Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 136: Your Relationship, No One Can Come Between
"What is there for her and me to talk about?" Hearing Linden Nathan’s words, Cecilia Nathan’s heart filled with disappointment.
She knew Sharon Quincy had been there for Linden Nathan over the years, but it still hurt to see him protect Sharon so thoughtlessly.
But then again, if it hadn’t been for her own "indifference" over the years, Sharon wouldn’t have had the chance to worm her way in.
"Cecilia, no matter how you look at it, Sharon is a victim too. The police are investigating, and they haven’t found anything, so what you’re saying is just speculation."
"Speculation? Is it also speculation that she impersonated me and almost married Damian Hawthorne?" Cecilia’s voice was as placid as still water.
Linden Nathan paused. "She told me about that. She said it was to provoke you into contacting me. And as it turns out, you did contact me and see me because of it..."
Cecilia suddenly laughed.
’So all the terrible things Sharon Quincy did have been twisted into something good.’
"My friend is missing right now. If he’s still alive, I can let this go. But if something has happened to him, Sharon Quincy must pay the price." After she spoke, Cecilia’s tone grew colder. "If you still insist on protecting her then, it will just mean that our relationship as father and daughter ends here."
"What are you saying, Cecilia? You’re my biological daughter. No matter what, Sharon has no blood relation to me. As for that missing friend you mentioned, don’t worry just yet. Wait until you see Sharon tomorrow, and you two can have a proper talk."
Thinking of Finn Hawthorne, Cecilia took a deep breath. "Fine. We’ll meet and talk tomorrow. I’d like to see how she’s going to talk her way out of this."
With that, she immediately hung up.
She glanced around and, seeing that no one was looking at her, turned and walked back into Damian Hawthorne’s hospital room.
Just then, Damian Hawthorne was on a video call with someone.
"Damian, are you really going to marry that... that May Rhodes? Are you insane? Do you even see me as your mother? Why wouldn’t you discuss something so important with me?"
"What’s the point of discussing it with you? You wouldn’t have agreed anyway," Damian said, his voice full of impatience.
Hearing this, Frances Bennett was so angry she was gasping for breath. "Of course I wouldn’t agree! On what grounds does a mere caregiver get to marry you? If I had known it would come to this, I would’ve rather you married Cecilia..."
Seeing Cecilia Nathan standing at the door, Damian Hawthorne ended the call without a second thought.
"Done with your call?" Damian tossed his phone aside and rubbed the bridge of his nose.
Cecilia nodded dazedly.
’She was still wondering where Finn Hawthorne could have gone.’
Just then, a shriek suddenly came from the doorway.
"Oh my god, he’s so handsome."
"Isn’t that the famous star, Miles Sinclair? What’s he doing here?"
"Who’s that woman with him? And she’s got a huge belly! Man, I really got the latest scoop."
Listening to the comments from outside, Cecilia clenched her fists.
Ever since she and Miles Sinclair had parted ways last time, she had been ignoring all his attempts to contact her.
Now, hearing his name, Cecilia’s heart felt like it was suddenly in turmoil.
Justin Bell walked to the door and peered out. "That pregnant woman looks like the one who’s been close to Miles Sinclair. The baby in her belly... it couldn’t be his, could it?"
After saying this, he subconsciously glanced at Cecilia.
Cecilia pressed her lips together and said nothing.
Damian Hawthorne spoke with a sneer. "Well, this is interesting. One minute he’s chasing after you, the next he’s got a kid on the way. That’s a bit too fast, don’t you think?"
"Usually, a baby bump only starts to show around four months. Maybe she was already pregnant when those pictures were taken..."
Justin Bell was about to say more, but when he saw Damian Hawthorne look at him, his lips twitched, and he trailed off.
Cecilia lowered her eyes, trying to force herself not to think about it, not to look.
But she couldn’t stop her eyes from darting a glance outside anyway.
Miles Sinclair was supporting the young woman beside him, his face etched with worry.
As if sensing someone’s gaze, Miles Sinclair looked up, and his deep, dark eyes froze for a moment.
Cecilia quickly averted her gaze.
A moment later, having presumably settled the pregnant woman, Miles Sinclair walked briskly toward them.
Justin Bell tried to close the door, but Miles Sinclair pushed it open first. "Cecilia, don’t misunderstand..."
"I’m not misunderstanding anything." Cecilia let out a slow sigh. "Miles Sinclair, that’s your life. Whatever you do has nothing to do with me anymore."
"It does have something to do with you! Okay, Cecilia, I’ll tell you the truth. She’s my buddy’s girlfriend, but my buddy got married... so he asked me to help." After explaining, Miles Sinclair sighed slowly. "I know you don’t believe me, but she’s not mentally stable. The baby she’s carrying has nothing to do with me. If you don’t believe me, I’ll get her to come over..."
"Miles..."
Suddenly, a gentle female voice cut in.
Leaning against the bed, Damian Hawthorne stood up as if he had just discovered a new world. He crossed his arms and let out a soft whistle.
"Tsk... The show’s about to begin."
Cecilia looked at the young woman, her brow furrowing slightly.
The woman before her had fair skin and large eyes. She wore a short, padded jacket, and her belly protruded slightly. In person, she looked even prettier than in photos.
"Hello, Cecilia. I’m Quinn Sutton." The woman graciously extended a hand to Cecilia. "I think there must be some misunderstanding between us. Miles already told me about it, but since you’re here, it’s better to clear things up face-to-face."
"Miles and I are just friends. The baby I’m carrying isn’t his; it belongs to his friend." At this, Quinn Sutton’s eyes suddenly reddened as if she’d remembered something painful. "The one who let me down was his friend, not him. He was just accompanying me to my check-up."
"Miss Cecilia Nathan, I know your and Miles’s story. Don’t worry. With the bond you two share, no one can come between you." Quinn Sutton looked at Damian Hawthorne, a slight smile playing on her lips. "Not even Mr. Hawthorne."
Damian Hawthorne’s lips twitched.
’What a stupid woman, dragging me into this at a time like this.’
"Cecilia, everything she said is true." Miles Sinclair stepped forward, trying to take Cecilia’s hand, but she gently sidestepped his grasp.
"I know." Cecilia smiled faintly. "The Miles Sinclair I know isn’t that kind of person."
Hearing this, Miles Sinclair let out a long sigh of relief.
Suddenly, a cold snort echoed. "Fool. People change."
Miles Sinclair’s expression turned cold. He lifted his gaze to Damian Hawthorne, his lips curling upward slightly. "Yes, they do. Mr. Hawthorne here is quite changeable himself, having almost married three different women in a single year."
’Three women. One was Serena Hughes, one was Sharon Quincy, and the last one...’
"Since Mr. Hawthorne is about to marry May Rhodes, are you still planning to monopolize our Cecilia?" Miles Sinclair put his hands in his pockets, a sarcastic smile on his face. "When it comes to the phrase ’people change,’ you’re the last person who has any right to say it."
’Marriage?’
Cecilia froze for a moment.
"You’re getting married?"
Cecilia’s lips parted, her voice trembling slightly.
’Damian Hawthorne is getting married? To that May Rhodes?’
’When he said May Rhodes had been busy lately, did he mean she was busy preparing for a wedding?’
Cecilia then recalled the phone call Damian Hawthorne had just been on.
"No. You can’t marry her."
