He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 99: A Grope and a Kiss Are Commonplace
"Have you forgotten that you still owe me money? Natalie Morgan, when you’ve paid me back, then you can come talk to me about a divorce. Maybe then..."
Maybe then, he would let her go.
Natalie Morgan was utterly disappointed.
’He still isn’t willing to let me go, after all.’
’He’s only saying this because he’s certain I can’t come up with the two million right away.’
"If I could give you two million right now, would you divorce me and let me go?" Just like before, she didn’t want anything but her freedom. "Would you?"
He didn’t speak.
Natalie Morgan let out a soft laugh.
’His silence proved it. His promise just now was a lie.’
’Even if I paid him back, if he didn’t want to let me go, he wouldn’t.’
"Then I have to ask, where would you get two million?"
Natalie Morgan met his eyes directly. "Does it matter? As long as I pay you back, that’s all that counts."
"By that logic, if I don’t let you go, it’ll make it seem like I can’t live without you." His gaze was cold, almost heartless. "Principal plus interest, I’ll take three million. The day you pay it off is the day I’ll write up the divorce agreement."
Natalie Morgan’s eyes shot up.
’He agreed to let me go?’
"I’ll do it as soon as I can," she said.
He laughed, a mocking sound. "Then I’ll just have to see how the ever-resourceful Mrs. Grant manages to raise these three million."
They parted on a sour note once again.
As the door slammed heavily shut, Natalie Morgan’s heart remained surprisingly calm.
Three million. She certainly didn’t have it.
But she could borrow it. If she couldn’t borrow it, she would sell her house, sell everything she possibly could.
That included herself.
She moved from the hospital back to the Grant Residence.
Her relationship with Theodore Grant seemed to be the same as before.
He would still visit Wanda Lynch every few days, but he would also come home for dinner and sleep with her.
The internet was plastered with photos and design layouts from the engagement party.
It was as if he wanted to announce his love to the entire world.
The more she saw, the more bitter Natalie Morgan felt.
She felt pathetic.
She and Theodore Grant had never had an engagement party. They had just spent ten minutes getting a marriage certificate.
They didn’t even have a wedding ceremony, let alone a so-called engagement party.
People often say you can tell if someone loves you by the details.
In the way Theodore Grant doted on Wanda Lynch, she finally understood what love was supposed to look like.
And she was just a clown.
「...」
Serena Sutton called her, and the two arranged to meet.
"Here’s a million." Serena Sutton handed Natalie Morgan a bank card. "I’ll try to scrape together some more. Don’t worry."
’A million?’
Natalie Morgan’s brows knitted with confusion and unease. "Where did you get a million?"
"I mortgaged the house my mom left me," she said casually.
"Claire... For you to do this, it makes me..." Natalie Morgan was heartbroken, her feelings a complicated mess.
A faint smile touched Serena Sutton’s lips. "I mortgaged it, I didn’t sell it. I can always buy it back when I have the money."
Natalie Morgan really didn’t want her own problems to become such a huge burden to Serena Sutton.
She didn’t take it. "I can’t accept this money."
"You’re not taking it for free. I’m going to charge you interest." Serena Sutton pressed the card into Natalie Morgan’s hand. "I’m lending it to you, not giving it to you. Don’t overthink it."
She smiled.
But a bitter pang shot through Natalie Morgan’s heart. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ𝑤𝑒𝑏𝑛𝘰𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝒸𝑜𝘮
Even if Serena Sutton lent her a million, she was still two million short.
And it wasn’t like she could pay back Serena Sutton’s million anytime soon.
She needed a way to make money fast.
After parting with Serena Sutton, Natalie Morgan went to a high-end nightclub in Riverden.
There was someone there named Maya Sutton.
Natalie Morgan’s high school classmate.
Back in their senior year, while everyone was cramming for the college entrance exams, she had already given up on college to become a dancer.
Afterward, whenever people talked about her, it was always with looks of contempt and ridicule.
"Natalie Morgan?" Maya Sutton was dressed quite respectably, probably because it wasn’t showtime yet. Her eyes were wide with astonishment. "You... what are you doing here?"
Natalie Morgan didn’t beat around the bush. "Maya Sutton, I came here to find you."
"Me?" Maya Sutton crossed her arms, looking Natalie Morgan up and down. After a moment, she stepped aside from the doorway. "Come in and talk."
Natalie Morgan explained her reason for coming.
For a long moment, Maya Sutton couldn’t process it.
The woman in front of her had been a top student since childhood, a golden girl who got into a top university with outstanding grades.
No matter how you looked at it, she shouldn’t have ended up in such a miserable state.
"You... are you in some kind of trouble?"
Natalie Morgan nodded lightly, every movement heavy with worry. "I owe someone money, so... I was hoping to... ask for a job."
"Don’t you have a job?" Maya Sutton was a little surprised.
"I want to work at night... as a part-time job, I guess. Can you... help me?" Natalie Morgan bit her lip.
She had asked around about Maya Sutton and knew she had already become the head manager here. Getting someone a position shouldn’t be too difficult.
It all depended on whether Maya Sutton was willing to help her.
Maya Sutton took out a cigarette and put it to her lips. Her beautiful, almond-shaped eyes studied Natalie Morgan as she said in a low voice, "You can’t do this kind of work."
"I can dance. I have the foundation." She had been talented in many arts since she was a child. In college, she even taught herself jazz and folk dance. "I can do it."
"I’m not saying you can’t dance. I’m saying..." Maya Sutton lowered her head to light her cigarette, took a drag, and slowly exhaled a plume of smoke, her brows furrowed. "...this kind of environment, with all its shady characters, isn’t suitable for an innocent little flower like you."
"There’s no such thing as an environment you can’t adapt to, only people who can’t adapt. I can do it."
Natalie Morgan had never been so determined.
Maya Sutton had been out in the world since she was eighteen. She knew better than anyone that a woman wouldn’t want to show her face in a place like this unless she was absolutely desperate.
Seeing the scars on Natalie Morgan’s wrists only confirmed her suspicion.
"Are you sure?"
Natalie Morgan nodded. "I’m sure."
"Alright. We were classmates, so I don’t want you to think I’m heartless. I can give you a spot, but Natalie Morgan, you need to know, this job pays well, but it demands a lot in return. A customer grabbing you, giving you a kiss... that’s all commonplace. Can you handle that?"
Maya Sutton wanted to lay out the ugly truth upfront.
The profession of a dancer was at the very bottom of society, looked down upon and treated with contempt.
In the eyes of men, they were just playthings for amusement, with no dignity or value.
Their bodies were casually gawked at, to be toyed with at will.
That’s what it meant to be a plaything.
"As long as I don’t have to sleep with them, everything else... is fine." This was Natalie Morgan’s bottom line.
Maya Sutton chuckled softly and stubbed out her cigarette. "In that case, I’ll take you on. Come by this weekend, and I’ll personally teach you some of the rules and tricks. You can start Monday night. Any problem with that?"
"No problem. I’ll be on time."
By day, Natalie Morgan was the deputy supervisor of the Grant Group’s design department—a diligent, top professional.
By night, she transformed into a mysterious Indian dancer, weaving her way among all sorts of men.
Her dancing was graceful and passionate, possessing an indescribable magic that made the men scream for more, unable to tear themselves away.
The air was thick with greedy desire, the stink of cash, and a decadent, hedonistic glamour.
"Mr. Grant, you’ve never been to a place like this, so you don’t know its... unique charms."
Holding the business dinner in such a seedy place.
Theodore Grant was already displeased.
However, the other party was an old client who had been working with the Grant Group for over a decade, so he couldn’t really object.
"It seems President Brooks is quite a regular here."
"Mr. Grant, you’re in for a real treat. They’ve got a new face here recently. Her waist is just... so supple and slender, and don’t even get me started on her looks. You’ll see in a bit." President Brooks could hardly wait.
As he spoke, a few colorfully dressed dancers walked into the VIP room.
