Chapter 37: Class 1D

"The Spirit Caster’s Academy, here I come."

Mason made his way into the buzzing streets of the lower faction of Metro City, and after minutes of walking, he found himself in the upper faction and not long after, he found himself at the entrance of the Spirit Caster’s Academy.

The Spirit Caster’s Academy stood high on the hill of Metro City’s upper faction, where the streets were cleaner and the air felt a little lighter. It was a wide, stone-built institution with tall windows and banners that fluttered quietly in the wind.

At the front of the academy was a separate building. That building was used only for examination purposes. Students walked in with nervous faces and walked out with either relief or heavy silence. No one trained there. No one lived there. It existed for one purpose, to test anyone who dared to call themselves a future Spirit Caster. And up until a day ago, it was used to recruit new casters.

The academy’s bell rang somewhere in the distance. It was a slow and steady sound that reminded every student that the day had begun.

Mason walked into the exam building, and he felt a bit nervous the moment he stepped through the doors.

A security guard at the front pointed him down a hallway, he knew instantly just by his demeanor and lack of direction that he was new, and Mason followed without asking questions.

Another guard met him near the corner and directed him up a short staircase.

At the top of the stairs, a third guard gave him a simple gesture toward a door at the end of the hall. Mason nodded, walked straight ahead, and stopped in front of it. He took a small breath, pushed the door open, and entered the debriefing hall.

As he entered, all eyes fell on him immediately.

Murmurs arose almost immediately as the piercing gaze of the students met his. It was obvious, these kids were citizens of the upper faction, kids raised and spoilt to the extent that they considered kids from the lower faction nothing more but commoners.

But it didn’t matter to Mason, in fact, he had a smug smile on. After all, he had one of the children of the nobles wrapped around his fingers.

"Ahem." A single voice disrupted the murmurs, and all eyes turned to the stage, only to find a man, dressed in a sleek black suit, and the symbol of the Yin and Yang clipped to his breast pocket.

"If you are here, if you are present in this hall as of this moment, then you have been successful evaluated and have gained admission into the most prestigious academy in all of Metro City. Here in the Spirit Caster’s Academy, the spiritual arts aren’t just a weapon against the beasts that threatens humanity, but a tool that will save humanity. So give your hearts, give your soul, and fight till you can’t any more. You have all been designated to the classes based on your performance, that will be all."

The man’s speech was short and brief, he didn’t need to say much. But they all understood, to survive in an environment that birted most of the legendary Spirit Casters in all of Metro City, they had to fight for the number one spot.

When the man finished his speech, the crowd slowly began to break apart with each new student heading toward the classes they had been assigned.

Mason gulped, he knew the class he was assigned to.

Class 1D.

He left the debriefing hall, following the signs on the walls and making his way towards his designated class.

The academy’s hallways were wide and clean, but the more Mason walked, the more quiet it became.

Finally, he reached a simple door with a faded plate that read CLASS 1D. There were no crowds here, no noise, just a few students numbered up to fifteen walking in with tired faces or lowered eyes. Mason pushed the door open and stepped inside. 𝑓𝘳𝘦𝑒𝑤𝑒𝘣𝘯ℴ𝘷𝘦𝓁.𝑐𝑜𝑚

Class 1D was small compared to the others. The lights were a bit dimmer, and the desks looked older, as if they had been used for years before being moved here. Only a handful of students sat inside, each one looking like they carried their own quiet worries.

Class 1D

It was the lowest class in the academy, the place for students whose abilities didn’t shine as brightly as the others, the ones who couldn’t match the talent found in the upper ranks.

Some said Class 1D was where the academy put students they didn’t expect much from. Others said it was where people went when their spirits, techniques, or potential simply paled in comparison to the rest of the school. Mason didn’t know which was true, but he had no idea why this was even considered given his performance in the first stage.

"Shit!" One of the students slammed his fist into his table hard, and gritted his teeth. "Why... Why was I sent to class 1d!?"

He found it absurd that this was the result of his evaluation, and that wasn’t even what pissed him off the most. His angered gaze immediately landed on Mason, the commoner from the lower faction.

"Why was I put in the same class as this commoner!?" That was probably what pissed him off the most, it was bad enough that the academy put him in Class 1d.

But deciding he was in the same league as someone from the lower faction?

"Unacceptable!"

Mason sighed. The reason for him being here was obvious, but him?

"Instead of blaming him for your misfortune, don’t be a fool and ask yourself why you were put in class 1d."

A voice said from behind them, firm enough to cut through the room. Every student turned almost at the same time, curious to see who had spoken, and Mason turned with them.

When his eyes landed on the person who had spoken in his defense, and he froze for a moment.

His eyes slowly widened, and he was shocked beyond belief.

"L—Lady Kaori?"
