Chapter 159: Chapter 159: The Night Before

[You have gained 1000 experience points]

[You have received x1 Wolf Fur, x10 Wolf Tooth]

A large piece of red fur flies up from the bottomless pit. Accompanied by large teeth that are at least the size of an adult human.

Blaze lands safely on the ground, just before all the electrical energy is gone out. Then he reverts back to his normal self.

[You have lost the status effect <Divine>]

[You have gained the following status effect: Woodland Terror (NEGATIVE), Woodland Decomposition (NEGATIVE)]

[Your power and the power of your item have been locked again]

[You have gained the status effect <Daywalker>]

<Daywalker>: You may use some of your power.

Blaze quickly equips the Shadow Tattered Cloak and the Tattered Mask. Its black fabric covers him whole, just before the blinding aura disappears. He still has nothing on his body.

Lucia runs toward him.

"Wow! You are still that powerful. But why are your power lightning-based now?"

"Lightning-based? So my power isn’t lightning in your memory?"

Lucia shakes her head, "No... You have shadow and moonlight power. You have always had it."

"Interesting..." Blaze rubs his jaw.

"What’re you thinking?"

"Oh, nothing really. I just think that I should keep this in mind."

Lucia widens her big animated eyes, as if she is asking him to explain.

"Don’t worry. It’s nothing to be concerned about. We should head back to John."

"How are we going to prove to him that we kill that monster? You disintegrate it into pieces."

"Don’t worry. I have this."

Blaze opens his palm to summon the Wolf Fur. The fur is so large that it covers the pair entirely.

"Sorry about that." Blaze quickly puts it in the Inventory again.

"Pocket dimension?"

"Of course. Where do you think I store all my items?"

"Well. There can be many reasons. Like bound items for example. You wouldn’t need a pocket dimension to store it. However, that wolf fur is definitely different."

Blaze and Lucia then head towards the campfire again.

John is already there to wait for them. He is cooking up some kind of soup. The smell spreads far. Blaze and Lucia can smell it from a mile away.

John shares a wide smile. His teeth are all crooked with moss sticking in between.

"You boy and girl sure do things quickly. Is it done?"

"It is done." Blaze nods.

He opens his palm, a giant wolf tooth appears.

John is exhilarated at the sight. He hops toward Blaze then observes the tooth close.

The tooth is fresh, it still has some blood stuck on its root.

"Oh... It is that nasty wolf alright. I thought you two will have a much harder time facing it though. But see that you return so soon. It must be easy."

"Eh. Not really. It just happens that my power counters the beast’s power. If it isn’t for that, we may still be fighting it at this moment." Blaze says.

"As I promise, the key."

John takes off his necklace and gives it to Blaze. The 1008th key is on the necklace, dangling freely.

"Thank you." Blaze grabs it.

"One warning though. The Undercity is a deeper level of this layer."

"Deeper?" Lucia raises her eyebrows. "Isn’t it the way out of here?"

"It is. But that doesn’t change the nature of the Undercity. As you may already know, time works differently here. A few months here can be just a couple of days outside your world.

BUT. Time stretches even wider in the Undercity. Down there, months turn to hours and years turn to days. Once you land there, you better make sure to get out of it soon or else..."

John looks at Blaze. He is the only person that has his real body here. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Lucia intensely stands closer to Blaze and grabs his hand tightly. Her eyes show all the worry in the world.

"I see. Don’t worry. We’re figuring out a way."

"Well then. I wish you two good luck!"

John salutes the two and then he falls down to the ground, turning back into the mindless stone statue.

John’s action reminds Blaze of the Trader. He too saluted Blaze when they split their paths. Blaze wonders if this is an indication of anything.

"Let’s go."

Blaze and Lucia leave the campfire. Blaze turns his head back one last time to look at the site. It may be only just a simple campsite but it is where he has his first kiss with Alyson. Well, maybe not with Alyson specifically.

"What are you looking at, Blaze?" Lucia tilts her head slightly.

"Just the tent we spent last night."

"Pfft! Come on now, it’s not like it’s the first time we spend the night together."

"Right..."

For her, it is just one of many intimate moments but not the first. Blaze rubs her head gently. She closes her eyes slightly, enjoying his hand. She looks exactly like a puppy being a pet.

What really is going on with you, Alyson? Who are you really? And more importantly, what am I?

There are so many memory alteration powers that Blaze can’t even be sure that what he knows is the truth. There is only one thing he can do and that is to fight for what he believes in.

They leave the campsite. Before going to the Undercity, they have to go through the village first. Night is coming soon and all the Wretched Souls will be appearing.

They can dart to the Undercity right away but if anything happens in between, they would have nowhere to go. Imagine that for some reason the door to the Undercity doesn’t open. Blaze and Lucia will be trapped in a wave of Wretched with zero percent of surviving.

So, as precaution, Blaze and Lucia decide to stay at the village for one night.

The door swings open, revealing Blaze and the red hair girl, Lucia.

"Ay, Jake! You come back early! You get the job done?" Cavanaugh lights up. The man is quenching his thirst with those poor liquor when they come in.

"Jake..." Lucia whispers. She shares a glance toward Blaze.

He shrugs. Everyone needs a cover in a wasteland.

Lucia squints her eyes. Why is it always this name?

"Of course I get the job done." Blaze sits at the bar counter. "Let me introduce to you. She is Lucia De la Croix, a close friend of mine."

"Close friend?" Lucia says.

"Okay, she’s my wife."

"I’m not your wife! What are you talking about?" Lucia’s face turns bright red.

"Haha!"

Cavanaugh smiles gently, sliding out a pair of glass from behind the counter.

"Lady. You drink?"

"As a devoted follower of the Holy Church, we are prohibited from drinking alcohol."

"Right... Water then?"

Cavanaugh pours two cups of water for Blaze and Lucia. He doesn’t have a lot of customers. Most are local drunkards. There are new people. But none of the two drink at all. He can only be disappointed in silence, weeping in his heart because of those who don’t know what a good liquor is.

"You... uh... have any better room than the hay bed before?"

"Of course, yes. But those aren’t free, boy."

"No worry. I have some stuff here that John gave me. See if you like anything."

John was really enthusiastic about the matchsticks. John allowed Blaze to take whatever he likes in his storage. John doesn’t have a lot of useful things however. Most are survival tools, some food and water. In this harsh world with no power, those are the most valuable items.

"Wow. Did you rob the poor soldier or somethin’?"

"Kinda. I gave him something he really likes."

"Lucky you. Well then, how long are you two staying?"

"Just tonight. We will be heading to the Undercity tomorrow."

"Two room?"

"Of..." Before Blaze can finish his sentence. Lucia jumps in.

"One room, please!"

"Well then. For a night, I will just take these. Deal?"

"Deal." Blaze nods in defeat.

The new room Cavanaugh prepares for them is much more acceptable than Blaze’s previous hay bed. It is in no way luxurious but at least should be accommodating enough.

It is a small room on top of the bar with a little glass window looking out onto the sunset. The bed is made of wool and handmade sheets.

Blaze did see some cattle on his way in. They are probably the village’s source for fabric.

Lucia removes her boots immediately and rushes toward the bed.

"I hate those boots!" She exclaims. Lucia has small tiny feet with cute little toes.

Lucia jumps onto the bed and spreads her limbs. It has been a while since she sleeps in a real bed. The tent doesn’t count. She looks exactly like a doll when lying on the bed.

"I’m glad you like it." Blaze says. "I’ll be sleeping on the floor alright."

"What’re you talking about?!"

Lucia grabs Blaze’s hand and pulls him closer. "It is a while since we’ve been together. That tent was too small! But this is an ideal room.

How about... we spent a little intimate time?"

Blaze: "..."
