Chapter 59: Courting Death

Xu Changqing knocked on the door of the house that had just emitted smoke.

Thump. Thump. Thump.

"Who is it?"

An aged voice drifted out.

Xu Changqing peered through the crack in the door and saw a pale face pressed against it.

"Oh my god, a ghost."

Startled, Xu Changqing immediately recoiled, rushing to Wang Yufan’s side.

"Master, there was a ghost just now."

"Are you sure you weren’t mistaken?"

Xu Changqing nodded, "Master, absolutely not. I saw a terrifying face through the door crack."

Just then, with a creak the door opened from the inside, and an old woman, looking somewhat pale, walked out.

"Were you the ones knocking just now?"

Wang Yufan pointed his right hand towards Xu Changqing, the meaning self-evident, and the old woman stared at Xu Changqing.

Having already been startled by the old woman, Xu Changqing still felt a chill when she stared at him again.

"Alas, what a miserable fate. Another day of being sold out by Master." Xu Changqing cried out in his heart.

Xu Changqing forced a smile onto his face.

"Madam, we are travelers from out of town and wish to stay here for the night. Would that be possible? Here are some spirit stones."

As Xu Changqing spoke, he pulled out the spirit stones from his pouch.

Upon seeing the spirit stones, the old woman’s rigid expression softened slightly.

"Alright, then you may come in and stay for a night."

The old woman said, then entered first.

"Master, let’s go in too."

Xu Changqing said to Wang Yufan, who nodded.

After they entered, the old woman pointed them to a room. When Xu Changqing asked if there were two empty rooms, the old woman said there was only one room left, but it had two large beds, enough for two people to sleep in.

Hearing this, Xu Changqing was a bit puzzled.

"Madam, I see there are still a few rooms, aren’t there? The spirit stones I gave you should be enough."

"Those rooms are already full."

Hearing this, Xu Changqing was stunned. He thought to himself, ’Isn’t this your home, not an inn? We’re just staying for one night, are there other people living here?’

Wang Yufan didn’t say anything further and then entered the room.

As soon as he entered, he saw his Master and Little Black chewing on something. Xu Changqing realized that his Master was secretly eating again without calling him.

Just as he rushed forward, Wang Yufan pulled out several steamed buns.

"Changqing, come eat. You must be hungry too."

Although he didn’t know where these buns came from, Xu Changqing was still very touched. His Master had finally remembered him for once.

But when Xu Changqing saw what his Master was eating, he froze, and instantly felt that the buns in his hand were no longer appealing.

At this moment, Wang Yufan was gnawing on an entire roasted chicken, and even Little Black got a piece of the chicken’s rear.

Looking at the buns in his hand, they instantly became tasteless.

Wang Yufan had long guessed that his disciple would react this way.

"These buns are miniature steamed buns that I’ve treasured for several years. You’ll gain a lot from eating them."

Hearing his Master’s words, Xu Changqing’s eyes lit up, and he stuffed one into his mouth.

He then began to chew. It was indeed a meat bun, though the meat was a bit tough.

Time flew by, and soon it was night.

Xu Changqing tossed and turned, unable to sleep, while his Master and Little Black slept more soundly than the other.

Somehow, Xu Changqing remembered the old woman saying that the adjacent rooms were all full. He became curious, so he quietly slipped out, wanting to see what was truly going on.

Wang Yufan, lying on the bed, opened his eyes and muttered helplessly.

"Changqing, it’s not that your Master deliberately didn’t tell you, but some things you only truly understand after experiencing them yourself."

He thought back to himself. Ever since he came to this world, although he had reached the peak of a world within a hundred years, he had experienced many things. There was no dangerous place he hadn’t ventured into.

Countless years had passed, and sometimes he still missed the past.

In truth, Wang Yufan knew when he arrived outside this village that it wasn’t a village at all. More precisely, it was a demonic village.

Wisps of demonic energy lingered in the air here. It was normal for Xu Changqing not to feel them.

There were nearly a hundred villagers, large and small, here. Wang Yufan knew that they had likely long been corrupted by the demonic energy. What controlled them now was the demonic energy itself.

And the source of this demonic energy was a demonic artifact buried deep underground.

Wang Yufan had seen through everything long ago. Just after Xu Changqing left the room, Wang Yufan opened his eyes and sat up.

A golden light burst from his eyes as he looked downwards, towards the ground.

At this moment, beneath this village, a demonic axe was continuously emitting demonic energy, rising towards the surface. And from the demonic axe’s body, ten thousand thin threads formed by demonic energy connected to various points on the ground.

When Wang Yufan’s golden eyes swept down, the demonic axe trembled.

Then, a furious roar came from within the demonic axe.

"What petty scoundrel dares to spy on this Lord?"

Hearing this voice, a small golden figure appeared out of thin air before the demonic axe. It was Wang Yufan’s clone.

The voice from within the demonic axe exclaimed in surprise.

"Who are you, daring to come to this place?"

Wang Yufan, in the form of the small golden figure, looked at the pitch-black axe radiating demonic energy before him, feeling a slight doubt.

"Why is this Demonic Axe here?"

Hearing that the small golden figure didn’t answer him, and even dared to question him back, the voice within the Demonic Axe began to grow agitated.

Thus, a surge of pure demonic energy shot towards Wang Yufan.

"I don’t care who you are. If you dare not answer this Lord’s question, then die." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

The voice from within the Demonic Axe stopped halfway through its sentence, because the demonic energy it unleashed disappeared without a trace before reaching the small golden figure.

"Look at you, axe. I tried to talk to you nicely, but you wouldn’t listen. You just had to cause a fuss. Forget it, I’ll just come in and talk."

As Wang Yufan spoke, his figure flickered and he directly entered the internal space of the Demonic Axe.

"Hehehe. Human, are you arrogant or just ignorant? You dare to enter my Demonic Axe space."

A voice echoed, and then a colossal figure appeared.

It had three tentacles on its head, a snarling, bared-teeth expression, two wings on its back, and in its hand, it held the Demonic Axe itself.

Wang Yufan watched all of this calmly, and said indifferently.

"So it’s from the Heavenly Demon race. It seems you are the master of this Demonic Axe, but now you are merely a remnant soul."

"Hmm? How do you know so much? Who exactly are you?

Forget it, no matter who you are, coming here today means certain death. Once I absorb enough blood, I can be reborn again.

But I don’t think I’ll have to wait that long. Your vital energy is abundant. I believe that as long as I absorb and refine your blood, this Lord can immediately break free from this state. I’ve been here for tens of thousands of years, and I’m tired of it."

Listening to the Heavenly Demon’s self-important words, Wang Yufan shook his head helplessly.

"You really are a bat with chicken feathers stuck in it."

"Human, what do you mean by that?"

"It means, what kind of bird are you?"

Upon hearing this, the Heavenly Demon’s spiritual body’s eyes instantly flashed red.

"You’re courting death."
