I Received System to Become Dragonborn-Chapter 1000: Found A Lead
The library of King Thalrion was unlike any other place Eccar had set foot in. Its great wooden arches stretched like living branches overhead, carved smooth but still showing the shape of the forest.
Sunlight pierced through latticed windows and falling onto rows upon rows of shelves that seemed endless. Each of these rows were filled with scrolls, tomes, and slabs of polished wood inscribed with Elven language.
It smelled of cedar and ancient ink and a sacred hush hanging in the air.
For a couple of days now Eccar and Krono had sat in this big sanctuary combing through its countless records under the watchful eyes of the Elves.
Sharp and suspicious glances and whispers always followed them from some who couldn’t believe the king had granted these outsiders access to their holiest knowledge. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦
Others held their tongues and reminded themselves that if King Thalrion himself had permitted it, then surely there was a purpose.
Still, their unease was thick. The Elves of this kingdom held their library as more than mere record. It was the living memory of their people. Every scrap of history, spells and teaching, was etched here to ensure nothing of their past would be lost.
Letting strangers sift through it felt like desecration to a lot of them.
But King Thalrion had not hesitated. When asked he had only answered that these two were not threats to the kingdom and they were searching for something else beyond the concerns of Elves.
What he did not say, not even to his closest advisors, was that he suspected these strangers themselves might be Dragonborn. He had read between their words, the weight they carried in their expression, and the faint pull of ancient power behind their presence.
But to speak it aloud would be disastrous. His people would panic and panic led to chaos. Better to let them believe the strangers were merely scholars from some faraway land and just let them grumble in silence.
At a wide oak desk deep within the library, Eccar groaned, leaning back until the chair creaked beneath him.
A massive tome sat open before him, dense with Elven script. He rubbed his temples.
"We don’t find anything," Eccar said.
"Yet," Krono corrected without looking up, his voice calm as ever. He sat cross-legged on the floor beside a stack of scrolls and unfurling one of them with steady hands.
Eccar let out a heavy sigh and threw his head back dramatically.
"Do we really need to search one by one? Can’t you just... I don’t know, use your power to sense them? Find their hiding place or something?"
Krono’s lips curved faintly, though his eyes stayed on the parchment. "They are not so easily found. If a Dragonborn does not want to be discovered, even I cannot pierce their veil. Especially if they know about me."
Eccar leaned forward again, scowling at the endless sea of ink on the page.
"And you can’t just see which book has what we need?"
"I already did." Krono placed one scroll aside and picked up another. "The materials I’ve chosen for us are narrowed down to closest to what we seek. You think I’d waste my time with records of crop harvests and weather logs?"
Eccar grunted, muttering under his breath. "This still feels too much to me."
"Stop whining and keep looking."
"Damn... fine, fine." Eccar dragged the book closer again, his finger tracing the lines of text as he forced himself to keep reading.
The quiet stretch was filled only by the crackle of torches and the faint flutter of pages.
Then, after several minutes, Eccar froze. His eyes widened slightly, his finger stopping on a line.
"Wait... here. I think I found something."
Krono lifted his head, his gaze sharpening.
"Show me," he said.
Eccar leaned over the book and read aloud slowly. "It’s a record about a mysterious flying creature. Witnesses described it as big, winged, and shining like steel under moonlight. It was sighted only once, hundreds of years ago, near the northern cliffs."
Krono rose and crossed to the desk, peering over Eccar’s shoulder. His eyes scanned the page, lingering on the description.
"A creature like that... it could be them. Perhaps it was a Dragonborn in full form, but it also could be something else."
"But this is something that looks like us. I think we got a lead," Eccar said quickly.
"Yes. This is something worth following." Krono’s tone was calm, but there was a spark behind his words. "Not every Dragonborn stays hidden entirely. Sometimes, they test the edges of the world. A flight like this could have been such a moment."
Eccar turned the page, finding more notes.
"The Elves at the time thought it was some spirit of the sky, a messenger from the gods. They didn’t chase it and just recorded what they saw." He frowned, tapping the margin where faded runes described the direction it flew. "North. It’s always in the north."
Krono straightened, his expression thoughtful. "If it were a Dragonborn, then that’s where it would be hiding. The North was said to be an uncharted mountain on the record I’ve read. That may be our trail."
Eccar snapped the book shut with a grin, his fatigue lifting. "Finally! Took us days but we’ve got something."
"Be patient," Krono reminded, though even he seemed slightly more alive than before. "This is only a thread. Whether it leads to truth or nothing we won’t know until we follow it."
Eccar leaned back again, exhaling slowly. "A thread is still better than nothing."
Krono nodded.
Eccar and Krono were soon to meet King Thalrion again. The Elf King dismissed his attendants and led them into a private chamber lit by soft lanterns of glowing crystal.
The air was quieter here, heavy with the weight of secrets. They sat across from him at a low, polished table.
Krono spoke first, his tone steady. "We have found a lead. A record of a winged being sighted centuries ago. We will head north to follow it."
Thalrion studied them with calm, unreadable eyes, then inclined his head.
"So be it. May the forest watch your path. But I want my best scout to come with you."
