He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 164: She Doesn’t Know How to Get Along With a Fool
"Officer, why would I be carrying those things around with me? I’ll show them to you once I get home."
As she spoke, Bertha reached for the man’s hand.
The man sat perfectly still, and she couldn’t budge him. So she started raining blows on him.
Momo couldn’t stand to watch. He threw himself at Bertha with all his might, only to be knocked back.
"You’re a bad woman! Don’t you hit my Mr. Grant!"
"You little brat..." Bertha raised her hand to strike Momo, but it was seized in mid-air.
She stared at the man in front of her, her eyes wide with astonishment. Before she could utter a curse, a powerful force shoved her away.
She stumbled back and fell flat on her rear.
"So that’s how it is, River! I saved your life, and this is how you repay me? You’re no good! You’re biting the hand that fed you!"
Bertha sat on the ground and began to wail.
The police officer frowned as he watched.
He looked at the tall man, pointed at Bertha, and asked, "Is she your wife?"
The man shook his head.
Bertha’s wails grew louder.
Since they weren’t related, there was no reason for the officer to stay.
After a few more words, he left with Bertha.
Momo threw himself into the man’s arms. "Mr. Grant, even though you’re sick, don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you."
The little boy’s words instantly melted the man’s heart.
He grinned foolishly, scooped up the little boy, and spun him around and around.
Natalie Morgan was left speechless.
’What in the world is going on?’
’That woman just said she saved this simpleton’s life.’
’Does that indirectly prove he’s Theodore Grant?’
’It’s just as he once told her: aside from identical twins, no two people in this world look exactly alike.’
The rain never stopped.
And the man never left.
Every day, he played all sorts of games with Momo, letting the boy ride on his back like a horse. Momo was having the time of his life.
When the rain finally stopped and the sun came out, Momo didn’t want to go to kindergarten.
He just wanted to stay home and play with his Mr. Grant.
"You have to go to kindergarten today. Mommy has to go to work, too. Understand?" Natalie Morgan told Momo, her expression stern.
Momo glanced at the man, crestfallen. "But what about Mr. Grant? Who will take care of him?"
"Mommy will figure something out."
"Oh."
The little boy was reluctant to leave. He waved to the man as he walked out the door. "Mr. Grant, I’ll play with you again when I get back from school! Be good while I’m gone, okay? Be as good as Momo!"
The man smiled vacantly and mimicked the little boy, waving back.
After dropping Momo off at kindergarten, Natalie Morgan went to work.
She was distracted all day, wondering what to do about the man in her house.
She had been secretly observing him for the past few days.
The scar from a knife wound on his abdomen was definitely there. That, along with everything else, proved he was Theodore Grant.
But his simple-mindedness wasn’t an act.
He had truly become a simpleton.
He didn’t recognize her or Momo.
She didn’t know how to interact with a simpleton.
’Send him back to the Grant family?’
’He probably doesn’t remember anyone from the Grant family, either.’
Ethan Yates walked over, rapping his knuckles on her desk. He smiled. "Daydreaming, Ms. Childs?"
"Can I help you?" She pulled her gaze away and looked at him.
"I went to the construction site yesterday and heard a few things... Is that simpleton... at your house right now?"
Natalie Morgan didn’t know why Ethan Yates was asking about this.
’Considering Bertha’s personality,’ she thought, ’she’s probably spread the news all over town.’
"He is... staying at my place," she admitted, unable to deny it.
Ethan Yates hadn’t expected her to admit it so readily, which only deepened his confusion. "How can you let a simpleton stay in your house? Have you forgotten that he attacked you? People like him are emotionally unstable. It’s too dangerous."
"I haven’t figured out where to send him yet."
’In any case, sending him back to Bertha is out of the question,’ she thought. ’If worse comes to worst, I’ll just send Theodore Grant to Thomas Morgan’s hospital. He can be a patient there.’
Ethan Yates suggested almost without hesitation, "Why don’t you send him to my place? We’re both men, so it would be easier for him to stay with me than with you."
Natalie Morgan didn’t give it much thought.
But she didn’t want to be a bother to anyone.
"He gets along quite well with my son, so I won’t trouble you."
"It’s no trouble at all. He’s the prototype for a character I’m writing; I think he could be a great help to me." Ethan Yates seemed a bit too eager for Natalie Morgan to agree. "If he isn’t comfortable at my place, I can always bring him back here. Besides, you know as well as I do that as long as he’s here, Bertha will keep coming around to cause trouble for you."
Ethan Yates had a point.
Even though Theodore Grant was a simpleton now, he was still inextricably linked to her.
He didn’t even have any identification right now; she couldn’t just let him go off to a stranger’s house.
If something bad were to happen, the consequences would be unthinkable.
She wouldn’t feel at ease sending him anywhere. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
"Never mind, I’ll just have him stay with me," Natalie Morgan refused tactfully.
Ethan Yates smiled faintly and didn’t press the issue. "Well, if you need my help with anything—say, with things that might be awkward for you, like getting him to bathe—you can call me. I’m happy to help."
"Thank you, Mr. Yates."
"Don’t mention it."
「A few days passed.」
Life was relatively peaceful.
The first thing Momo did every day after coming home from kindergarten was share everything that had happened with Theodore Grant.
Though he couldn’t understand the words, he was a good listener who provided emotional support.
Ever since he’d arrived, Natalie Morgan hadn’t heard him speak a single word.
’He can’t be mute, can he?’
Regardless, she decided she should take him to the hospital for a check-up.
If it could be treated, they would treat it. If not... well, being a simpleton like this was fine, too. At least he seemed innocent and harmless.
One weekend, Natalie Morgan drove Theodore Grant to the hospital.
She wasn’t sure if he was afraid of hospitals, so she spent the whole drive trying to mentally prepare him.
"We’re just going to see a doctor, just like when you have a cold or a fever. The worst that could happen is you get a little shot. Don’t be afraid, okay?"
The man in the back seat wasn’t paying any attention to what Natalie Morgan was saying.
His hands were busy fiddling with the Ultraman action figure Momo had given him.
Natalie Morgan pressed her lips together, exasperated.
After they got out of the car, the man clung tightly to her arm.
He followed her step for step.
"Don’t be afraid. This is a hospital. It’s a place that helps people get better. In a little bit, we’ll go register and let a doctor give you a proper check-up."
Natalie Morgan coaxed him in a soft, gentle voice.
It was just like how she cared for Momo.
She was so focused on him that she was completely unaware of the danger lurking behind her.
Hiding in the shadows, Bertha gripped a heavy hammer, raised it furiously over her head, and brought it crashing down toward the back of Natalie Morgan’s skull.
Her eyes blazed with desperate, crazed fury.
"You stole my man! Go to hell!"
The shriek, sharp and piercing, caught the attention of the man trailing behind Natalie Morgan.
Without a moment’s hesitation, the man shielded her slender frame with his own solid back.
The heavy hammer fell, missing its intended target but striking the back of the man’s head with a sickening, dull thud.
As the sound of metal cracking against bone echoed, the man let out an agonized cry. His eyes fluttered wildly before he collapsed, stiff as a board, to the ground.
Natalie Morgan froze, stunned by the scene unfolding before her.
Only then did she notice the crazed Bertha and the weapon in her hand.
The sight of the unconscious man and the rapidly growing pool of blood on the ground sent a wave of panic and terror boiling through her.
"Help! She tried to kill him!"
"Help! Doctor, please, help!"
"Somebody, help us!"
