I Only Want To Kill-Chapter 93: Speed beats everything
"You are..."
Sebastian murmurs.
Blaze doesn’t answer. Instead, he takes a look around.
An abandoned warehouse in the middle of nowhere, with a high ceiling that is perfect to stack several containers. Metal racks and large metal poles are everywhere, creating an artificial maze in this vast building.
"Surrender now, and you may live.
Refuse to obey, and all will die!"
Blaze says. His voice is low and calm, but it echoes in every corner of this building.
"You must be the famous Wraith!"
On the opposite side, a man walks out from the darkness.
Blonde hair, tall frame, and a crooked smile, Vincent Anderson.
Alongside him are two other plainclothes police officers that Sebastian can recognize.
Almost all of the people here are cops. But only Sebastian wears a police uniform.
Anderson claps his hands slowly.
"I did not anticipate that such a big fish would appear. Allow me to introduce myself..."
"Sergeant Vincent Anderson of the Akansa City Police Department. You have been holding that badge for more than twenty years."
Blaze squints his golden eyes, interrupting Anderson.
Anderson is visibly upset. He does not want anyone to cut him off.
Then Blaze turns back to face Sebastian.
"Psychotic Detective of Supernatural Investigation Division. Or that was who you were before you gave up everything and became a beat cop."
Sebastian’s face twitches a little, but he says nothing.
Anderson takes a deep breath, calms himself down, and says, "You seem to be familiar with us."
"Oh. To an extent."
Blaze has many souls to get information from. Nadyr alone has a lot of information about the Police Force. He worked tightly with them, after all.
"It is stupid for you to come here!"
Anderson yells.
"Now you will die with that arrogant fool."
Anderson gives the order, and all the enemies slowly close in.
Some hold melee weapons, and some hold guns.
They move in an organized manner. Their weapons are new and advanced. Their armor is high-tech and covers every tiny bit around their body.
They even have a complete force field protecting them, unlike the terrible barrier of the goons in the Roof.
"It is my pleasure to meet you, Wraith."
Sebastian seems to have no worry at all, he opens up his cigarette pack and offers one to Blaze.
"I don’t smoke."
"Pity. And here I thought I could have one last smoke with the famous hero."
The satisfying clack sound of a Zippo opening up. Orange fire burns the tip of the cigarette, delivering smoke to Sebastian’s lungs.
"Our cover won’t hold for long. They are getting in position."
Sebastian says.
Blaze nods.
Anderson jumps to a higher platform. His vision turns into a black, white, and red landscape. The red are the heat signals that help him locate people easily through walls and other concealment.
A much less exciting type of heat vision. But that is not his only power.
From the tips of his fingers, thin red strands crawl out. It reaches each different ally of his and connects to the back of their head.
The eyes of the tall woman turn orange. She can also see the silhouette of Blaze and Sebastian through walls.
Another strand goes into the back of the bald guy. Giving him a vision of the entire place.
The third strand goes into a skinny man that wears office clothes and a pair of glasses. His irises turn orange, illuminating the pair of glasses.
The skinny man presses his hand to the ground. Black vines reach out from under his skin and burrow under the cement floor.
The fourth connect with one plainclothes cop. The guy leads a group of armed police. Each with a rifle in their hands.
The cop signals the direction for his allies, telling them where to shoot.
And then, Anderson yells out.
"Attack!"
The tall woman from before steps out of her cover. She slams her giant shield on the floor, its size is enough to cover her entire body and a few more allies.
She pushes forward at a quick speed.
Several cops get behind her and follow her path.
"The Wraith is an Electrokinesis user! Don’t let him run away! Get close and dirty!"
Anderson yells out again.
Sebastian’s power is Psychosis Bullets. Its obvious weakness is also the firearm’s weakness: close combat.
The dirty cops don’t know much about Blaze’s power. But they know he can shoot out lightning. That makes them think that he is also a marksman with a melee weakness.
Black vines burst out from the ground again and lunge themselves toward Blaze and Sebastian.
The bald guy in the priest robe stands the furthest. Two spheres of pink energy cover his palms.
He swirls his two hands. Large pieces of metal fly up from the ground, aiming at Blaze and Sebastian.
The armed group of dirty cops crouches on one knee and aims their gun at them, providing cover fire if needed. These are the non-combat Awakened, they need the help of weapons in order to cause damage.
Blaze lowers the center of his body. Electricity bounces around chaotically in his lungs.
Lightning Stream, the Sub Power of his second A-rank power, makes Blaze produce electricity every breathing second.
With it, he always has electricity to spare.
Blaze opens his mouth and breathes in. Air is sucked inside his lungs, mixed together with the tiny lightning bolts. Their energies fuse together and create a yellow aura sphere around Blaze.
[You have gained Lightning Ascension (temporary effect)]
[Lightning Ascension (temporary effect): Agility +60 - All your other physical attributes +30; Cognition +20 - All your mental attributes +10.]
The fabric of the Shadow Tattered Cloak is flapping chaotically due to the wind the aura produced.
Blaze lifts his heels up, standing on his toes. And in the blink of an eye, he and Sebastian disappear.
All the attacks smash their original locations, catching nothing but air and dust.
"What?!"
All the people who are connected to Anderson and Anderson himself blurt out.
Yellow lightning finally appears, tracing Blaze’s path, and the deafening thunder follows right after.
Blaze grabs Sebastian and makes a run for it. His speed is so fast that Blaze can temporarily ignore physics.
He runs along the wall to reach a high scaffolding inside the warehouse.
Sebastian feels nauseous and dizzy as fuck, but he tries his best to maintain composure, preventing his throat from throwing up.
"Cover me!"
Blaze leaves two words before vanishing again.
Sebastian smirks, struggling a bit to get up. He still holds his two guns tightly, ready to kill.
The opposite side finally catches up to what happened.
A cop yells in a horrific tone.
"Speedster!"
Speedsters, the most notorious group of Awakened inside of Ranas. Similar to Enhancer but not exactly the same.
Enhancers enhance their physical attributes. But this is only acceptable when their speed is still relatively tame.
But if their speed crosses the threshold of the average human cognitive speed, they are now considered Speedsters instead.
Mental beats strength. And speed beats everything.
That is the common saying inside of Ranas. A Speedster can kill their enemy before they even have the time to react.
Because of that, Speedster is what the normal citizens of Ranas deem as the scariest Awakened of all.
The truth is much more complicated than that, however.
In Anderson’s and the connector’s vision, they can see a red streak of heat flashing.
"Open fire!"
Anderson screams.
