Chapter 153: Chapter 153

Sunday, 10 AM.

Just like at the basketball match, a large crowd had already gathered at the stadium, their energy buzzing in anticipation.

The Shadow Brawl Tournament was a single-elimination competition. The Academy invested heavily in hiring mages who cast obstructive spells to hinder the contestants’ movements. But the main reason was to provide something for the audience to watch making the tournament far more exciting viewing than merely watching contestants defeat each other.

The hired mages would then prepare obstructive spells inside the stadium. The spells they casually conjure were thunderstorms, trigger earthquakes, alter temperatures, summon low ranked monsters, and lay hidden traps throughout the arena.

Upon entering the stadium, the contestants are not allowed to carry their weapon with them and the mages would cast a blindfold that blinds the contestants every two minutes. Once the competition starts, the contestants would rely on their instincts to open chests scattered around the stadium, which holds random weapons or traps. The competition would only end if one contestant was unable to fight any longer.

I stifled a yawn as I wait for my turn to fight. I woke up late but I managed to enter the competition and won two rounds, securing my place as one of the finalists. While I waited, I turned my attention to the audience, who were eagerly chattering and cheering.

The Academy Class Festival was a point of pride for all first year students, particularly for those in the Agastia class, who were favored to win due to their impressive track record and outstanding students.

As I scanned the crowd, I noticed an unusual number of mages in attendance. ’What’s happening?’ My curiosity piqued, I focused to who they were looking and I saw someone in the VIP observatory overlooking the stadium.

Before I could identify who the person was, a voice boomed through the speaker system, cutting through my attention:

[This is the final round of Shadow Brawl! The two remaining contestants, please step out!]

I stretched my body to shake off any lingering fatigue and stepped outside.

Meanwhile, in the VIP observatory, Yohan Bediah1 sat back casually, his gaze fixed on the stadium below. The space was lavishly adorned with decorations and an array of fine food, all prepared in honor of the esteemed Elder Mage’s presence.

During a break, an enchanter-ranked mage who had volunteered to be his attendant approached him. "Mister Yohan, is that guy down there your cousin?"

"Hmm," Yohan grinned, still looking down at the stadium. Part of the reason for his visit today was to see his cousin, and he couldn’t help but notice how well he had grown. He stood out particularly because of the girl by his side.

"Their duel is starting," the enchanter remarked, glancing down at the stadium.

"I just need to continue doing what I did before, right?" Yohan replied nonchalantly, flicking his wrist as a torrent of rain suddenly poured down over the stadium.

"Yes, but the obstacles have to be the same for both contestants," the enchanter reminded him, a hint of caution in his voice.

Yohan chuckled lightly, an amused gleam in his eye. "How could I do that? I have a weakness for anyone that ties to me."

The enchanter laughed awkwardly. "Ahem... ahaha.... Well, I’m sure it’s doesn’t matter what you do. Do as you wish, Elder Mage..." He offered a nervous smile, clearly reluctant to oppose Yohan’s whims.

There was good reason for the enchanter’s hesitance. Elder Mages were regarded as the same level as the Elite ranked Heroes. In a structured Academy like this, where class competitions held multiple events, offering a single competition as a bribe wouldn’t cause much of a stir.

In fact, having this Elder Mage as a guest lecturer in exchange for this favor could bring a monumental advantage to the Academy.

"If you say so," Satisfied, Yohan smiled, his demeanor reflecting a gleeful mischief as he watched the rain began to turn into a storm and a lightning struck exactly where the girl is standing.

However, just before the thunder could reach her, an earthquake rumbled through the stadium, shifting her to a safer position.

Yohan’s smile vanished. He tried to struck the girl again but he changed his spell when he saw his cousin was about to be swallowed by a quicksand, he quickly transformed it into water.

’Who would dare try to oppose me?’ he thought, recalling his high rank among the mages present. He was the most powerful one here, and he wouldn’t allow anyone to undermine his authority.

"Is there anyone else in charge of casting spells here?" Yohan asked, his voice low and dangerous.

The enchanter began to sweat, sensing the icy atmosphere in the room. "U-um, y-yes... Apart from you, we also invited Archmage Gusion Eresby," he stammered.

Yohan clenched his jaw, the name igniting a spark of anger within him. "Gusion, huh? Where is he?"

The enchanter pointed a trembling finger towards the window. "A-apparently, Archmage Gusion is on the other side of the VIP observatory."

Yohan turned to look and saw Gusion waving and smiling back at him, although he knows that Gusion is only faking it. He can’t help but remember the past again.

When the decision to become Elder Mages was made, Yohan had quickly accepted the title, but Gusion had chosen to remain an Archmage without telling the reason why.

Back when they were about to be announced as Elder Mages, he willingly accepted the title but Gusion decided to stay as an Archmage.

The Magic Tower’s members had long forgotten Yohan in favor of discussing why Gusion had rejected the title while whispering behind his back about how shameless he was for accepting the Elder Mage title despite not matching his strength to Gusion.

In a fit of anger and despair, Yohan left the Magic Tower, traveling to other countries to grow stronger, always with the sole reason of surpassing Gusion.

In anger and despair, he decided to leave the Magic Tower and went on different countries to be more stronger than Gusion.

He glanced back at the girl in the arena and then smirked at Gusion, resolve building within him. Now that he had returned, he would prove that he was stronger than that bastard, especially in front of the mages that had once doubted him.

As soon as I stepped into the stadium, I was immediately blindfolded. Though I could still perceive my surroundings, I pretended to be disoriented and walked around cautiously.

The mage in charge casted a rain spell which later escalated into a thunderstorm. I tried to look for chests when a flashing white light temporarily blinded me.

BAM!

The ground trembled as I barely dodged a lightning strike; the shock of the near-miss sent a shiver down my spine. I was lucky—an earthquake rumbled through just in time, shaking me into a safer position.

’What the f*ck?! Are they trying to kill me?’ I shuddered at the thought. This was more intense than the last round I fought.

After the two minute mark passed, my blindfold got removed and I finally recognized who my opponent was. Lukas Bediah of Seofon Class.

"Wow, you’re good at avoiding lightning," he greeted me, a smirk playing on his lips as he pointed to the singed marks on the ground where I had just been.

’Why was I almost hit with lightning while he just got splashed by a puddle of water?’ He looked so relaxed. The use of obstructive spells between us were very much different.

I glanced up at the VIP observatory against the darkened sky and used my skill. So he’s really here. Yohan Bediah.

’This arrogant punk. Just because his cousin is overseeing this contest, he thinks he can manipulate things in his favor.’ Since the start, I was thinking to give up being the winner but because he’s cheating, I might as well cheat also.

Before I could search for a weapon, the countdown ended, and the blindfold was placed over my eyes once more. I had to act quickly, scanning for any hidden traps while maintaining the façade of being blind.

I moved forward, my senses on high alert as I searched for the chests while bracing myself for another magical assault.

Just when I spotted a chest and was about to approach it, the ground erupted in a sudden spray of vines that are full of thorns, ensnaring me in their grasp like a constrictor snake.

I gritted my teeth, trying not to scream as pain shot through my body. I needed to escape, but without any weapons, I was left trying to pry at the vines with my hands, which only seemed to make things worse.

Before I could injure myself further, blue flames suddenly surrounded me. My heart raced; thinking that Yohan might gonna burn me alive but to my surprise, the flames scorched the vines binding me, allowing me to break free.

Something was off, though. Yohan wouldn’t help me unless it benefited him, which meant someone else was aiding me. But who should that be? I shook my head as I try to concentrate my problem first.

My eyes darted toward Lukas, he seemed to have found a weapon already.

It’s pronounced as Be-da-yah
