Chapter 132: Chapter 132

Cypher and Angela belonged to Group 8, and not long after we had started exploring, an unsettling chill crept through the air. Goosebumps erupted on their arms as the wind picked up and the surroundings grew foggy—all of this happening when it was just 11:00 A.M. The forest had transformed into a haunting landscape, filled with an eerie mist that swirled around them.

Just the environment was scary and spooky enough, but there were also all kinds of traps just like the instructor said.

Sharpened poisoned bamboos suddenly sprang up from the ground, while razor-sharp arrows flew towards them from hidden mechanisms. Even unsettling ghosts appeared to frighten them, adding to the chaos.

Soon enough, all corners of the forest were filled with screams.

"Aahhh!"

"What the—frickin’ hell!"

"What’s that—bleurgh!"

"Disgusting!"

As a creepy double-headed ghost emerged, its intestines grotesquely dripping, the members of Group 8 suddenly fell to the ground, paralyzed by terror. Three of them couldn’t handle the gruesome sight and immediately vomited.

Angela furrowed her brow, wondering if the Academy was trying to give them nightmares to celebrate the start of school. She let out a deep sigh, placing her hand over her heart in an attempt to steady herself.

"This is becoming more of a haunted forest than just a normal training exercise," she muttered.

Angela and Cypher were leading the group, noticing that they were a bit farther from the others, she decided to take this a chance.

"Cypher."

"Hmm?" he asked, tilting his head in confusion. "What?"

She tried to act nonchalant as possible as she brought up something that didn’t have much to do with the current situation. "I know this is sudden but do you like someone?"

Cypher looked puzzled. "What? What are you talking about now? Did you accidentally inhale some shrooms on the way here?"

Angela smacked him lightly on the arm. "What shrooms? Just answer me."

"Well... I do like someone," he admitted, his tone shifting slightly.

Her heart palpitated as she steadied herself. "Is that someone... me?" she asked, glancing at him with hopeful eyes. But her heart sank when Cypher continued to look at her with that same baffled expression.

Angela laughed out loud, trying to mask her disappointment. "You should have seen your face! Hahaha! I was just joking with you! You know that we’re friends, right?"

Cypher smiled a little, ruffling her hair affectionately. "Of course we’re friends. You still like to play pranks on me."

But Angela’s smile was tinged with pain. ’But... it wasn’t a prank, though,’ she thought bitterly.

She quickly shifted the topic to distract herself from her feelings. "So... who’s this someone you like? Is she in our class? Do we know her? Does she also talk to you?" She felt a twinge of envy creeping in as curiosity took over.

"All I want to say is she’s in our class." Cypher replied, his gaze drifting slightly.

She started to confirm whether her suspicions were true. "Is she beautiful?"

"Of course," he answered, his cheeks tinging with a slight flush.

"Is she smart?" she asked, already feeling the hint of his answers.

"Yes," he nodded again.

"Is her hair long?" she continued, her heart racing as anticipation built.

"Yes."

"Is her hair black?"

"Yes."

"Is her name Remillia?" She finally blurted it out, her heart practically pounding out of her chest.

"Ye-what?" Cypher’s eyes widened as he turned to meet her gaze, realization dawning in his expression.

’So it’s true,’ Angela thought. I tried to deny it, but it seems he has genuinely fallen for her. A knot twisted in her stomach, battling the intense wave of emotions crashing over her.

Before Angela could gather her thoughts to respond, the rustling of a bush on the right suddenly caught her attention, and a familiar face popped out.

Speaking of the devil, it was Remillia’s Group 1.

As they decided to rest together, a sense of camaraderie settled over the group. Angela found herself chatting with the members of Group 1, trying to get to know them better.

"Trap? What kind of trap?" she asked, curiosity getting the better of her.

"It’s more of like a maze barrier," one of the transferees replied, adjusting his glasses as he recounted the experience.

Angela listened intently as he continued, "We had an easy time at first, just a few wild animals on our way. But then we accidentally triggered a trap, and it activated this maze barrier."

Suzette, another transferee, jumped in, excitement dancing in her eyes. "Yeah, I think we must have been circling in there for an hour! And just when we were about to lose hope, that woman who was quietly following us in the back suddenly moved forward, pushed aside our leader, and frustratingly ordered us to follow her!"

She pointed up at a figure perched on a branch, fast asleep—none other than Remillia, oblivious to the conversation happening just below her.

"At first, we were all like, ’How dare she just push us aside?’ But then the others shook their heads and urged us to just let her do her thing," Suzette recounted, her laughter echoing in the tension of the forest. "In the end, she really did lead us to the exit."

Yeager, the first transferee Angela spoke to, couldn’t help his curiosity. "By the way, who is she?"

"Oh, that’s... Remillia Lockhart," Angela said, a hint of pride creeping into her voice, though it was mixed with a touch of jealousy.

The transferees gasped in unison. "The top student?" one exclaimed.

"Sh!t, we really underestimated her," Yeager added, his eyes wide with surprise.

"So that’s why the others prevented us from challenging her," Suzette muttered, shaking her head.

Angela nodded silently. Remillia’s reputation definitely preceded her, and she could understand why. With her skill and confidence, it was no wonder the other students slowly notices her.

She quietly left the group, seeing that they no longer have something to ask and made her way back to her group. Tierra, an old schoolmate, walked up to her to ask something.

"Hey Angela, do you already have members on your squad?" Tierra asked, her voice friendly and nonchalant.

Angela paused for a moment, the reality hitting her with a jolt. She had completely forgotten about the upcoming squad quest. "Not yet," she replied, shaking her head slightly. freeweɓnovel.cøm

The squad quest was a long-standing tradition at the Academy, an event meant to test the skills and teamwork of students. However, it was typically kept under wraps until the last minute, which added to the anticipation and excitement.

Members for the squad quest had to be fair. As such, top-ranking students couldn’t team up to maintain fairness of the game.

"I’m thinking about asking Remillia later," Pierre Guerera interjected, catching Angela off guard. She jolted slightly, surprised by his sudden involvement in the conversation. Pierre had been quietly listening, but his voice sliced through her thoughts.

Cypher also spoke up, nodding in agreement. "She’s a good choice; it’s just sad that we can’t be in one team."

"You’re friends with her right?" Pierre asked them both as Cypher and Angela nodded.

Pierre laughed, seemingly pleased with the outcome. "I’m thankful you and Remillia are in the top ten, or else the other teams would have no chance against you."

Angela felt a twinge of irritation as she noticed Cypher’s expression brighten at Pierre’s flattery. She couldn’t help but feel that Pierre was being two-faced, like a sly fox charming his way into favor.

But Tierra was not impressed. "But why her?" Tierra asked, her voice dripping with jealousy. "I mean, she’s talented, but she’s always surrounded by bad rumors." Her eyes narrowed slightly. She thought to herself, Remillia just got lucky being number one. Everyone could do that if they put in more effort. She’s just a show-off. Not only that, she has no manners and doesn’t care about the rumors swirling around her acting as if the rumors were true.

On the other hand, Pierre was popular for a reason. Charming and a true gentleman, his abilities outshone many, and he was highly sought after by every guild. ’He should be picking me not that witch.’

"Everyone wants to have her on their squad. Not just because she’s top one, but she’s also good in combat. Have you already forgotten the one-on-one fight last semester?" Pierre countered.

Pierre looked at Remillia before shifting his gaze back to Cypher and Angela. "So the both of you, it’s okay for me to ask her, right?" he asked, voice brimming with confidence.

Angela quickly replied, "Of course." She felt a rush of relief at the thought that Cypher and Remillia couldn’t team up.

"Really? Then I should try asking her today." Pierre stood up, full of determination as he prepared to approach Remillia.

But before Pierre could make a move, Cypher spoke up, he was smiling as usual although there was something different in his tone. "...Wait. Remi’s really picky, so she might not say yes to you."

Pierre’s face fell, confusion and disappointment crossing his features as he looked at Angela for confirmation. "Huh? But Angela just said—"

Cypher continued, his eyes glinting with coldness. "You might get hurt if she rejects you, Pierre. She’s a bit... cold."

Tierra seized the opportunity to add fuel to the fire. "Cypher’s right. Haven’t you heard rumors about her?" Her excitement was palpable, as she leaned in, hoping to ruin Pierre’s view about Remillia.

Clearly, she was excited to bad-mouth Remillia. " You know she’s famous for her nickname as ’witch’ right? Some says that she bewitched her opponents so they could easily surrender that’s why she always win in every fight. When she was a kid, she was also known to be a thief, roaming around the streets. She just got lucky entering our Academy because she has connections in the criminal underworld. Heck, maybe she’s only top one because someone is paying the dean—"

The rumors spilled out of Tierra, exaggerating it while she can, clearly deluded by her own biased beliefs.

Unable to endure what comes out of her mouth any longer, Angela and Cypher interrupted simultaneously.

"Have you even talked to her just once?"

"Speak one more word about her and I’ll personally send you to the hospital."

Tierra’s bravado crumbled under the weight of Cypher’s threat, her voice trembling a little. "W-What? D-did I say something wrong?" she stammered, her eyes darting between them. She can sense the murderous intent that lingered in Cypher’s gaze but when she blinked again, it was gone.

Cypher clapped his hands and got up as if nothing happened. "Break’s over, we should get moving now."
