Chapter 61: The Language of Nobles

The necklace, for all its incredible power—so remarkable that it felt wrong to even call it a "flaw"—couldn’t translate written text. It was perfect for conversations, but the moment Damien tried to read anything, the letters remained as incomprehensible symbols, whether or not he was wearing the necklace.

To make sure, he had Theo give it a try, but even Theo couldn’t make sense of the writing.

"Looks like we’ll have to learn the script from scratch," Damien sighed.

"Yes, it seems that way," Theo replied. "But for now, you’ll need to help me translate the textbooks bit by bit."

Compared to Damien, who was clearly disappointed, Theo didn’t seem too bothered. He settled back into Damien’s lap, casually lying down again.

"Well, I kind of expected this outcome when I realized it couldn’t help with deciphering ancient manuscripts," Theo admitted.

Ah, that made sense.

Suddenly, Theo’s face lit up as if a new idea struck him.

"Oh! What if you helped us decipher the books left behind by the other Earthians in the church archives? Now that I think about it, the script might be similar to what you’re familiar with!"

That made sense. If other Earthian had left behind writings, there could be some in Earthian rather than the local language.

"Sure, I don’t know if I’ll be able to help much, but I’ll try. Just keep in mind that if it’s written by ancient earthian, I might not be able to read it either," Damien warned, thinking of how even some historical texts from his world looked like scribbles to modern readers.

He’d seen historians on TV specializing in ancient writings, so he felt unsure about how much he could really contribute. Still, if it would help Theo, he was willing to try.

...

"Master Damien, Sir Damien, it’s almost time for dinner. Shall we wrap things up for today?" Sebas asked, interrupting their somewhat casual conversation.

"Yes, let’s call it a day," Theo agreed.

"Are you sure? Did we get through everything planned?" Damien asked, feeling uncertain. He had struggled with some of the explanations and wasn’t sure if they had fallen behind.

"We managed to finish not only today’s plan but also some of what was scheduled for the coming days," Theo replied with a smile.

Wait, they got that far?

"Well, more like... we realized the sheer amount of information is so vast that it’ll take time, and we’ll need to take things slowly," Theo added with a bit of a sheepish smile.

Damien couldn’t help but feel bad. If he had been smarter, maybe it wouldn’t have taken so long.

"Oh no, don’t make that face, Damien!" Theo said hurriedly. "You’ve been a big help. Thanks to you, I can confidently apply for an extension to our research period!"

Theo’s words were genuine—no misty lies floating from his mouth—and Damien felt a bit of relief knowing he had helped.

"Anyway... since I worked so hard today and we’ve freed up some time for tomorrow..."

Suddenly, Theo flipped over from his lap-pillow position, pressing his face into Damien’s groin, rubbing it back and forth playfully.

"T-Theo?" Damien stammered.

"Goo reeward pleease," Theo mumbled, his voice muffled by Damien’s lap, but the meaning was clear.

Well... he had promised a reward. As Damien gently patted Theo’s head, he felt Theo nudging his face further against him. He instinctively spread his legs a bit, giving Theo more space as the pressure in his groin began to grow.

Just as Theo started to use his mouth over Damien’s pajama-covered crotch, a voice suddenly called out.

"Master Theo, Sir Damien."

Both of them jumped in shock, startled nearly out of their skins.

Sebas! Damien had completely forgotten he was still around after he’d spoken earlier.

"You may continue after dinner," Sebas said calmly.

"Sorry..." Damien muttered, mortified.

As Damien and Theo sat next to each other at the large table in the lounge, enjoying their dinner, Damien decided to ask a question that had been on his mind.

"So, Theo, your research on the Earthian—is that part of your job? I always thought nobles only dealt with managing their estates, but I guess it’s not like that?"

The two of them were having dinner, served by Sebas, just like usual. This time, Damien had received permission from the doctor to eat something other than risotto, so he was finally able to enjoy a more varied meal. Tonight’s dinner was the same as Theo’s—a fancy dish featuring grilled poultry. While the flavor wasn’t quite like the chicken he knew, it was delicious in its own right.

"Yes, that’s correct," Theo replied. Then, remembering something, he added, "Oh, right, the people on Earth no longer has nobles, does it?"

During one of their earlier sessions, Damien hadp explained the structure of modern Earth society to Theo, including the fact that the concept of nobility no longer existed on Earth. Damien, nodding as he munched on a salad—which, though slightly unusual in taste, was still quite tasty—listened as Theo continued.

"As you said, the primary duty of a noble is to manage their estate. However, most of the actual work is handled by deputies, so in peaceful times, there’s not much day-to-day work for a noble to do."

Damien thought about it. Nobles in the stories and films he’d seen weren’t exactly portrayed as busy with work; they seemed to mostly attend parties or meetings.

"So, it’s common for most nobles to have another job besides managing their land. Although, the nature of that work varies greatly—from critical roles in state affairs to jobs that are more like hobbies."

"Interesting. What about you, Theo? What’s your other job?"

"In my case, it’s more like a hobby," Theo said with a small, amused smile. "My father handles the estate management, political affairs, and social events, so I’m free to pursue my own interests."

Theo chuckled softly, but Damien remembered something.

"Wait, aren’t you a priest, Theo? I think Cedran called you that once."
