Chapter 98: Chapter 98: Deserters

"The number you have dialed is not available at the moment. Please leave your message after the tone."

The automatic voice emits from Adam’s phone.

He throws the phone down on the ground and then slams his hands on the table.

"Goddamnit! It is one. One rebelling cop and they can’t even handle it!"

Adam shouts. Everyone around lowers their head.

They have been called inside Adam’s office after Anderson went offline. No one was able to contact him for hours.

They know Sebastian has turned against them.

Sebastian Herrera isn’t actually one of them. He is a rare lone wolf inside the station.

Normally for a type like him, the police will try to make him accept a bribe, turning him into a crooked cop like them. Then, they won’t be needing to worry about him anymore.

If he turns against them, he too will be destroyed.

But no one dares to do that with Sebastian. First, he has connections outside of the Force. The Supernatural Investigation Division is a notorious organization. No one wants to mess with it.

Second, Sebastian is a wild card. He is actually psychotic, exactly like his nickname. No one can anticipate what he will do.

Therefore, they left him alone for all this time.

Adam even gave Sebastian a partner that was similar to him, Dominic Renly. A young cop that refused to be corrupted as well.

But then Dominic crossed the line. He tried to document their corruption. Adam has no choice but to kill him off.

He thought he had arranged a perfect scenario. One that even the great Psychotic Detective won’t figure out.

But he was too confident in his act full of holes.

Now, Sebastian has turned against them, and the first thing he struck was Adam’s most vulnerable weakness, his personal arsenal.

Every bullet, every weapon, and every piece of armor needs to be documented if anything happens to them. Adam needs to report to the higher-ups if they use the state resources.

That’s why he doesn’t touch the Force armory but builds his own. Or else his entire operation will be exposed.

Adam has been the King of Akansa for far too long to let that happen.

"What should we do now, Chief?"

A cop speaks up.

Adam pulls out a drawer full of phones. He replaces his broken one with a new one immediately.

"Call Kelly. Tell him to open the armory. Gather our forces and arm everyone to the teeth."

"But wouldn’t we need to report it later? The higher-ups will know..."

Adam pulls the collar of that cop and slaps him repeatedly at the head.

"Anderson is either dead or betrayed us! Do you understand?!

Whoever attacked us has him! What do you think they will do now? Letting us go?

They got our weapons. The more time they leave me, the better I can prepare.

I know that then they surely know that! They are coming for us right now!"

Adam yells like he is losing his mind, spit flies out from his mouth.

That cop holds his head in pain, daring not to speak another word.

"Go! Prepare our forces for war! Remember that all of you are in this with me!

We either get out of here with some reprimand from above, or we die!"

All the cops leave quickly. Only one plainclothes cop is left behind.

He is Zach Dunn, deputy of ACPD, only one rank lower than Adam.

"Sebastian cannot do it alone," Zach says. "He must have gotten help.

There is only one person daring enough to help him."

Adam grinds his teeth.

"The Wraith. We encountered him just yesterday, and the guy is already attacking us. What an asshole!"

"Is he strong?"

Zach says.

Answering him is a nodding head from Gulliver.

"I met a raven. Not his actual self. It’s probably a projection or some kind of similar power.

But that raven already has a terrifying mental power. Only I was able to resist it."

"So... how many Circlets do we have?"

Mental Protective Circlet, which the police usually call Circlet for short. It is a device that looks like a metal band that is worn on the head to counter mental power.

With it, it can neutralize almost every B-rank and below mental power. But it is costly to make, and the metal required to make it is very rare.

"We have around twenty at most in the armory."

Adam says.

"Hmmm."

Zach crosses his arms, staying silent as he drifts into thinking.

The Akansa Police Force is extremely rich. Almost everyone in their department has a nice house and a nice car.

These come from dirty money. The money they got from extorting the average citizens and cooperating with the criminals.

But it was used wastefully. Most of it was for personal uses or stupid obscenity. Adam didn’t even take a part out to strengthen the police force.

Simply because he thought there was no reason to.

If he did, the ACPD would have been much more prepared with lots more Circlets than now.

Adam realized this eventually, after the Wraith attacked the Roof.

But it is all too little too late now.

"Don’t look at me like that. I can feel your gaze."

Adam says.

Zach shrugs.

"As you are immune to that power, you won’t be needing the Circlet. I’ll take one and give the rest to our most capable officer.

Let’s just hope that you are just overreacting and they won’t be in that much of a rush to attack us."

Right as he finishes his sentence, a cop in uniform barges in, shoving the door wide open.

"Don’t you know how to knock, son?!"

Adam yells.

The cop is as pale as paper. His lips quiver.

"Kelly... Our armorer is nowhere to be found!"

"What?!"

Adam stands up.

Right after, several more cops arrive.

"Chief! Our communicator has deserted!"

"A few of my men are nowhere to be found, sir!"

"Sergeant Owens has left the station with all his subordinates!"

Adam inhales deeply. He falls down on his chair, his hand squeezing his forehead tightly.

He looks over to Zach.

"Still think I’m paranoid?"

Zach’s expression turns stern. He steps forward to maintain order around the agitated cops.

"Shut the hell up!

Someone tell me how many men have left in total!

And what about our armory?"

A sergeant walks out and salutes the man.

"Sir, yes, sir!

There is a total of 48 men who have deserted from our station. The current available personnel is around 70.

Our armory was robbed, most of the heavy weapons and high-tech devices were cleaned out. Only bullets and common vests are left.

Each platoon still has their own weaponry available." 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

After hearing the report, Adam calms himself. He lost all his anger from before. What is left is only the cold, calculating mind.

"Here is my order. Prepare for war."

All the cops look at each other. They can all feel the heaviness of this situation. This is no more a simple matter.

This is now life or death. The cops scatter once again, leaving Zach and Adam in the office.

"What are we going to do? They got us in a pit."

Zach says.

"Maybe... But I am still the Chief of Police of the Akansa City Police Department. I will order the A-force to strike."

Adam walks out to the window, looking at the scene outside.

"Is it possible?" Zach says.

Adam nods.

From the window, they can see a flaming horse come running at their headquarters.

On that horse is a large shadow figure covered in a black, ragged cloak.

He who shall not be named has arrived for vengeance.
