Horrific Shorts: Zombie Edition-Chapter 583: Story : Dunes of Despair
The scorching heat of the desert was relentless as the ZETU team approached the abandoned village of Al-Muharraq. What was once a thriving oasis had turned into a lifeless husk, its palm trees withering under the weight of an unnatural curse. The mission brief had been vague, warning of grotesque creatures terrorizing nearby settlements. As they drew closer, the stench of decay grew stronger, mingling with the dry desert air.
"Is this place cursed, or what?" Jenna "Blaze" Hart muttered, clutching her flamethrower tightly.

"I'm picking up strange readings," Ethan "Brain" O'Connor said, his high-tech tablet flickering with distorted energy signals. "The activity is scattered, but it's definitely not random."
Captain Marcus "Iron Will" Kane raised his hand, signaling the team to halt. His sharp eyes scanned the desolate landscape, noting the broken remnants of mud-brick houses and toppled watchtowers. "Stay sharp. Something's off here."
As if on cue, a guttural wail echoed through the air, followed by the sound of dragging feet. Emerging from the shadows of a dried-up riverbed were the desiccated forms of what could only be described as sand-mummies. Their skeletal frames were covered in layers of cracked, sunbaked flesh, and their glowing eyes pierced through the night.
"Contact!" Marcus barked, raising his shotgun.
The creatures moved unnaturally fast for their decayed state, their elongated arms clawing at the air as they charged. Riley "Quick Shot" Bennett, perched on a nearby dune, lined up her first target and fired. The bullet shattered the creature's skull, but the rest of its body kept advancing until Marcus finished it off with a close-range blast.
"They're tougher than zombies," Riley called out. "Aim for the spine!"
Derek "Shield" Coleman braced himself as two mummies lunged at him simultaneously. With a powerful swing of his riot shield, he sent one flying into a nearby wall. "Blaze, I could use a little help here!"
"On it!" Jenna shouted, unleashing a torrent of fire. The flames consumed the mummies, but instead of disintegrating, they writhed and howled, their glowing eyes burning brighter.
"Ethan, what the hell is going on?" Marcus demanded.
"There's a source nearby!" Ethan shouted, furiously tapping his tablet. "Something is keeping them alive. Lila, it's coming from that temple ahead!"
Detective Lila "Huntress" Navarro nodded, her dual pistols at the ready. She sprinted toward the crumbling temple at the edge of the village, dodging attacks from mummies as she went. Inside, she found a weathered altar surrounded by glowing runes. At its center was a blackened urn, pulsing with an eerie light.
"Found it!" Lila said into her comms. "But it's protected by—"
Before she could finish, a massive sand-mummy emerged, twice the size of the others, with jagged claws and a chest glowing with runic symbols.
"Take it down!" Marcus ordered, leading the charge.
As the team engaged the towering creature, Lila fired a well-placed shot at the urn. It shattered, releasing a burst of energy that caused the remaining mummies to collapse into piles of sand.
The team regrouped, breathing heavily.
"Another ancient curse neutralized," Marcus said grimly. "Let's hope it stays that way."
In the distance, the sand shifted unnaturally, hinting that the desert's secrets were far from over.
