Chapter 170: Smashing Some Crystal

The Crystal Goblin in front of me was certainly a fascinating and unique looking monster, and the longer I stood in front of it the more enamored I became with its... well, everything; it was such a beautiful looking thing, but that long, jagged crystal club that was attached to its arm was seriously dangerous.

It looked like it was carved from a giant block of sapphire and imbued with a visible power that pulsed within its chest like a heartbeat; the constant brilliance being radiated around itself as it shuffled forwards was as beautiful as it was deadly.

The air around it was somewhat heavy, while my skin tingled and moistened a little as I lunged forwards to get into melee range, which was definitely... something; thankfully there wasn’t any electric based monsters nearby because otherwise this would be really bad...

Swinging the mace overhead and aiming for the somewhat elongated skull, I put as much power into my swing as I possibly could muster and prayed that the defenses of this monster wouldn’t be as high as some of the other monsters I was used to fighting in this area back when I was grinding hard.

These were among the weaker defensively, but they hit hard as a truck whenever you didn’t one shot them or restrain them, so I was really hoping that this mace was as strong as Professor Bo’Katari had told Lu’Shaki it would be...

That green hue I had given it complimented the sapphire monster in front of me so well, and by the time my weapon was smacking down against its skull the Crystal Goblin had only begun to swing its club, meaning I had the time to dodge if I felt I needed to.

The instant it connected I was showered in a storm of blue crystal shards as a large chunk of its head was cracked to pieces, though unlike normal flesh and blood monsters the Crystal Goblin was more similar to a construct, which meant that everything creating this monster was... ’unneeded’.

What needed to be destroyed were one of the two large dark crystal orbs within that crystalline shell, and sadly the one located in the head was just an inch or two deeper than what I had managed to smash into pieces.

It still staggered thanks to the hit, and I knew just by looking at it that the monster had taken a large amount of damage, but it wasn’t enough to kill it nor was it enough for me to let my guard down.

That crystal club was still right there waiting to be swung, and although it had been stunned for a moment I was very much waiting to see it fly towards my side in retaliation, so I took a few steps back and adjusted my grip on the mace.

In the second or two that I gave myself away from the monster, I got to see that Lu’Shaki had no such problem as she just swung that giant two handed hammer like it was nothing, blasting the head off of one of the Crystal Goblins and cracking the other into two pieces with a devastating blow to the chest.

Somehow my partner managed to kill two of these Crystal Goblins whilst I had only managed to smack one over the head... it honestly made me a little embarrassed, but there wasn’t a lot of time to care about that since that crystal club was being raised once more.

Since it was moving just a bit slower than I was, I had no issue at all moving away from its projected swing and slamming the mace down onto its shoulder, deciding that I should harvest some crystal now rather than wait for later.

That crunch that came as the green mace cracked against the blue crystal was actually kind of nice to listen to, and since there was no blood nor any pained gasps or screams I felt... fine doing this; it was like facing a training dummy and not a monster.

In place of the blood though was a flow of blue mana that dulled the remaining crystalline shell a little, so before it could ’suffer’ too much I just whacked it in the head again and destroyed the dark crystal orb that kept it alive.

"How much of this stuff do we want?"

Seeing me breaking the arm into smaller pieces, Lu’Shaki prepared to help me before just shrugging as I handed her a stab resistant pouch that was now filled with sharp slivers of blue crystal.

"We don’t need a lot; the use for Water Mana Crystals isn’t that abundant in Alchemy, so I would rather save the space for the other elements. They still sell for a decent price, but these should be low quality..."

"Makes sense. I’m going to assume we’re looking for the red ones then? Isn’t that the most utilized element for Alchemy?"

"Yes, at least for low quality. Anything we get that is medium grade or high grade is going to be taken regardless, but when we find weak crystal monsters that are made from Fire Mana we’re going to need to harvest them completely. They make excellent ’kindling’ for potion brewing."

I gathered up a second pouch and tied it to my waist, during which Lu’Shaki snickered and said "That’s kind of morbid to think about, isn’t it? Using some dead monster parts to heat up other monster parts with some herbs...", which made me chuckle as I shrugged.

"It’s just how it goes. Now, we have a little bit to go, and I want to save our energy, so... head down, keep close, let’s get there without drawing that much attention, alright?"

She nodded and pat me on the butt twice to let me know she was right behind me, and for a brief moment I was ’worried’ that she was going to want to do even more and slow us down, though thankfully she just followed right behind me quietly.

The giant cavern was so gorgeous to look at, and all of the other students and Professors were dismantling the monsters with ease as they made some quick money, so there weren’t that many monsters lingering around looking for something to fight.

When we left this cavern behind and entered into one of the long pathways between the many caverns though we were immediately face to face with another set of Crystal Goblins, but this time they were a mixture of blue and red.

The two that were red stood tall and had rather sinister serrated blades instead of clubs, and sometimes the crystal that comprised those weapons sparked or ’bled’ embers, suggesting a rather scalding temperature on top of being quite sharp.

As for the three blue Crystal Goblins, they had those same clubs as before, though for this confined space they were even more deadly since they were able to cover most of the area in front of them with just a single swing.

That left little space for us to work with, but thankfully we weren’t in a narrow corridor, just in a smaller space than before; there was enough room for us to fight side by side and still have more room to spare, so there wasn’t as much of a worry as I initially expected.

"Just fight around me, Natalie. Let me take all of their attention and then you swoop in and land a blow here or there, alright?"

The armored Orc suddenly seemed so much larger than I had ever remembered as she spun the hammer around in her hands excitedly, keeping her blood flowing before stepping forwards and swinging it wide.

It was a crude attack but it served its purpose well, batting one of the Water Crystal Goblins into the Fire Crystal Goblin behind it, staggering the two and taking out a decent chunk from the blue one.

The other two blue monsters shuffled forwards with their clubs raised, but Lu’Shaki was quick to swing the hammer again, cracking it down into the skull of the middle one before ’stabbing’ the hammer into the neck of the remaining one, knocking it back a few steps.

I used that to get close and slam my mace into its blank face, relying on the already damaged neck to tear its head off of its body as I killed it thanks to Lu’Shaki’s opening attack; the other Fire Crystal Goblin wasn’t just waiting around though, and I barely managed to throw myself back as that crystal blade sliced through the air in front of me.

It even managed to cleave through the now inert blue crystal of its dead ally, and hearing the crystal fizzle and pop as the heat melted it a was rather terrifying, especially since that blade was coming for me again.

This Fire Crystal Goblin was definitely as fast as I was, so I was able to dodge to the side and cause the blade to just squeak past me, opening it up to an immediate - yet definitely not that powerful - counter attack as I swung my mace up into its arm.

It served its purpose though and bought me the precious seconds to retreat behind Lu’Shaki, who was far better than I was at this whole smashing crystals thing... and because of that I was given the rather obvious reminder that she was an Orc.

And Orcs really did like to smash things... if that was abundantly obvious with what I was already doing with her, but being shown that she was capable of literally smashing things to pieces with a grin on her face...

It made me look forwards to getting ’smashed’ again, that’s for sure.
