Ignored When Chasing: Why Cry After I Got Engaged-Chapter 137: Who Is Her Father?
The atmosphere instantly grew awkward.
"Why?" Damian Hawthorne narrowed his eyes.
’Why...’
Cecilia Nathan looked down, stammering, unsure of how to begin.
Meeting Damian Hawthorne’s suspicious gaze, Cecilia took a deep breath and said, "Marriage isn’t a game. You two haven’t seen each other in so long. It’s very likely your feelings have changed. I think you should reconsider."
Logically, who Damian Hawthorne married was none of her business. But for some reason, her first reaction upon hearing he was going to marry May Rhodes was resistance.
"May is practically the one who saved my life. She wants to get married, so I can agree to it."
"The one who saved your life..." Miles Sinclair let out a soft laugh. "Cecilia, you’ve seen it for yourself. You were by his side for so long, and he wouldn’t marry you. You’re pregnant with his child, and he won’t take responsibility. And now, he’ll marry just anyone who asks..."
CRASH! The cup in Damian Hawthorne’s hand fell to the floor, cutting Miles Sinclair off.
"Sorry, my hand slipped." Damian Hawthorne shot him a sideways glance. "You should worry about yourself first."
"Since Mr. Hawthorne is getting married, he should let our Cecilia go instead of making her take care of you, freeing up time for your future wife’s wedding."
Cecilia’s heart clenched.
’No wonder Damian Hawthorne called me over. He wanted May Rhodes to be able to focus on the wedding preparations.’
Damian Hawthorne looked at her, his expression unreadable.
"My eyes were injured because of her, so it’s only natural that she takes care of me. Miles Sinclair, you should focus on handling your own family matters." After speaking, Damian Hawthorne cast a meaningful glance at Quinn Sutton’s stomach. "You two coming to the hospital today will definitely make headlines. What kind of position will that put Cecilia in? Or have you already given up on your relationship with her?"
"No, I..." Miles Sinclair turned to Cecilia anxiously. "Cecilia, you believe me, right?"
"Mhm," Cecilia Nathan nodded.
Damian Hawthorne snorted. "What a fool."
"Just get out of here. I’m sick of looking at you."
After he spoke, as if a switch had flipped, he kicked over the nearby trash can.
Cecilia Nathan walked out of the hospital room, and Miles Sinclair followed.
"Cecilia, are you looking for someone? I know some people abroad who specialize in finding people. They can usually get results in three hours. Do you need me to contact them...?"
Before Miles Sinclair could finish, Cecilia stopped in her tracks. "Okay. As long as you can find him, money is no object."
"Don’t talk to me about money." He turned to Quinn Sutton beside him. "I can’t accompany you to the rest of your appointments. I’ll call Sean. You should probably tell him about the pregnancy yourself." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎
Quinn Sutton nodded and smiled at Cecilia. "I’m sorry, Miss Cecilia Nathan, for the misunderstanding. Miles Sinclair is a really good person. He’s waited for you for a very, very long time. I hope you can give him another chance."
Cecilia Nathan’s lips curved into a smile, but she said nothing.
After Quinn Sutton left, Cecilia remembered what Linden Nathan had said. "I’m meeting my father tomorrow. If you’re interested, you could meet him."
Hearing Cecilia mention her father, Miles Sinclair’s expression turned complicated. "Your father... is it appropriate for me to meet him?"
"It is. There’s been a misunderstanding between you two as well. I think it’s time to clear it up."
As Cecilia left, Miles Sinclair smiled faintly. Just then, Justin Bell happened to walk by. Seeing Miles, he lifted his chin slightly. "Mr. Sinclair, what are you doing here?"
"I just heard Miss Cecilia Nathan say she was going to have you meet her father. I seem to recall she’s an orphan. So where did this father come from?"
Justin Bell’s words were pointed.
He could read lips. Although Cecilia’s voice was low, he had managed to guess part of the conversation.
As Damian Hawthorne’s assistant, lip-reading was just one of his many skills.
Miles Sinclair’s smile vanished. "Didn’t you know Cecilia has always had an adoptive father?"
’An adoptive father...’
Justin Bell felt that something wasn’t quite right.
He had looked into Cecilia Nathan’s background before and found no information about an adoptive father.
But regardless, it seemed Miss Cecilia Nathan was formally planning to have Miles Sinclair meet her family.
This was a level of treatment that even their Mr. Hawthorne had never received.
It was clear at a glance who was more important in Cecilia’s heart: Miles Sinclair or Damian Hawthorne.
Justin Bell hesitated for a moment before deciding to report this to Damian Hawthorne.
After hearing Justin Bell’s report, Damian Hawthorne narrowed his eyes, a chill seeping into his gaze.
"You’re saying Cecilia is taking Miles Sinclair to meet her father?"
"Yes. Not an adoptive father, but her father." Justin Bell was also full of suspicion. "President Hawthorne, I remember that Miss Cecilia Nathan’s adoptive father died long ago. She’s now preparing to have Miles Sinclair meet her father. Who on earth could this father be?"
"No matter who it is, the fact that she’s willing to have Miles Sinclair meet her family means she approves of him." A coldness laced Damian Hawthorne’s every word.
"Exactly. Miss Cecilia Nathan is so strange. She was with you for so long and never introduced you to any family. How is she so close with Miles Sinclair... President Hawthorne, could it be that all the affection Miss Cecilia Nathan showed you in the past was fake?"
The moment Justin Bell finished speaking, he felt Damian Hawthorne’s gaze, sharp as a knife.
"I... I didn’t really mean it like that. I just find it strange. Besides, for Miss Cecilia Nathan to say that, it’s as if her father is right here in Korsyth." At this, Justin Bell had a sudden realization. "President Hawthorne, Miss Cecilia Nathan... she couldn’t actually be Selina Nathan, could she?"
If Cecilia was Selina Nathan, then everything would make sense.
"We’ll find out soon enough if she is. Have someone follow her wherever she goes tomorrow. I want to see just who she plans on introducing Miles Sinclair to."
Damian Hawthorne thought about how Cecilia had opposed his marriage to May Rhodes.
When the news broke that he might marry Serena Hughes, Cecilia had only been sad for a while, but she hadn’t resisted it as strongly as she was now.
’Cecilia, just how many secrets are you hiding...?’
The next morning, Cecilia Nathan dressed simply.
She wore a simple black down jacket that completely enveloped her figure.
The light makeup on her face gave her a healthy complexion, and her hair was tied up in a simple bun, looking both fresh and elegant.
Just then, her phone suddenly rang.
It was Miles Sinclair.
Cecilia answered. On the other end, Miles was silent for a few seconds before taking several deep breaths, as if he were nervous.
"Cecilia, I have news about that man you asked me to find, Finn Hawthorne."
A tremor ran through Cecilia’s body, and her palms began to sweat.
"Tell me. How is he...?"
"Cecilia, whatever I’m about to say, no matter the outcome, you have to be able to handle it."
"Okay." The rims of Cecilia’s eyes were already turning red.
"About Finn Hawthorne... we found his body. We found it with the police. The autopsy hasn’t been done yet, so we have to wait for the results." As soon as Miles Sinclair finished speaking, Cecilia’s head spun.
