Chapter 148: Chapter 148

"If it isn’t Remillia and Caleo," Christian smirked. "The two of you are completely surrounded."

In an instant, Pierre aimed his bow and pointed his arrows directly at us. "He’s holding too many artifacts!" he exclaimed, clearly agitated by our possession of the objects.

A voice from their group chimed in, anxiously, "We must retrieve the artifacts from them before they could submit it to their extraction point."

Panic rose in my chest. I leaned closer to Kairos, whispering urgently, "I know you’re still injured, but you need to run. I’ll delay them as long as I can."

Kairos hesitated, glancing back at the approaching enemies. "I’ll make sure to be back!" he called over his shoulder as he sprinted away.

"Stop him! He’s escaping!" Ezekiel shouted, his voice slicing through the tension.

Pierre quickly released an arrow towards Kairos but I quickly threw a dagger to deflect the direction of the arrow, hitting one of them on the knee.

"Sh!t!" he hissed, collapsing as he pulled the arrow from his wound.

The other three wanted to chase after Kairos but Christian quickly commanded, "Don’t bother chasing him. We must eliminate Remillia now."

Pierre nodded, his eyes narrowing. "She’ll be a pain in the ass later if she manages to escape."

Feigning innocence, I regarded Ezekiel with big, pleading eyes. "Don’t you think that’s unfair for me?" Surely, as a member of the same squad, he would help me right?

Ezekiel paused, looking genuinely conflicted. "S-she’s right. What if we let her go just this once?"

Christian’s eyes widened. He had already seen this kind of reaction, especially his best friend. He had a feeling that she has also bewitched Ezekiel so he slapped Ezekiel across the face, shaking him hard as if trying to rattle sense back into him. "Snap out of it! That witch is casting a spell on you!"

When I heard Christian’s remarks, I can’t help but glare at him. "It’s been a long time since I heard that word used against me—except from Rex," I said, twirling my dagger in my fingers. "You haven’t forgotten what I said to you a while ago right?"

"Eeek!" Christian recoiled, holding up his hands in mock surrender. "I’m sorry! But charge her at once!" he shouted to his group.

"Eight against one? Really?" I shouted back incredulously, scanning the group of attackers.

Christian’s arrogance shone through in his smug smirk. "It’s supposed to be one-on-one, but we know how strong you are so we might as well attack as a group!"

"I swear I’m gonna enjoy eliminating you!" I shouted back, adrenaline surging through me.

"If you can!" he taunted, his laughter echoing in the air.

Since there were eight of them and every one of them are experienced in fighting, I decided to use my ability ’Serenade of Daggers’ and ’Retrieve’ automatically activating my Spectral Seal.

My fight against them were exhausting for me since they belong to the top 20’s rank in my class. I activated ’Serenade of Daggers’ and ’Retrieval’ at the same time to fight them.

With a flick of my wrist, five daggers flew from my hand, instantly multiplying aimed not just to injure, but to hinder their movements. However, their reflexes were suddenly sharper as they avoided my daggers with ease.

I forgot Pierre was on their side. As a support giving buffs to his allies and long range attacker, he’s an annoying enemy to deal with. I need a new strategy.

"Retrieve," I muttered under my breath as I summoned the daggers back to my grasp.

I immediately dashed towards them. I acted as if I was charging at the closest fighter, so they immediately tried to cover him as they waited for me to strike. But just as I closed our distance, I pivoted and hurled several daggers straight at Pierre.

Caught off guard, he fumbled, lowering his guard as he let his buffs dissipate to defend himself from my sudden attack.

"Protect our support!" Ezekiel shouted, urgency creeping into his voice as the rest rushed to intervene.

But they were too late. My daggers hit their mark, knocking Pierre down in one swift, precise strike as his wristband turned gray.

Now that he’s eliminated, I could finally move with ease.

"Now that you have no support, I can finally feel that this will be a fair fight," I smirked, a rush of adrenaline flooding my veins, but my glare was directed at Christian, who was agitated.

Christian gulped, the air thickened with tension as they focused on me, their expressions now serious and wary. I was aware that taking down their support was a significant blow, but I still had seven opponents in front of me, and I know they won’t go down without a fight.

With a swift motion, I readied my next attack, gripping the daggers tighter as the remaining defenders closed ranks. "Let’s see if you can handle this!" I taunted, launching myself forward.

Our fight was swift and ruthless, we were bleeding all over. My daggers found their marks with precision, and one by one, the remaining fighters fell until I was standing over the unconscious bodies of my opponents.

Finally, when it came down to just Ezekiel, Christian, and myself, I deactivated my Spectral Seal. We were all panting heavily as we pointed our weapons at each other—Ezekiel with his tomahawk Christian with his spear, and me with my daggers, waiting for someone to make the first move.

"Zeke, shall we call this a tie?" I proposed, raising my hands slightly to signal a truce.

"Deal!" Christian replied quickly, eager to back down.

"I’m not talking to you," I snapped, glaring at Christian. Did he think I’d forget what he had done so easily? Not a chance.

Christian grumbled under his breath while Ezekiel nodded, accepting the temporary pause in our fight.

"Let me eliminate him," I said, stepping forward to confront Christian about his earlier insults, but Ezekiel stopped me, blocking my path.

"I can’t let you do that," he insisted.

"But Zeke, I let him off the first time we faced off and besides, he annoyed the hell out of me a while ago!" I reasoned, pointing to Christian, who was currently sticking his tongue out in defiance.

"If I let you eliminate him, our team would have less members," Ezekiel replied, a hint of frustration lacing his voice.

"Choose," I warned, leveling my gaze at Ezekiel. "Either you let me eliminate that spoiled brat, or I’ll finish the two of you right now."

In the end, Ezekiel sighed, seemingly defeated, and stepped aside, letting me have my way with Christian. The betrayal in Christian’s eyes was visible as he looked between us, stunned.

"Why?" he wailed, a tinge of panic creeping into his voice.

"It’s your fault anyway," Ezekiel said flatly, turning his back toward us, realizing he had no way of stopping it.

I took a step closer to him. "Christian~," I sing-songed, tilting my head with a playful smirk.

His eyes widened as he backpedaled instinctively, raising his weapon defensively. "Wait! M-maybe we can talk this out?" He stuttered over his words, clearly regretting his earlier arrogance.

I was ready to eliminate Christian when someone beat me to it.

"Who stole my prey?!" I exclaimed, furious as I turned to see who had intervened.

It was Edge wearing a blue wristband, strolling calmly as he retrieved the spear he had thrown at Christian.

"This isn’t a playground, witch," he said, his tone serious.

I couldn’t understand this guy. Why was he always so annoyed with me?

"I was about to finish him off when you suddenly eliminated him out of nowhere!" I retorted, irritation spilling over.

"Also, why didn’t you kill that guy?" he asked, pointing toward Ezekiel, who was already running away from us.

"We had a temporary truce?" I replied defensively, raising an eyebrow.

With a heavy sigh, he leveled a serious gaze at me. "Witch... I don’t care if he’s your friend. But when it comes to missions like this, training or not, remember this one thing: an enemy is still an enemy. You either kill or be killed. Who knows? Maybe the ones closest to you will soon be your enemy."

I stared at him, taken aback by his words. Was he this serious when I wrote him as my character?

I decided to walk by his side and spoke, "Where are you going?"

He didn’t answer.

"I still have the artifacts I stole with me. Shall we head to our extraction point?" I pressed.

Nothing. Just silence.

Annoyance bubbled inside me. "If you’re looking for Angela, don’t bother; she’s a Defender..." I noticed he paused briefly before continuing on his path.

I suddenly remembered something. Wait, if she’s our enemy then should I try asking him what he said to me?

"Edge!" I called, quickening my pace to catch up. "If Angela’s an enemy, then will you also eliminate—"

I fell silent, catching the fierce glare he shot my way. It silenced me instantly.

Clearing my throat, I backed off. "I have a plan. You’ll be in charge of gathering our members and stalling our enemy as much as possible while I look for more artifacts."

He halted and, to my surprise, nodded at my plan.

I glanced at my watch; we still had thirty minutes left. "We separate here. Make sure to draw attention away when you see spot me roaming around—prevent them from protecting the artifacts."

With a mutual understanding, we went our separate ways.
