Chapter 172: Chapter 172

For the next two weeks, the group focused intensely on training. They threw ourselves into workouts, sparring sessions, and endurance drills, pushing their bodies to their limits and exhausting their aura and mana as much as possible.

"Huff! Huff!"

Heavy panting filled the empty area in front of the abandoned building as they exerted theirselves. Nearby, Rex was locked in a sparring match with Cypher. The two of them moved like well-rehearsed dancers, exchanging blows with a rhythm that had developed over a week of training.

Clang!

Swoosh!

The sharp, metallic sound of their swords colliding echoed through the makeshift training ground. Rex felt like his hands were going to explode from the effort, but he didn’t lose focus. Cypher, with a fluid motion like flowing water, struck low and then followed with a swift crossway slash that left Rex barely able to react.

"Huk!" Rex gasped as Cypher’s blade found its mark, pushing him back and off balance.

"Ha... Ha... I lost," Rex admitted, raising his hands in surrender and collapsing onto the ground, his breath coming in heavy gasps.

Whitney, acting as the referee, brandished a small piece of cloth that she had transformed into a white flag. "Rex 0, Cypher 10!" she declared, her voice carrying authority.

"... Since when did you become a referee?" Rex grumbled as he got up, dusting off the dirt that clung to his clothes before stepping back to catch his breath.

Whitney ignored his protest, her focus shifting. "Edge! You’re next!" she called, her voice ringing with enthusiasm.

"What’s our score?" Edge asked with a confident smirk, stepping into the makeshift ring.

Whitney glanced down at her notes, tapping the piece of paper thoughtfully. "Cypher 10, Edge 5!"

Edge glared at her, disbelief etched across his face. " Hey! Are you writing it correct or not? It’s 5 wins, 5 draws, and 5 losses!"

"Just get in the circle!" Whitney snapped back, her tone leaving no room for argument.

With a reluctant nod, Edge stepped into the sparring area, his appearance shifting to one of focus as he squared off against Cypher.

As they began their match, Whitney shifted her gaze to the other side and noticed Angela and Christian sparring on their own. They were deep in concentration, exchanging strikes with each other using their own weapons.

She could see them making good progress too. Angela’s movements were becoming sharper, her attacks more precise, while Christian utilized the lessons he’d learned to effectively dodge and counterattack.

Vroooom!

Suddenly, a loud noise echoed through the air, alerting everyone as Cypher, who was in the middle of sparring with Edge, stopped and turned his head in the direction of the sound. "Looks like Remi is back," he said, recognizing the familiar noise of Remi’s bike.

Clang!

Seizing the opportunity, Edge attempted to attack Cypher while his focus was diverted. The quick strike was aimed at Cypher’s side, but it caught him off guard and connected. However, Cypher was quick on his feet and managed to pivot, meeting Edge’s blade with his own, the clashing sounds rang in the morning air.

"Hey!" Cypher shouted, there was a competitive glint in his eye.

"Maybe you should keep your head in the game instead of worrying about noises," Edge replied smugly, his confidence shining through as he pressed the attack.

Meanwhile, the rest of the group paused their training, turning to watch Remillia approaching them.

Ever since being pulled into the past, Remillia was in charge of food supply.

They began to detest themselves for drooling whenever they heard the sound of her bike’s engine. Because she always brought back something delicious, it was as though they were already trained to react subconsciously.

"Hey witch! What did you hunt for today?" Rex shouted when a bike finally appeared.

Remillia parked her bike inside the abandoned building and covered it with a blanket.

Cypher who can’t wait to meet Remillia, abandoned his sparring with Edge as he scurried up to her like a puppy that was waiting for his owner to come back home, then brought back the icebox from her bike.

"I’m hungry~" The rest also got up and followed Cypher. Inside the icebox were eggs, wild boar and chicken that are already skinned and ready to cook.

Cypher and Christian took charge of cooking as they prepared our meal. I had secretly pulled out essential spices from my expansion pouch, hoping to add more flavor to our dish. Soon enough, the air was filled with mouth-watering aromas as Cypher managed to cook a delicious pork belly and a perfectly roasted chicken.

In the year 2030, even ordinary stream water had a higher concentration of mana and magical power than what we were used to in the present. As a result, food cooked with it was not just flavorful but also immensely nutritious. Just by eating and sleeping here for five months, one’s mana capacity and aura could increase by at least 20%. Of course, that benefit was best achieved when combined with physical activity afterward.

"Ah, I almost don’t want to go back. How come the foods are all delicious here?" Rex whined, staring forlornly at the empty dishes in front of him, as if they could somehow magically refill.

"You should quickly get back to sparring," I replied, unable to suppress a smile at his exaggerated expression.

"Quick question," Christian interrupted, frowning slightly as he rubbed his sore arms. "My body hurts every time I use mana."

Whitney chimed in, her brow furrowed. "Me too. It feels like it’s difficult to breathe and get my body to move the way I want it to."

I glanced around at the others. "What about the rest of you? Do you feel the same way?"

"A little," Angela said, nodding in agreement with Rex.

"None for me," Cypher remarked confidently, who seemed perfectly at ease.

"Me too," Edge added, crossing his arms with a smirk, clearly buoyed by his own abilities.

"Hmmm," I pondered, taking in the varying responses. "Edge and Cypher don’t have any issues with using their mana anymore because their bodies have started adapting to the mana in the environment here." I turned my gaze to the others. "As for the four of you, it seems you’re still struggling a bit. I’d suggest that you use more of your mana and exhaust it repeatedly."

"But isn’t that risky?" Whitney asked hesitantly, biting her lip.

"That’s precisely the goal," I explained. "The more you push your limits, the faster your bodies will adapt to the higher mana concentration. It’s uncomfortable now, but the adaptation will lead to longer-lasting benefits. Think of it like training your body to run faster or lift heavier weights. It won’t feel good at first, but over time, it will be worth it."

Christian looked uncertain but nodded slowly. "I suppose that makes sense."

Moreover, because this place was isolated from present time, we weren’t chased on time. Even if we stayed here for a year, only an hour would have passed in the real world.

However, that didn’t mean we could stay here for long.

The system updated me that if we don’t hurry up and complete our mission to go back then we would be stuck here as this world would slowly erode.

"Alright guys, listen up," I clapped my hands to draw their attention, feeling the weight of leadership settle on my shoulders. "We’re going to start attacking them five days from now. After all, we can’t stay here forever. So I’ve prepared a plan."

They nodded, their expressions shifting to one of seriousness.

"We’ll focus on their weakest points first and aim to take two of the glass shards in one go," I detailed, pulling out the map I’d made. I traced my finger across the marked locations. "We’ll begin at the old marketplace and the abandoned library. We’ll split into two groups and ambush them at night."

Five days later, late at night, we split into two teams, just like we had planned.

Edge and I formed one team to go at the old marketplace while the other five would venture off at the abandoned library.

Of course, Edge and Cypher vehemently opposed it, but I insisted. I felt comfortable teaming up with Edge.

"We’ll go first. If you can’t clear the mission in two hours, just escape and return to base," I instructed firmly, glancing back at the rest of the group.

I hopped on my bike and waited for Edge to join me. He climbed on awkwardly, clearly unsure of riding behind someone. As he fumbled for something to hold onto, his hands accidentally brushed against my butt. The moment his touch registered, he shuddered in surprise.

"Fuck, what am I supposed to hold on to?" Edge said irritably, trying to mask his embarrassment.

"Just hold on to my shoulders," I replied, my tone light.

"..." He hesitated, clearly unsure, but eventually, his hands barely made contact with my shoulders.

"I should be the one riding with her; why did Remi choose him anyway?" Cypher grumbled from a short distance away, casting us a look tinged with envy as I stomped on the accelerator.

The bike roared to life, taking off like a bullet. It surged from 0 to 100 in less than a second. The force of acceleration had Edge’s hands instinctively shifting; they quickly transitioned from my shoulders to a tight grip around my waist. I didn’t care—speed was essential, and we needed to reach our target quickly to aid the other group..

Twenty minutes later, I slowed the bike as we entered a dense forest near our target location. "We’re here now, so can you let go of me?" I said, glancing back at Edge who still had his eyes closed, still hugging me tightly.

"Ehem! R-Right!" He quickly replied, practically jumping off the bike as if it were on fire, his cheeks slightly flushed as he tried to play it off like nothing had happened.

I transformed the bike back into its bracelet form and wore it as we set off on foot, moving carefully through the underbrush.

As we stealthily made our way toward the target, Edge broke the silence with a question. "Hey, is there a reason you and I had to go together?"

"Uh, well..." I trailed off, trying to formulate my thoughts.

I hesitated, considering the truth behind my choice. The real reason was simple: Cypher wouldn’t try to kill people, even though the inhabitants of this world were merely manifestations of the Rogue’s curse. I interned my thoughts, realizing that Edge could be more ruthless and decisive if the situation demanded it.

"So?" Edge pressed, waiting for my answer.

"Shh. Look," I finally said, gesturing for him to lower his voice while pointing towards the distance.

An old marketplace could be seen in the distance.
