I Reincarnated to Another World as a Woman-Chapter 227: Shadow Self
In a dark, empty room, a man sits on the floor.
His knees are curled up to his chest, his face buried between them.
His arms circle his legs tightly.
The man is hugging himself, as if that is the only thing anchoring him.
Silence.
No sound.
No wind.
No heartbeat.
Nothing.
Silence.
The man doesn’t know how long he has stayed like that.
Time feels meaningless here.
There is no sun to rise, no shadow to stretch, no breath to count.
He is away from the world.
Away from the pain.
Away from his past.
Away from his present life.
Away.
The silence is supposed to give him peace.
But it doesn’t.
It is supposed to give him relief.
But it doesn’t.
It is supposed to give him space to breathe.
But it doesn’t.
It gives him nothing he wants.
Suddenly, he breaks out of his curled position.
His head snaps up.
His chest heaves.
He shouts into the void, his voice cracking as it echoes back at him.
"You LIED!"
His voice reverberates, swallowed by the darkness.
"Death is supposed to give me peace and relief and a safe place!"
He clenches his fists, shaking.
"But it doesn’t! It’s nothing but empty promises!"
His scream tears through the silence.
"You LIED!"
The man is Theo.
------------------------------
Theo is heaving from his outburst.
His chest rises and falls erratically, breath scraping against his throat.
His eyes burn with rage.
Rage born from betrayal.
From being lied to.
His body trembles as he tries to rein it in.
Fists clenched so tightly his knuckles ache.
Jaw locked.
Teeth grinding.
His lips twist into a shape that is almost a sneer.
Almost.
Suddenly, a shadow appears to his left.
Not a blur.
Not a flicker.
A presence.
Theo’s head snaps toward it instantly.
The shadow moves closer, slow and unhurried, as if it owns this place.
As if time bends around it.
When the face steps into the dim light, Theo’s breath catches.
It is him.
But not.
Younger.
Sharper.
Eyes filled with anger that has never been restrained.
A mouth shaped into a constant, mocking curve.
Shadow Theo.
"Why do you hold your anger back?" the shadow asks casually.
"You always do that. It’s not healthy."
He tilts his head, studying Theo with open amusement.
"Let it all go," Shadow Theo continues.
"It’ll free you."
The smugness on his face is unmistakable.
Theo doesn’t answer right away.
He studies the shadow carefully, every instinct screaming at him to be cautious.
He does not trust this thing.
"What are you?" Theo finally asks.
His face is neutral.
His tone flat.
Shadow Theo chuckles, the sound echoing strangely in the empty space.
"Why, I’m you, of course."
He spreads his arms slightly, as if presenting himself.
"I’m the fun you."
He winks.
"The you that you wished to be for so long."
"The one who doesn’t hold back."
"Doesn’t put other people first."
"Doesn’t give a single damn about anyone else."
He leans closer, eyes gleaming.
"I’m the one who takes care of us."
Shadow Theo dances around him, light on his feet, circling him like a predator that knows it already owns the space.
"I’m the one who’s been suffering too much because you keep holding yourself back."
He shrugs casually, as if this is nothing more than an observation.
"I get it. Don’t worry. I really do. But it’s not healthy. You have to let me out and play every now and then."
Theo swallows hard. His throat feels tight.
He knows what this is.
This is the afterlife, but not the end. Not eternity. A place between.
A place where he cannot move forward unless he faces everything he buried.
He must resolve it. All of it.
He must accept this version of himself.
Shadow Theo is not an illusion.
It is one side of him.
Theo closes his eyes and takes a slow, steady breath.
It is not going to be easy.
"I’m sorry," Theo says quietly. "You’ve suffered. And thank you. For always taking care of me. Even when you were hurting."
Shadow Theo bursts into laughter.
Loud. Unrestrained. Almost mocking.
"I can’t believe this." He wipes at his eyes like he is genuinely amused. "Are you serious right now?"
He steps closer.
"Did you just apologize to me like I’m some stranger?"
He tilts his head, grin sharp.
"Don’t you know I’d know if you were sincere or not?"
His smile fades slightly.
"And you most definitely were not sincere. You were just saying it so you can move on."
He shakes his head slowly.
"You can’t lie to me, Theo. I’m you. Remember?"
Theo opens his eyes. Annoyance flashes across his face, quickly followed by frustration.
"Then what do you want?" he snaps.
Shadow Theo exhales, the sound almost tired.
"What do I want?" he repeats softly.
He looks at Theo again, this time without the grin. Without the teasing.
"I want you to be honest with yourself."
He steps back and spreads his arms.
"What do you want?"
Shadow Theo’s expression turns somber, uncharacteristically serious.
"What do you want, Theo?" he asks gently.
He takes a step closer.
"Tell me."
Silence.
Theo stares at him, unable to speak.
The silence stretches.
Shadow Theo does not interrupt. He does not mock. He simply waits.
Theo’s body starts to betray him. His fingers twitch. His shoulders tense.
He looks away. Anywhere but at Shadow Theo.
Still, Shadow Theo waits.
He only blinks, patient. Innocent.
Theo clenches his fists.
Then unclenches them.
Clenches them again.
His breathing grows uneven.
He takes a deep breath.
"I..." he starts, then stops.
His voice catches.
"I... what do I want?" Theo exhales shakily.
"I don’t know," he whispers.
Shadow Theo remains silent.
Still watching.
Theo swallows again.
He never realized how difficult this question is.
He has ignored his own wants for so long that they feel foreign. Dangerous.
His chest tightens.
"I..." His breath hitches. "I want..."
The words refuse to come.
His hands shake.
"I want to be free," he whispers at last. Barely audible.
Shadow Theo’s eyes sharpen.
"What was that?" He leans in, turning his head slightly, as if offering his ear. "Say it again."
Theo lifts his head.
"Free," he says louder. His voice steadier now. "I want to be free."
