Chapter 148: Esme Returned

***Author’s Note: Peep the comments for a picture of my bedroom. Let me know what you think? It’s super small so I had to get crafty with all my things. I like things, so I collect a lot ***

~AMBROSE’S POV~

Seeing Odette so torn up was soul raking. I hated that I had to leave her.

Onyx hated me for leaving her.

But I had too.

Esme returned. She was battered, broken, and currently wolfless. I had to check on her.

The way she looked at me when I left. It was too much to bear. I felt like I was betraying her by leaving her in this state.

But I had too.

I walked my way to the infirmary, where they were holding Esme.

And when I saw her on the bed like that. Rage boiled under my skin.

She was sickly pale, the wounds on her body were festering. She hissed with pain every time the doctor touched her. I bit down hard restraining myself from snapping at the doctor.

"She’ll be okay, she’s injured badly, but the severity is from a reaction to a high dose of wolfsbane. And not life threatening, her wolf will come back, she’s only wounded, not dead. Our Esmerelda is lucky."

"No, she’s skilled and trained. She’s been microdosing toxins of all kinds since she decided to be a spy for me." I corrected the doctor. None of her surviving had anything to do with luck. It was all her.

Pride swelled in my chest.

"When will she wake up?" I asked the doctor.

"Up to her. Her body and wolf are both tired, she might sleep until her wolf wakes. She might wake up tomorrow and ask for a bowl of chowder. Who knows with her." The doctor knew her well. All of us well, actually. He’s been all of our primary attendee since we were kids. Esmerelda never gave a problem and lived on soup when she was small.

Damon was sitting in the corner, his nervous energy clouding up the room.

"Go take a walk." I told him. Knowing he won’t listen.

"Sorry Alpha, even if it were an order, I’d disobey it. You know what she means to me." Damon said low.

I did.

She meant a lot to all of us.

She was the baby of our group.

Our little sister.

"Brothers." The words shocked us both. When I turned around Esme was sitting straight up in her bed looking at us both with glassy eyes.

We scrambled over to her, taking her into our arms.

"You’re okay?" We both asked urgently.

She nodded.

"How’s your wolf? Is she back?" I asked.

She looked down sadly and shook her head ’no’.

"You should have let us extract you sooner." I said firmly. Not like her King, but like her concerned older brother.

But she furrowed her brows and shook her head firmly ’no’.

"Esme."

She shook her head ’no’ even firmer.

"Stop you two, she just woke up, she’s wolfless and has been tortured. She’s more stubborn than you. Wait to grill her until she delivers you her report." Damon snapped at the two of us.

"Fine."

She looked at me with knowing eyes and without words I knew she was asking about Odette.

"She’s a friend." I answered her.

She frowned.

"I’m not lying, tell her Damon."

"He’s not lying, she is a friend. But he’s not telling you the whole truth either." Damon smirked.

"You snitch." I crossed my arms and glared at him.

Esme matched my moves but glared at me instead.

"All will be explained."

"I know who she is." Esme whispered.

"Yes, she’s the Vampire Princess."

Esme shook her head ’no’.

"She’s a goddess." Esme spoke her words firm and clear. Clearer than usual. Speaking more than usual. I don’t think I’ve heard this many words from her in one setting ever.

"How do you know that?" I was shocked by her realization and recognition.

"Sense." She said low.

"You could sense her?"

Esme nodded.

"What do you mean by sense her?" I was curious, could others sense her now?

She shrugged her shoulders.

"What do you mean you don’t know?"

She shrugged her shoulders again.

I groaned "Well, at least you don’t hate her."

Esme shocked me with what she asked for next.

"I want to see her."

Damon and I both snapped our necks and looked at her with surprise "You want to see her?"

Esme nodded.

"I’m sure I can arrange that." And with those words, I saw Esme smile. Not with malice or sinister plotting. Like I expected.

But with excitement.

"But you have to get better first. Get your wolf strong." I instructed, giving her a goal was always the way to motivate her.

She nodded firmly.

"I’ll have new clothes brought to your room, when they release you, you know where to go." I turned and looked to Damon, "I’m going to check on my other soldiers, tomorrow morning, meet me in the meeting chambers. We have much to discuss."

"Yes, Alpha King Ambrose."

"I’ll excuse myself now, Esme, sleep." I left the room after that.

My soldiers who were injured had been released. They were all well enough to return home, no one was seriously hurt. Good.

When I returned to my room, I saw Phera by the bathroom door scratching at it.

When I opened the door, steam fogged my vision and the overwhelming sent of strawberries and mint filled my senses. I let it wrap around me, soothing me.

"What is my future Luna doing sleeping on the floor?"

"Waiting for her King to sweep her off her feet." She smiled sweetly at me.

Her eyed were red and puffy from relentless tears.

I did just that. I scooped her into my arms and brought her naked wet body to the bed.

"Lay with me?" She asked.

"Always, babe."

"I like it when you call me babe." She whispered.

"I like you." She giggled at my cute confession.

"You’re scent changed. It smells more like... Mint."

Mint? She smells mint in my smell too.

"I could say the same. Strawberries and Mint."

"Is it because of the bond?" she asked the question I had been wondering myself.

"It makes sense that it would be, a bond is a soul pairing, right? So, it makes sense wed smell something new and it would be the same." She answered both our questions with a reasonable answer.

"Why do you think we didn’t smell it at first when we sensed the bond?"

"Maybe, because I hadn’t accepted it yet? The same with our connection strengthening" She pulled me in closer, curling into my chest.

She was so small in my arms. Hard to believe this body carried the soul of a goddess.

"Makes sense to me." I agreed with her speculation. "You should rest now."

She nodded and without argument she closed her eyes and snuggled into my chest.

I don’t know how long we laid like this but it wasn’t long before sleep claimed us both.
