Chapter 73: A Lesson in Servitude

He remembered that Theo had shown him how to use the bath the first time, but since then, he’d always bathed alone. Or... had he? Wait a minute... Damien suddenly realized that, in this world, he had never actually bathed alone.

The realization left him stunned.

"Wait, Sebas, are you misunderstanding something?" Damien asked.

"I mean... I can bathe by myself, you know?"

"I’m well aware," Sebas replied calmly.

So, Sebas did know. Beside him, Theo looked a bit surprised as he glanced at Damien, but Damien chose to ignore it. It wasn’t about being washed; it was about letting them wash him.

Still, Damien was more confused than ever.

"Um... can you explain this?" he asked.

"Indeed," Theo added, nodding in agreement. "I don’t understand why we’d suddenly need help for this. I’d like an explanation as well."

Damien wasn’t sure if Theo was truly backing him up or if there was something else at play. It seemed like a conversation with Theo would be needed later.

"Of course, I’ll explain," Sebas said, raising his index finger as if to punctuate his point.

"Firstly, we believe this will be a good opportunity for Sir Damien to become accustomed to interacting with people."

"Accustomed to people?" Damien repeated, puzzled.

"What exactly do you mean by that?" Theo asked, looking just as confused.

"I apologize if this sounds blunt, but Sir Damien has already shown great poise in public settings. If you continue learning basic etiquette and protocols, I believe you’ll have no issue in social situations."

Theo nodded in agreement with Sebas’s assessment. Damien couldn’t help but feel a bit proud, knowing that his efforts had been noticed and appreciated, even if they were just surface-level improvements.

"However," Sebas continued, "in private matters, I fear there is still some way to go."

"Oh..." Theo made a sound as if something clicked for him. Meanwhile, Damien was still confused. Seeing the look on Damien’s face, Sebas added more clarification.

"To be more direct, I believe Sir Damien needs to become comfortable with being attended to by servants."

"Indeed, Damien does seem overly self-conscious around the staff," Theo remarked thoughtfully.

Damien couldn’t deny it, but it wasn’t like he could help it. He felt that Theo and the others didn’t pay enough attention to the staff. Wasn’t it natural to be aware of other people watching you?

He understood the logic behind getting used to it, but being in a position where others took care of him was something he still struggled with. Just as Damien was about to voice his objection, Sebas raised his middle finger next to his index finger.

"Secondly... and this may sound disrespectful to Sir Damien, for which I might earn your scolding, Master Theo..." Sebas hesitated, clearly cautious.

Hearing this, Theo’s eyebrow twitched slightly.

What could Sebas be so willing to risk Theo’s anger over? It seemed to involve Damien directly, and his curiosity grew.

"Theo, I’d like to hear what this is about," Damien said, glancing at him.

After a brief pause, Theo nodded, signaling for Sebas to continue.

"With your permission, I’ll speak openly. I believe that serving Sir Damien will be an invaluable experience for these four... no, including Lupusregina, these five attendants."

Theo seemed to understand immediately, and a faint smile crossed his face, though it was mixed with a bit of amusement.

Damien, on the other hand, was still completely lost.

"Um, sorry... but I really don’t understand what you mean," he admitted.

"Sebas is trying to use Damien as practice for these four," Theo said, answering for Sebas when Damien let out a confused and unsure voice.

Hearing this, Sebas bowed deeply to Damien.

"The young master is correct. To be frank, Sir Damien is an invaluable figure for these attendants to practice with, even if they make mistakes. The only consequence would be Master Theo’s displeasure, and even that can likely be soothed by Sir Damien himself. Therefore, there’s no need for excessive worry."

When put that way, Damien had to admit it made sense. Within limits, Damien wouldn’t get angry if a servant made a mistake. After all, he wasn’t someone who was accustomed to being served in the first place.

Sometimes, Damien might not even notice if something went wrong. And as Sebas mentioned, if Theo ever got upset over it, Damien would do his best to calm him down. After all, Damien wasn’t used to being in a position where others would get scolded for his sake. The thought made him feel guilty.

In a way, Damien was indeed an ideal candidate for their practice.

Sebas’s words made sense to Damien, and he nodded in agreement. However, Theo’s expression had turned a bit sour, and Damien could tell he wasn’t entirely pleased with the idea. Damien made a mental note to pamper Theo later as a way to make up for it.

It dawned on him—this was one of those situations. When it was framed as something done for his benefit, Damien felt inclined to decline, thinking it wasn’t necessary. But when it was presented as being helpful to the servants and even to Theo, he felt a sense of duty and found himself willing to go along with it.

Sebas really had a way of persuading people.

"Thirdly," Sebas continued, just as Damien was about to agree. Sebas raised his thumb now.

Wait, there’s more?

"By having Sir Damien involved in the training, management, and supervision of young servants, and creating a group of individuals loyal to him, it will be extremely beneficial for future matters."

Theo’s face shifted as if something clicked in his mind. He suddenly realized the full scope of Sebas’s plan.

"I see... That’s why you’re focusing on the younger ones who haven’t been influenced much yet. But it’s not just that, is it? The Whitlock Family, the Riese family, the Marston family, and the Steinholt Trading Company... Sebas, you’ve really thought this through," Theo said, a smile of both admiration and slight amusement crossing his face.
