Chapter 89: In the Waiting Room

It was now a waiting game. All of them were in the NNICU waiting area when they brought Hyden in. He was a wreck, as was Daniel.

Within minutes, the head neonatal doctor in charge of the case walked in and motioned for them to have a seat. He needed to go over some particulars with Patrick’s condition.

"I won’t lie to you and tell you everything’s going to be okay because, number one, we don’t know. The doctor that was taking care of him and delivered him at the ranch—I believe his name is Lex—did everything that he could possibly do to save this child’s life. If it hadn’t been for him, you’d be making arrangements for a funeral."

"But he’s not out of the woods yet. He’s going to be here for probably a month or so until his lungs can develop enough, even though he was full-term. What has me worried most of all is a flutter within his heart. I know that he is hybrid and I don’t know a whole lot about hybrids."

"He’s going to be a learning case for all of us. Things that he teaches us as we care for him will help others should they be born with similar conditions. He will have the best around-the-clock care that he can be offered. I’m going to need your nectar, Hyden, because of its healing properties. Since you’re his biological birth parent, it will help him grow stronger because of its nutrients. We have a room set up for the two of you. Who is the father?"

Daniel walked up. "I am, sir."

"You look like you’re fixing to pop. When are you due?"

"Honestly, anytime now. That ride was a little much in the stress department."

"Let’s get you examined. You’re no good to the two of them if you can’t be with him."

About that time, Daniel placed his hand on his stomach and groaned. That was followed by the sound of running water on the floor.

"Looks like we need another wheelchair because you’re about ready to give birth yourself." ƒreewebɳovel.com

"Go with Daniel. I’m staying here for Patrick. We can’t be two places at one time," Hyden told Zach.

The doctor stuck his head out of the NNICU waiting room and yelled, "Wheelchair now! We got one on the way!"

---

Daniel sat down in the wheelchair. They rolled right out the front door, right down to delivery. It wasn’t any real big pain, just some cramps. The nurses were buzzing all around, making sure he was ready. They stripped him down to nothing—they had never delivered a Genman child before.

Lex walked in. "Let me show you the way it’s done, ladies. Put your feet up in the stirrups, Daniel, and we’re going to get the show on the road."

There was one nurse placing monitors on the belly for the heartbeat and O₂ stat monitors.

"This is going to be your average hybrid Genman birth—nothing out of the ordinary. It takes place quickly from start to stop. Hyden was a little more difficult because he was purebred, but what happened to Patrick doesn’t happen often," Lex smiled as he explained.

Daniel looked down at Lex. "Okay, little brother, are you going to talk all day long, or am I going to get this pain in my vent out?"

"Just wait. Let me know when you’re ready to push."

On the next pain, Daniel took a deep breath and pushed as hard as he could. There was no elevation in blood pressure—O₂ stats were fine for the dad and baby. Daniel started to crown and the baby’s head started to ease out. He took a deep breath and let it out, relaxed.

"Okay, on the next pain, Daniel, you need to push again just like you did last time. Now the shoulders are a little bit wider because Hyden is pure blood, but who knows—he might take after the hybrid style with a little bit narrower shoulders at birth."

All of the delivery room nurses were amazed, as were the three attending physicians. Lex was just doing his job.

"Okay, here comes another pain, Lex, and it’s a biggie," Daniel announced.

Daniel pushed on the stirrups and groaned and pushed as hard as he could. Slowly the baby started sliding out.

"I wish my labor had been this easy," one of the nurses remarked.

With the third and final push, out slid Robert Wayne Spinelli. When he got popped on the ass, he started screaming.

"Just like you, Daniel—he’s got a big mouth," Lex started to laugh.

Lex cleaned him up and tied off the umbilical cord. Zach had the privilege of cutting it. What they didn’t know was that the whole event was being recorded by one of the medical staff for Hyden’s sake.

Lex carried the baby around and placed him in Daniel’s arms, putting his mouth near his nipple. Robert went right for it. Lex pulled down his mask.

"That, ladies and gentlemen, is how a Genman gives birth—no drugs, nothing but just a lot of genetics. And Daniel is hybrid. Just think, a true Genman’s birth is even easier. By the time Daniel has three or four of these things, he’ll spit them out like jungo seeds."

"At least I wasn’t the one who threatened his mate that he would never get another piece in his life," Daniel smiled at Lex.

"Oh gee, no one can have an off day. Plus, yours did not weigh as much as mine did. If he had not come almost three weeks early, he probably would have hit fifteen pounds."

When one of the nurses attending asked Lex, "Do you have any pictures?" Of course, to a new dad, that was the wrong thing to ask—he had a phone that was full of them. They all complimented him on his taste in fathers also.

"I can’t believe that Chris is human. He’s a good-looking man. That’s too much of a good thing—shame I didn’t see him before you did," one of the nurses commented. That brought a small laugh to the delivery room.

"Well, let’s get him finished cleaned up. He needs to lay down for about an hour and rest, then he’ll be ready to go back to Hyden’s side," the doctor instructed.

The doctor looked at Lex. "That quick of a recovery from birth?"

"Yes, Genmen do recover quite rapidly from birth—it’s in our genetics. The baby, by tomorrow morning, will be ready to start daily travel."

---

They sent Daniel to a room and Robert to the nursery. Lex went to be with Hyden in the waiting room and brought pictures of his newest son. Hyden was very emotional that he had missed the birth of his first son and started to cry. The doctor that had recorded the whole event sat down beside him and played the video of Robert’s birth for him. This helped Hyden greatly.

Another young couple showed up at the waiting room. Leo and Emma Rich’s daughter Allison had been transferred here from another hospital due to the fund set up here to help premature babies, no matter what the parents could afford. At twenty-seven weeks old, it was going to be touch and go for Allison. The doctors didn’t give the young couple much hope for her survival.

Lex made sure that Hyden was okay and that he had everything he needed. Soon he and Zach would have to head back to the Z1 because Roger was getting close, and at his age as a first-timer, it would be touch and go for him also.

"Now you and Daniel take care of that baby—he’s your only concern. Don’t worry about anything else. I’ll be back to check on you, and other people will too," Zach hugged his grandson-in-law.

Hyden thanked Zach for everything that had been done for Patrick. He hugged Lex and Zach both before they left.
