Chapter 288: Chapter 288: The Curse

Without raising any suspicion, the soldiers started to gather around the infirmary. They pretended to be chatting or doing something miscellaneous around the infirmary.

Each had a spear in their hand or swords on their waist.

Siderius also told the healers inside the infirmary to evacuate from the building, leaving only him inside.

Siderius entered the room. There was only one patient at the moment. Jax the survivor.

"How are you doing, Jax?" Siderius smiled gently.

"White hair... Are you the White Witch?!" Jax said.

"Aye. That is what they called me."

"It is an honor to meet you, my lord. Let me... Argh!"

Jax tried to stand up but his wounds acted up, causing him to fell back to the bed.

"Easy now. You don’t need to get up."

"Thank you, my lord."

Siderius grabbed a stool and sat beside Jax.

"I have accepted the mission to deal with the beast that is troubling Scalize. Again. I am here to ask you a few questions about it. Since you are the only survivors." Siderius said.

"You are here to help us again, my lord? We are very lucky to have your assistance. Please ask away, my lord.

If I know anything, I will tell you."

"Good man. First, describe the creature to me."

"The creature..."

On that day, Jax was one of the last few soldiers to leave. He stayed behind to pick up the traps they laid out for the creature.

The place they picked usually had merchants and hunters walking around so they needed to clean it up or else innocent people would get hurt.

Jax was just focusing on removing the traps when he heard a rustling noise in the bush nearby.

When he turned toward the bush, a big wolf jumped out at him. A long and tall wolf that stood on two legs. Its snout was twice as long and twice as big as the biggest wolf Jax had seen.

It moved like a hunched human with its incredibly long claws as its main weapon. The wolf sliced Jax a few times on his armor.

Jax was barely able to defend himself.

Soon, he was pushed down on the ground. The wolf held him in place and opened its large mouth full of sharp white teeth and saliva.

Jax thought he was going to die that day. The beast bit into the side of his abdomen, tearing out a large chunk of meat. It was going to eat him alive if the commander didn’t come to check and led a lot of soldiers with him.

The wolf ran away once it saw the group of soldiers. Jax only had a few breaths left but he survived. The commander brought him back quickly and the healer was able to secure his life.

Jax finished his story.

"It stands on two legs?!" Siderius blurted out.

"Yes, my lord. If I didn’t see the big snout on its face and its perky ears, I would have thought it was a big man or something similar." Jax said.

"I’m afraid you are correct, Jax." Siderius placed his sword next to the bed.

"What do you mean, my lord?"

"What you encountered was not a Wolf, nor a Chaos Wolf. It is a Werewolf."

"A werewolf?!" Jax widened his eyes.

"A cursed human. They bear the weight to eat the flesh of their own species and go completely crazy a few times in the month.

Whoever gets bit by them will also turn into a werewolf..."

Siderius prolonged his last sentence, making sure Jax heard every word.

"My lord... Do you mean..."

"Lift your shirt up for me, Jax. Show me the wound at the side of your abdomen." Siderius said.

Jax’s trembling hands grabbed the end of his shirt. He slowly lifted it up. The large chunk of meat that was gone had found its way back somehow. The wound that should have cost Jax a few months to heal, had completely disappeared, leaving a large white spot in its place.

"My lord... I... I..." Jax’s lips trembled. His throat couldn’t form comprehensible words.

"There are ways to get rid of this curse." Siderius continued.

Jax looked at him with hope.

"The quickest way is death." Siderius picked up his sword and showed it to Jax. "Death as a human and you will not suffer the transformation into the werewolf. You won’t have to lose your mind and kill innocent people.

Die as a human or live as a wolf."

Jax’s hand reached out to the handle of Blazing Soul. His jaw clenched tight.

"Please tell Baron Fisher to take care of my family."

"Will do."

Jax drew the sword and placed it on his neck.

Siderius grabbed the blade.

"My lord?"

"My blade is extremely dull. If you’re trying to kill yourself with it, it will be a very painful death.

Death is the quickest way. But there is other way to be rid of this curse.

You have proved yourself worthy to live, Jax. I will help you accomplish it."

Jax lowered the blade. "What is the other way, my lord?"

"We kill the werewolf that spread the curse to you before you have your first transformation."

"When would that be?"

"Full moon. And if I remember correctly... That will be seven days from now."

Siderius walked out of the infirmary. The commander was already there with his soldiers, ready to rush in at any time.

"How did it go, my lord?" He said.

"Jax is a good man. He was willing to die to remain a human. He has no sign of early transformation yet so we still have time."

"Seven days, right?"

Siderius nodded. "Seven days. In the meantime, guard this place. Make sure no one comes in or out. We don’t want the creature to come into contact with Jax. It could make him transform early.

Only allow people who you completely trust to interact with Jax."

"I understand, my lord."

"Good." Siderius strapped the sword back on his waist. "I will go find the hunter and figure out the identity of this beast."

The hunter that Jude mentioned was Jaro, an old hunter that lived near the Crossroads Inn. He had a lonely cabin at the edge of the woods.

Siderius took Red out of the stables to ride to the cabin. Lycan the wolverine climbed to the back of the horse and travelled with him.

The wolverine had completely grown up now. It was much bigger than an average wolverine. It was almost the size of a small leopard.

"Let me lead you to investigate a case of Lycanthropy, Lycan." Siderius chuckled at the word play and rode out of Scalize.
