I Became An Eldritch Horror-Chapter 28: Faceless (4)
Since neither of us could sleep anymore, Daniella and I decided to head to a street vendor to buy some chicken.
We left the apartment, the cool night air wrapping around us as we made our way down the street.
The city streets were quiet, illuminated by dim streetlights and distant flickering neon signs.
"So... do you like chess?" Daniella asked, slipping her hand into the pocket of her large white sweater. She wore it with a small white short, which honestly made her look cute, almost innocent.
I let out a breath through my nose. "Is that a new pickup line or something?"
"Maybe. A word is whatever you believe it is. If I say sect really fast and you’re naughty-minded, you’ll hear sex instead."
I glanced at Daniella, who tilted her head to stare at me. "You are the weirdest Watcher I’ve ever seen."
"I could say the same about you. Since when do Eldritch Horrors smile and act nice?"
I scoffed, flicking my head to the side. "I’m not a normal type of guy, so don’t judge me by your standards."
She laughed softly. "Weirdo."
I didn’t react, just stared at the street ahead. The atmosphere was calm, almost human.
To others, we might have looked like a celebrity couple out for a midnight walk. Yet neither of us was human.
An Eldritch being and a Watcher. Beings none of them even knew existed.
"When will we be heading for the baptism?"
Daniella, who seemed lost in thought, flinched slightly. Without looking my way, she answered, "It happens tomorrow, or rather today since it’s already one, but I’m not sure you should come along because of your whole destroyer of worlds thing."
"Don’t we have eighteen hours on the clock? Isn’t that enough to do many things?"
"Yes, we do." She agreed, leaning her body toward me and drifting closer, her path bending instead of walking straight, which made me in turn drift to the side until my arm brushed against the glass of a street-side store.
Pausing, she glanced up at me. "But even with that extra time, we aren’t absolutely sure we’ll be able to hide your identity completely."
She raised her hand and reached for my face, cupping my cheeks. "Can’t you just change your face?"
For some reason, she was getting too clingy. If she thought she could kill me now, she was gravely mistaken. Besides, a servant can’t kill their master unless they had a weapon from the Higher Narrative.
So why was she acting like we were best friends?
I sighed. "I can change my face. But I won’t. Anything that isn’t my face looks too ugly and gross when I see it in the mirror."
She blinked slowly, clearly unimpressed. "Are you serious right now? You’ll risk being caught because you want to stay pretty?"
I removed her hands from my face. "Yes." Without waiting for her, I continued forward, slipping my hands into the pockets of my trousers.
Frozen for a moment, staring at the hand I’d pushed away, she suddenly smiled, then hurried to catch up.
"You’re truly a weird creature."
I raised a brow. "How so?"
"Well," she said, staring at her hand with a small smile, "your hands are warm and soft. It’s unlike any Outer being I’ve ever seen."
Tilting her head, she added, "And you didn’t react at all when I got close. I classify myself as a 0.01% beauty and you didn’t feel good or bad."
So she was testing me.
I smirked and released just a bit of energy.
Daniella nearly slipped, the pressure sinking into her bones, forcing her down.
Even through the strain, she grinned. "Bastard."
I didn’t slow down. "That’s Master to you." I glanced back at her, my eyes glowing faintly with qi. "Next time you try to test me, I’ll cut off your head."
Daniella’s face paled instantly, but unlike most people I’d met, she didn’t apologize or overreact.
’I like her.’ She was going to be very useful going forward. "Come along." I waved lazily, dispersing the energy.
She exhaled sharply a few times, then took a deep breath before jogging toward me.
"Shouldn’t you treat your servant better, Master? I’m bound to you for life after all."
"Not my problem. If you can’t take harsh treatment, then just die."
She chuckled softly. "You’re really insane. Now I’m starting to understand how you went around killing gods and destroying worlds. But I’ve always wanted to ask..."
We were already in front of the vendor when she continued, "Did you really destroy all those worlds just because you were a crazy monarch? You don’t match the story I was told about you."
I didn’t know whether it was my presence or the fact that she was now my servant, but Daniella’s face filled with horror as I replied, "Does it really matter? No matter how I went about it, or whether I was right or wrong, I destroyed worlds. That’s that. Good path or bad, intentional or forced, in the end, isn’t the result all that matters?"
I placed a hand on her head. "So no matter how good this devil acts toward you, never let your guard down."
I lowered my head to her ear. "Cause the moment you do... Gchk."
Daniella shivered at the sound. When I lifted my head, her face was bright crimson.
"Are you seriously blushing while I’m making a threat?"
"What?!" she yelped. "It was ticklish." She shivered again, a small giggle escaping. "Plus it was cute how you had to lower your head so low."
I facepalmed. ’I take it back.’ This girl was a complete psycho. And an insane one.
The chicken vendor stared at us with sparkling eyes. Once we stopped talking, she burst out excitedly, "What can I get you? Don’t worry, it’s on the house! You two are just so adorable together!"
Daniella’s face brightened immediately. And in that moment, I knew she was about to say something stupid.
"No, miss, he’s my master, not my boyfriend."
The vendor’s eyes widened, then she grinned even harder, placing a palm to her cheek like she was already living an imaginary fantasy. "I call my hubby my servant too, so it’s no biggie. Maybe I’ll let him call me his servant next."
Today I learned something new. And finally understood why Uriel transmigrated me years ago.
Humans truly had the wildest imaginations.
