell couldn’t easily break through the Invisible Armor’s defense.

The formidable Defense Power of the Invisible Armor had already been proven in actual combat.

Even when ambushed by a Demon Cave Spider, a Tier One Low Level spider was completely unable to break through the Invisible Armor.

Now, the Invisible Armor’s Defense Power had reached an even higher level.

Withstanding the attack of a Tier One Middle Level Magic Beast would not be difficult.

This Defense Power was no worse than a Tier One Magic Shield cast by an ordinary Mage.

For most Mages, it was already a rare achievement to cultivate a Magic spell to the level of proficiency.

Mages who cultivated a Magic spell to Small Success were even fewer and farther between.

Gu Ze had been an Apprentice Mage for over five years, and he had only mastered a single Small Success Level Ice Arrow Skill.

Mastering a Small Success Level spell meant that a Mage had a profound understanding of its Magic Model and could modify, add, or remove parts of its structure, thereby creating their own unique spell.

Gu Ze created the Triple Ice Arrow Technique!

Li Wei created a triple-power Small Fireball Technique! And an Invisible Armor Skill with double the Defense Power!

It was called creation, but in reality, it was modification.

Only with an even deeper understanding of Magic could one truly "create" a spell of their own.

Li Wei was working hard toward this goal.

"DING! You have a new message. Please check it."

A notification sound came from his Magic Badge.

Li Wei shifted his gaze, and the text in front of him dissipated.

He picked up the Magic Badge to check.

"New Quest—Hunt down the Yubis Sect Black Cultist."

A short while later, a Magic Servant delivered a Task Scroll to his door.

Li Wei took the Task Scroll and read the quest details.

"A Black Cultist from the Yubis Sect has fled to Maple City. According to the Punishment Knight hunting the cultist, this individual is extremely wicked, has performed multiple Blood Sacrifices to an Evil God, has obtained a sliver of the Power of the Evil God, and has killed several official Tier One Professionals."

"According to intel from the Assassin Association, the Black Cultist may be hiding in the sewers of Maple City."

"The Professional Association has recently received multiple reports of missing persons and suspects that the fugitive Black Cultist is attempting to conduct a sacrificial ritual. We hope to receive assistance from the Mage Tower to promptly deal with the Yubis Sect Black Cultist hiding within Maple City."

After reading it, Li Wei decisively gave up on the idea.

The reward for this quest was generous, with a base reward of 5 Contribution.

But it was too dangerous!

The fact that the Black Cultist had killed several Tier One Professionals proved that their strength was not to be underestimated.

Li Wei had no desire to get involved in this mess.

He didn’t accept the quest. A few minutes later, the Magic Butler informed him that the quest had been taken by someone else, and he could no longer accept it.

Li Wei felt no regret.
