Chapter 131: Chapter 131

I didn’t know much about Adrian Lerin’s life, he was only a minor character I wrote in my novel, his goal was to steal the Mana Essence which he failed to do, thanks to me.

As I recalled, he was a Halfling, part Rogue, part human because he sold a fragment of his soul to gain power. To become a full Rogue, though, he needed the interest of any Demon god who would offer him a contract.

"Noblesee Codex," I murmured, letting the words hang in the air as I took a deep breath.

In an instant, my spectral seal flared to life; my eyes began to glow with a golden hue. Strands of blue, luminous thread twisted together, intertwining and forming a book hovering before me.

This was my first genuine attempt at invoking this power; the last time had been cut short by an unexpected interruption.

"Adrian Lerin." I focused, wanting to learn more about him before investigating the person he wanted for me to look.

Immediately, the book opened, and the blank pages began to fill with text, letters forming slowly as if drawn by an invisible pen. Information poured out—Adrian’s background, his abilities, and bits of his history. Each word brought me closer to understanding the young man I had previously dismissed.

————————————

Name: Adrian Lerin

Age: 25

Sex: Male

Race: Half Rogue—Half human

Class: Thief

Ability: Clone Decoy

Adrian possesses the remarkable ability to create mini clones of himself. These clones can engage in combat and create distractions, effectively confusing enemies about his true location. This ability allows him to manipulate situations in his favor, often allowing him to escape or gain the upper hand in confrontations.

Background: Adrian’s early life was marked by trauma and darkness. At the tender age of five, he witnessed a horrifying event: his mother killing his father while Adrian hid in a closet, paralyzed with fear. This traumatic experience left deep scars and formed his desire for vengeance. By the time he turned 18, seeking power and a way to escape his past, Adrian sold a part of his soul and embraced his Halfling lineage. Driven by the need for revenge, he joined the Shadow Society to find his mother and avenge his father’s death.

Residence: Shadow Society Headquarters, underground of Adriana.

Now that I gathered enough information about his, I decided to look for Evangeline Lerin. I only got a quick glimpse of her whereabouts before my Spectral Seal began to blink uncontrollably as the Noblesee Codex started to glitch. The next thing I knew, I was on the floor, visibly exhausted.

[Did you forget? Don’t overuse the Noblesee Codex and your Spectral Seal at the same time or your mana will run out faster.] The system mockingly displayed its message at me.

"How could I forget when in the first place, you never mentioned it to me!" I shot back, irritation rising.

The system was silent for a moment, as though contemplating my complaint. Finally, it replied, [That’s not my fault. You should have read the instructions more carefully.]

I snarled at the system, "And where were you when I called you last time, huh? You wimp!"

Our bicker continued to move back and forth. As we were busy, Macaron, who was awakened by our loud voices, rolled his eyes at us. With a sudden shift, he transformed into a larger shape, just big enough to easily carry me. He then slowly grabbed me using his claws and gently laid me down on the bed.

Macaron returned to his normal form and nestled against me, a soothing warmth emanating from his feathery body. He was now immuned by the ongoing bickering and just went back to sleep again.

"Maybe I should train my stamina more," I muttered, glancing sideways at Macaron, who seemed to blink sleepily in response.

[I just wanna say before you sleep, it’s definitely your fault why you immediately ran out of mana,] the system chimed in, interrupting my thoughts yet again.

I clenched my teeth tightly, struggling to restrain my retort. ’And now it’s passing the blame back to me! D@mn you!’ I thought, my frustration simmering beneath the surface.

Before my blood pressure could rise any higher, I forced myself to sleep. Oh right, the last thing I remembered before the Noblesee Codex fade away was the name—Evangeline Lerin had changed her name to Erina Gassos.

Our summer break finally came to an end. As I sat in the bustling classroom, the voices of my classmates filled the air, their stories about exotic travels and thrilling adventures swirling around me like a whirlwind.

"Did you bring any souvenirs for me?" one voice chirped excitedly.

"I saw your pictures on Slogram. I’m so envious you went to Caosia!" another added, their tone laced with longing.

"Ahh if only my passportal didn’t expire, I would have gone to Zypheria!" came a lament from a corner of the room.

"My parents were strict of me! I could only travel places in Aeonia!" someone else chimed in, their words laced with frustration.

All those who came back to the Academy seemed to have enjoyed their break as they all had bright faces. While the only places that I’ve frequently been to was the park, training facility, and my dorm.

Bored, I pulled out my phone, scrolling through a feed of their sunny smiles and picturesque landscapes. I couldn’t even bear to look at the constant stream of posts celebrating their adventures. My head was down so I didn’t even notice that my friends were already seated next to me.

I wasn’t really paying attention to anything until Instructor Jude walked into the classroom that I looked up. Seeing that I was the only one who noticed him, he slammed on his desk loudly and the room immediately fell silent.

"Today marks the start of a new semester. As you all know, this new semester comes with a big change. Not only will your rankings be different, there will also be other transferees joining the class, so be nice to them," he announced, his eyes scanning the room.

"These are the transfer students that will be joining us starting from today." The instructor’s words were followed by a round of applause as he welcomed the new students.

The front door swung open, and a group of 30 students walked in, their faces a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I wasn’t particularly interested in them, but then my eyes landed on a familiar figure.

I recognized him immediately as he was only wearing glasses and had cut his hair short. I couldn’t believe it. ’What’s Adrian doing here?’ I thought, my mind racing with questions. But most important of all, he wasn’t even trying hard to disguise himself!

"Everyone, take your seats," Instructor Jude instructed, and the transferees quickly looked for empty spots, settling down as the chatter faded. I watched as Adrian found a seat near the back of the room, he already looks bored.

Once everyone was settled, Jude opened his tablet and began reading off the new rankings. "Now, I will announce the new ranking."

"Rank 1: Remillia Lockhart..." he announced. I could feel the eyes of my classmates turn toward me, some filled with admiration, others with envy.

He continued, listing the top 10 one by one:

"Rank 2: Cypher Knoxx."

"Rank 3: Edge Killian."

"Rank 4: Ezekiel Craine."

"Rank 5..."

The room was silent, the tension building with each name.

"Rank 6..."

"Rank 7..."

"Rank 8..."

"Rank 9..."

"Rank 10: Whitney Owen."

Once he’d finished saying the top ten, he posted the rest of the rankings on the board. It was very satisfying for me. From the bottom rank, I had risen to the top rank. And I’m thankful for the system helping me review and study.

We went to change our uniforms into a different gear since our next class was Monster Hunting Class.

Arriving at the edge of the forest, Instructor Jude gathered us around, his demeanor shifting from light-hearted to serious. "There aren’t any dangerous monsters in this forest. But..." He held up his index finger, pulling a scary face that caused a ripple of nervous laughter.

"There are traps hidden everywhere. They’re replicas of what Rogues once used to kill Heroes. So don’t be reckless and die carelessly."

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at his warning. ’Really?’ I thought. As if anyone would actually die in a training exercise like this. If we stumbled into a trap, we’d probably end up with just a few bruises or, at worst, a quick trip to the hospital. As if anyone would believe what he said.

But I quickly realized I was mistaken. As I glanced around, I saw the wide eyes and anxious expressions of my classmates. Some were biting their nails; others were whispering nervously among themselves.

Next, he divided us into 23 groups of 10 people, each group standing at different starting points at the entrance of the forest. My heart thumped with anticipation.

"Once you hear the buzzer, you can now go," he instructed, his voice firm and authoritative.

Then—Bzzt!

In an instant, all of the groups surged forward simultaneously as we moved deeper into the forest.

"I forgot to tell them, this forest is also called Wailing Hollow." But the cadets already went on their way. He can only shrugged his shoulder, "Oh well, I trust that they return alive."
