HEIRESS REBORN: MARRYING HER EX-FIANCÉ-Chapter 98: Lucinda’s suspicions
*Days after*
’’Have you reached out to her our son yet, Lucinda?"
Lucinda’s fingers flinched at her husband’s question while they were eating breakfast in the dining room.
She did not answer the question immediately and took her time to slice through the salmon on the plate.
’’No, I haven’t.’’ Lucinda replied after chewing her food. Though her countenance seemed calm and composed, only she knew how agitated her mind was, especially with the mention of her son.
’’Why haven’t you?’’ As expected, her husband frowned at her reply. ’’I specifically told you to reach out to him and ask him out on a family dinner. We can’t have the public laughing at us for not knowing the health of our son.’’
’’...The public?’’ Lucinda laughed mockingly at his words. ’’By the public, Mark, do you mean the families that attended my birthday banquet or Arabella’s fans watching us on social media?’’
’’What are you trying to say?" Mark did not like the mocking look from his wife.
’’No one is a fool, Mark.’’ Lucinda did not look at her husband and was direct with her words. ’’They all can see through the disguise we put up for them as a perfect family.’’ She acted as though cutting through the salmon was more important.
This was one bad habit about her husband. Apart from his overly-suspicious nature, he tends to be arrogant, thinking that everyone was a fool and dumber than him.
However, these people, particularly the ones in similar standings and families like the Kingston family, obviously could see through their ploy. It was very clear to them that the first young master kingston was not close to his own family.
Rather than stirring up more displeasure from their son, shouldn’t they give him more space? After all, they were the ones who had abandoned him right from the start.
Their son had gone to find his family and happiness. As his true blood, the last thing they could do as parents was to allow him live his life.
However....her husband would never understand. His goals were far important than the state of their family.
Mark stared at his wife for a moment before dropping his cutlery, purposely making the clank-sound on the plate.
’’Are you done speaking now?’’ He completely lost his appetite from her words and wiped his lips with the napkin.
’’...’’
’’Before the end of the week, you must see our son and ask him to come home for a family dinner.’’ He dropped the napkin on the dining table and stared at his wife, eating her meal. ’’As the first young master of kingston family, it is not advisable for him to be distant from his own family.’’ After saying those words, Mark rose up from his seat.
’’...’’
’’You should not be worried about the public’s opinions.’’ His gaze flicked to Lucinda. ’’The staffs were smart to turn off the livestream before the daughter you raised could embarrass the family any further by not recognizing her own elder brother.’’
’’Father!’’ On the side of Lucinda, Arabella looked up at her father in disbelief. She did not expect her father to say such words.
How could he blame her for this? It wasn’t her fault that she had forgotten the face of her elder brother. He had changed so much from the sickly elder brother forever on that wheelchair.
’’You have been quiet all these years, Arabella.’’ Mark stared pointedly at his daughter who knew nothing but to cause trouble and humiliate his face.
’’Don’t cause any trouble for your mother and I to clean up after you and put in more efforts on becoming recognized as a global actress.’’ He gave a serious warning. ’’You should also thank your cousin for being quite understanding.’’
’’Father!’’
’’I’ll be home late.’’ He glanced at his quiet wife who unexpectedly did not stand up for their daughter. ’’Don’t wait up for me.’’ Mark left the dining room, deliberately ignoring his daughter’s calls.
’’Father!’’
’’It’s not even my fault, father!’’ Arabella did not like how her father blamed her more for something out of her own control.
And she should be thankful to an orphan? For what, being understanding? Why should she, the Arabella Kingston, be thankful to that orphaned cousin of hers?
’’Mother, how could father talk to me like that? It isn’t my fault that I could not recognize elder brother! Why should I be thankful to that orphan?!’’ She immediately dropped her cutlery and turned to her mother for consolation.
’’...’’
’’That orphan was the one who did not mention anything to us. Elder brother too. Why didn’t he reach out to us when his illness was cured? Father shouldn’t blame me but them!’’ The more Arabella remembered her humiliation in that birthday banquet, the angrier she became.
Like her father said, if not the quick-thinking of the staffs, her reputation as an actress might be in trouble by now. Although, some fans caught onto Noah’s appearance, and her shock, her manager was able to suppress any news and articles on social media concerning the birthday banquet afterwards.
’’.....’’ In response to her daughter’s anger, Lucinda only ate half-full with a lost appetite and sipped in water from the glass cup. She stared at the remaining clear water, her expression unreadable before placing down the glass cup.
’’....You’re right, Bella.’’ She faintly smiled at her riled-up daughter. ’’It’s not your fault that you couldn’t recognize Noah.’’
It’s her husband’s fault and that girl’s cunningness, her late younger sister-in-law’s daughter.
’’But father....’’
’’Your father is just busy and misunderstood you Bella.’’ Lucinda caressed her daughter’s wavy hair with a soft gaze. ’’You’re his only daughter. There’s no way he would be angry with you forever.’’
’’But....’’
’’Once he returns, I’ll talk to him.’’ Lucinda did not allow her daughter to speak anymore and stood up from the dining chair. ’’For now, don’t do look for your cousin and your elder brother. As your father said, focus on being more recognized as a global actress.’’
’’.....’’
’’Arabella.’’ Lucinda’s voice firmed up when she heard no reply from her daughter.
’’...Yes mother.’’ Arabella reluctantly accepted her mother’s words. But that did not mean she would be grateful to her cousin for standing up for her against that troublesome Madam Hitson.
’’Thank you, Arabella.’’ Lucinda smiled warmly, glad that her daughter was obedient to her.
’’Then what of elder brother? When do we meet with him?’’ Arabella asked curiously.
For her, meeting with her elder brother did not change anything between them. He had always been a stranger to her from their childhood. When he decided to take those orphans under his wing, he became an enemy to her as long as he sided with those orphans against his own family.
’’....I’ll personally meet with your elder brother.’’ After a thought, Lucinda declared. ’’There’s no need for to be concerned about that.’’
’’Okay, mother.’’
’’Then, I’ll leave to check if your father’s still around and see him out.’’
’’Hmm.’’
Lucinda smiled one last time at her daughter before turning away and leaving the dining room. As soon as she stepped out, her smile dropped and her face changed to an unreadable one.
’’Where’s the Eldest master?" She glanced at the housekeeper respectfully waiting for her.
’’The Eldest master has left, madam.’’
’’Did he leave any parting words?’’
’’Not that I know of, madam.’’
’’....I see.’’ Lucinda did not have more questions for the housekeeper, but her eyes flashed slightly with some thoughts.
There was no issue if her husband left early for work, but the fact he recently started coming home late....
Lucinda bit her lower lips as a predictable conjecture formed in her mind.
’He couldn’t be....’
