Chapter 1001: Departure

"Come with us?" Eccar asked, his brows knitting together.

"Yes," King Thalrion replied, nodding with a faint smile tugging at his lips. "I already told you that I am curious about your matter. Of course, I will not indulge myself too deeply into it. I simply want to know more about the Dragonborn, for you are the most mysterious beings I have ever heard of."

Eccar and Krono exchanged glances.

Eccar shrugged after a moment. He was clearly unconcerned. He didn’t really care if the king wanted to send someone along. For him, the matter of Dragonborn was too large for any outsider to truly interfere with.

Even if they tried they could not change its course. This was much bigger than them.

Still, as always, Eccar let Krono make the final call.

Krono remained silent for a while, his eyes locked on the king. Then he gave a faint smile.

"I think it is acceptable, Your Majesty. Your scout may come with us. But I must remind you that this matter may be too much to handle, even for you. Forgive me if my words offend."

"Haha." King Thalrion laughed, a deep, easy sound. "I am not offended. The reason I have ruled this long and built a kingdom so vast is because I know what is best for me. I know when to press forward... and when to step back."

Krono and Eccar both nodded at that, exchanging another look between themselves, each satisfied with the king’s answer.

"Then I think everything is settled," Krono said. "We will be leaving your kingdom after this, I believe. Before that, we want to thank you for your generosity."

"You won’t come back here?" King Thalrion asked, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"There is a great possibility that we will not," Krono admitted, his tone carrying a weight Eccar noticed. "But I cannot say for certain."

His voice carried a strange finality, almost as though he could glimpse a future he could not entirely speak aloud.

King Thalrion studied him for a moment, then gave a slow nod. "Very well. I will prepare my scout soon. When will you depart?"

"Tomorrow, Your Majesty," Krono said.

"Then tonight I will send you a feast," King Thalrion replied warmly. "Take it as my gratitude for you have allowed me at least a small taste of satisfying my curiosity."

He stood and extended his hand.

Krono and Eccar shook it firmly, offering a nod of respect, then left the chamber and returned to their lodging.

When the night fell, the king stayed true to his word. Servants arrived while bringing them trays of food and pitchers of fine Elven liquor.

There were a lot of variety of foods like roasted venison glazed with honey, golden bread, fruits as bright as jewels, and steaming bowls of fragrant herbs filled their table.

The servants even though they looked polite, still cast cold glances at the outsiders, their faces stiff as they laid everything down.

However, Eccar and Krono merely thanked them and wasted no time. They dug into the meal with fervor. Their faces lighting up with delight at the flavors.

"I like the king here," Eccar said between mouthfuls, grinning as he reached for another cut of meat.

"You like him just because he gave you food?" Krono asked dryly, sipping from a silver cup.

"That is true," Eccar admitted cheerfully, "but it’s also because he knows how to hold himself. He doesn’t pry too deeply even though he rules the largest kingdom in this world. With all his power he could have forced himself into our business. But he didn’t. That’s the kind of king I can respect."

Krono gave a small nod, saying nothing further. Yet in his silence his thoughts stirred. There were thoughts of futures unseen and burdens not meant to be shared for now, and of how quickly even a wise ruler could be swept into the storm to come.

When the dawn stretched its pale light across the kingdom, the streets were quieter than usual.

The air felt heavy with anticipation as Krono and Eccar stood near the eastern gate, waiting for the scouts King Thalrion promised to send. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Soon, two figures emerged from the shadows of the stone archway, their steps light bur also sharp, carrying an air of command despite the modest attire that marked them as forest scouts or rangers rather than royal soldiers.

Eccar’s lips curved into a grin the moment he recognized the woman leading them. Her fierce eyes that looks as sharp as blades left no room for doubt.

It was the same Elf who had captured them days ago, dragging them into the presence of the king without hesitation or fear.

"So, you’re the one he sent?" Eccar asked with a mocking tilt of his head, his smile broadening as if amused by fate.

"Yes," the woman replied curtly, her voice carrying no warmth. "My name is Lyrel. This," she gestured to the tall Elf man standing at her side, his stance as unyielding as hers, "is Caelthar. We will be accompanying you. Our task is simple: to observe, record, and to report. Do not expect our aid when you fall into trouble. That is not our concern."

Eccar let out a scoff, folding his arms across his chest.

"So, you’re here to watch us and write it down in your books. Sounds fun." His grin widening just enough to needle them further.

Lyrel’s eyes narrowed, her hand flexing near the hilt of her short blade but she didn’t rise to the bait. Caelthar, however, fixed Eccar with a glare of cold disdain.

Before either side could push further, Krono cleared his throat. His gaze cut to Eccar, a silent demand for him to shut his mouth.

Eccar chuckled then quieted.

"Very well," Krono said. "We understand your role. We will not demand what you cannot give. Now, let us move. Show us the way out of your kingdom."

Lyrel nodded once while Caelthar turned without a word.

Together they led the Dragonborns through the winding paths of the Elven capital.
