Chapter 989: Approval To Stay

Krono inclined his head in a measured bow. "Yes, Your Majesty."

King Thalrion’s eyes narrowed slightly, the faintest crease forming between his brows. His expression wasn’t anger nor was it welcoming. Rather, it was heavy as if the weight of unexpected news had settled on him before he could be ready for it.

Slowly, he leaned back on the table, fingers tapping lightly against the table while his gaze studied Krono and Eccar in silence.

The chamber felt colder for a moment. The quiet stretching is tight.

At last, his voice came. "I will be honest. I cannot claim to understand much of what you speak... for I have never go to another world myself."

A brief, almost wistful smile flickered over his face before it vanished behind his regal composure. "Tell me, then, what is it you seek here?"

Eccar noticed it in that instant. There was a glimmer beneath the king’s controlled demeanor. Not suspicion or hostility... but curiosity.

The kind of curiosity that could open opportunities for them.

"We are searching for something of great importance," Krono replied, his tone even, though there was a gravity to his words.

The king’s gaze sharpened. "And what is it?"

Krono’s answer came almost like a secret carried on the air. "A Dragonborn."

The reaction was immediate. King Thalrion’s posture changed. His eyes widened just enough to show how surprised he was.

The great hall seemed to draw in a breath. Eccar’s heart thudded in his chest. This could be the moment when they were accused of lying.

But instead, the king’s voice carried quiet astonishment. "There is... a Dragonborn in this world?"

"He doesn’t know?" Eccar thought, the realization sharp and strange.

"Yes, Your Majesty," Krono confirmed. "We have no name, location, or trail. Only the certainty that they are here. As this is the largest and most influential kingdom in this world, we hoped you might be willing to help us find them."

King Thalrion’s eyes fell to the polished floor for a moment, his brows knitting as he considered.

A twenty seconds silence followed. Finally, he looked up again with resolve in his gaze.

"I will help you. But I must warn you that I have no knowledge of where to begin. And I cannot share this with my people. The panic it would cause could make a mess quickly."

Eccar exchanged a quick glance with Krono. This was turning out far easier than he’d expected.

"That is enough," Krono replied with a faint nod. "If possible, may we have access to your royal archives and stay here for several days?"

"Of course," the king said, his tone softening, a hint of warmth was on his expression.

Eccar, unable to resist, added, "Forgive me, Your Majesty, but you seem to place your trust in us rather quickly."

The king studied him for a moment, then gave a small, knowing smile.

"From the moment you entered this hall, I knew you were not ordinary men. You may look like humans but you are not and you are strong. I would not wish you two as my enemy. And... I am curious about this Dragonborn. I want to know more."

Eccar’s grin was faint but genuine. "Then it seems we share a purpose."

"That we are," King Thalrion replied.

King Thalrion’s gaze lingered on them for a moment longer before his expression shifted into one of quiet focus.

Without rising from his seat he closed his eyes briefly, lips moving in near-silent words.

Eccar felt a faint ripple in the air as though the king’s thoughts had reached out beyond the walls.

Moments later, the great doors opened again and the three Elves who had escorted them earlier stepped into the hall.

They approached, boots soft on the polished floor, stopping a respectful distance away.

The fierce-eyed woman at their head asked, "What do you require of us, Your Majesty?"

"You will escort our guests to the house prepared for their stay. Just beside the palace," Thalrion said evenly.

The three froze for half a heartbeat, their expressions showing a clear shock. None of them had expected the two strangers to be given quarters, let alone so near the heart of the kingdom.

Still, they did not question the order.

"Yes, Your Majesty," the woman replied with a tight voice.

Turning back to Eccar and Krono, Thalrion’s tone softened. "You may rest for now after your long journey. I will have food brought to you shortly."

Krono rose and offered a small, respectful bow. "Thank you for your generosity."

Eccar stood as well, giving a faint grin in place of formalities. Then, under the watchful eyes of their escorts, the two followed them toward the doors.

Behind them, Thalrion remained at the table. His gaze lingered on the polished wood with his thoughts turning inward.

After a quiet pause, a small knowing smile curved his lips and he gave a single decisive nod. Whatever had settled in his mind was now certain.

In the corridor, the three Elves led the way, their pace brisk. None of them spoke but the weight of their annoyance was clear, especially from the fierce-eyed woman.

Her glances were sharp and at last she broke the silence. "What did you say to my king that made him grant you a place here?"

Eccar’s grin returned, edged with amusement. "That’s not your business."

Her eyes narrowed and her eyes turned from suspicion to open hate.

Eccar’s smile only broadened at the sight, a spark of mischief in his eyes.

Krono, walking just ahead, shook his head helplessly.

They soon arrived at a two-story wooden house. Its design matching the elegant style of the palace but smaller in scale.

From its position Eccar noted it was close enough for the king to summon them quickly or for the guards to watch them easily.

"This is where you will stay," the fierce woman said curtly. "Food will be delivered shortly."

"Thanks," Krono replied simply.

"Appreciate it," Eccar added with a flash of a grin.

Without another word, the three escorts turned and walked away, leaving the two of them standing at the threshold of their new quarters.
