Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 517 : Story 517: The Silent Forest
The forest stood still, its skeletal trees clawing at the pale moonlight like silent sentinels. The air was thick with dread, every step the ZETU team took muffled by the damp, decaying ground. Captain Marcus "Iron Will" Kane held up his fist, signaling the squad to halt. In the distance, the faint rustling of leaves hinted at movement—but it was too deliberate, too calculating to be the mere wind.
"We're being stalked," whispered Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro, her sharp eyes scanning the darkness. Her breath misted in the cold air as her fingers brushed the grip of her twin pistols.
"Riley, find a vantage point," Kane ordered.
Officer Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett silently climbed the gnarled remains of a nearby tree, her sniper rifle slung over her back. She perched on a sturdy branch and peered through her scope, sweeping the forest for signs of movement.
"Captain," Riley murmured into her comms. "We've got incoming. A lot of them. Coming from every direction."
"How many?" Kane asked, already suspecting the answer.
"Enough to bury us alive," she replied grimly.

"Form up!" Kane barked. "Shield, take point. Blaze, cover our flank. Brain, can you get comms back up?"
"I'm trying," Ethan "Brain" O'Connor muttered, his fingers racing over his tablet. "Whatever's jamming us is mobile. It's out there with them."
Before Kane could respond, a bloodcurdling howl erupted from the treeline, and the forest came alive. Shadows moved with inhuman speed, their guttural snarls echoing through the clearing. The first wave of zombies emerged, their decayed faces illuminated by the dim moonlight.
"Light 'em up!" Kane shouted.
Sergeant Jenna "Blaze" Hart didn't hesitate. With a roar, she unleashed a stream of fire from her flamethrower, the flames licking hungrily at the advancing horde. The smell of burning flesh filled the air, but the zombies didn't slow.
Riley's rifle cracked from her perch, each shot taking down a target with precision. Shield stood at the front, his riot shield absorbing the relentless blows of the undead as he swung his baton with calculated force.
"They're not stopping!" Shield yelled, sweat dripping down his brow.
"They're pushing us into a trap," Huntress said, firing her pistols at the nearest zombies. Her tone was calm, but the urgency in her movements betrayed her.
Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet trembled, and a deep, guttural roar tore through the forest. From the shadows emerged a towering figure, its pale, emaciated frame shrouded in mist. Its glowing eyes locked onto the team, and it let out a deafening roar.
"What the hell is that?!" Brain shouted, his voice tinged with panic.
"The source of the jammer," Huntress said, her eyes narrowing.
"Focus fire on the big one!" Kane commanded, pumping his shotgun.
As the team rallied, the monstrous figure charged, its movements impossibly fast for its size. The battle for survival in the heart of the Silent Forest had truly begun.
