Chapter 48 - 42 Don't pay attention to him, he is stupid.
The desserts at the sushi restaurant were just as good as the internet claimed—so good, in fact, that even Geto Suguru found himself taking a few extra bites.
"Gojo-kun, are we really just ignoring Yamashita Ryo?" Conan adjusted his glasses, turning to Gojo with a puzzled expression.
"Relax. As long as he's still in Tokyo, he won't escape my sight," Gojo Satoru replied, stuffing another bite of dessert into his mouth. His words came out slightly muffled. "Trust me, Yamashita Ryo is still at the police station."
"Huh?" Conan tilted his head, eyes wide with disbelief.
"Well, each sorcerer and cursed spirit has a distinct aura," Geto Suguru explained gently. "Satoru can track them using cursed energy."
After a brief pause, he turned to Gojo. "Are you really not going to tell the sorcerer world about Yamashita Ryo?"
Gojo scoffed. "Those fossils in the higher-ups move too slow. By the time they act, Yamashita Ryo will be long gone."
Geto opened his mouth to respond but stopped himself. He didn't know much about sorcerer politics, so it was best not to comment. Still, he couldn't quite understand why someone like Gojo, born into one of the three great families, held such contempt for the upper ranks.
"Yeah!" Conan nodded in agreement. "Yamashita Ryo was already questioned once. Even if he has an alibi, he'll probably leave Tokyo just to be safe."
"Conan!" Ran Mouri's voice rang from the restaurant entrance. "You skipped school all morning! Your teacher called the detective agency!"
Conan tensed, instinctively shrinking into himself and trying to hide behind Geto Suguru. Not that it worked.
Ran scanned the restaurant, quickly spotting the boy cowering behind Geto. She stormed over, hands on her hips.
"Since you're staying with the Mouri family, we're responsible for you! How can a student just ditch school and follow Dad to crime scenes all day?"
"Sister Ran, I was just hungry!" Conan protested, eyes wide with innocence. "Uncle Mouri can't cook, so I had to come with my brothers to get some food."
"Really?" Ran narrowed her eyes.
"Really!" Conan nodded firmly.
Ran tapped her chin. "But you always wait for me to get out of school before dinner. And why were you at the crime scene this morning? Wouldn't the school cafeteria have food?"
Before Conan could respond, Gojo suddenly shot up from his seat.
"The rat just left its hole!" he announced loudly.
The entire restaurant turned to stare.
"R-Rat?!" Ran yelped, instinctively jumping to Conan's side and glancing around in alarm. "Where?!"
Rolling his eyes, Geto exhaled. "Satoru, you mean Yamashita Ryo just finished his police statement and left the station, right?"
"Bingo. Near Shinjuku." Gojo nodded, stuffing one last bite of cheesecake into his mouth before rushing out of the restaurant. Geto followed without hesitation.
"Who?" Ran asked, still confused.
"The main suspect in last night's apartment murder," Conan replied, too preoccupied to explain further. He jumped down from his seat, scrambling to keep up.
"Hey! Conan, wait!"
Worried for his safety, Ran ran after him. Criminal suspects were dangerous, right? She couldn't just let him go alone.
Ten minutes later, the group arrived at a dimly lit alley near the Shinjuku Police Station.
"Conan, is it really safe for us to follow him?" Ran whispered, scanning the area cautiously.
"Someone provided him an alibi, so the police had to let him go for now. But Gojo-kun, Geto, and I all think he's suspicious."
"Then shouldn't we tell my dad?" Ran insisted.
Conan shuddered as he imagined Mouri Kogoro's loud, over-the-top reasoning. "No way. He'd just make things worse."
Ran: "..."
A moment later, Yamashita Ryo appeared, wearing a black suit with his hood up. His posture was relaxed—completely different from the nervous wreck they had seen at the crime scene.
Gojo and the others discreetly moved to a nearby bus stop, pretending to anxiously wait.
Yamashita scanned his surroundings before slipping into the alley.

Even in the afternoon, the alley was dark and narrow, the damp air heavy with the stench of cigarettes and alcohol. The faint sound of dripping water echoed through the space. Just as Yamashita stepped inside, footsteps approached from deeper within.
"Hey, looks like two people are coming," Ran murmured.
"No," Gojo corrected confidently. "Four."
Ran frowned. "How can you tell? It's too dark to see anything."
A rough voice echoed from the alleyway. "Yamashita, have you found your brother's USB drive?"
"The police have been swarming the crime scene since last night," Yamashita replied, shrugging. "Where the hell am I supposed to find it? I'll contact you when I have news."
"We helped you with an alibi, cleared your debts... but favors come with a price." The man's tone turned cold.
"Hmph. If your people hadn't panicked and killed those two cops, we might've had the USB by now." Yamashita scoffed.
Ran clamped a hand over her mouth, eyes wide. "Conan," she whispered urgently, "did they just confess to the murders?"
"Who's there?" Yamashita suddenly turned, eyes narrowing toward the alley entrance.
Ran took a step back.
A smirk curled across Yamashita's lips. "Ah... the eldest son of the Gojo family."
Gojo stepped forward, hands casually tucked into his pockets. "So you know me."
Yamashita studied him, barely able to make out his distinct white hair and tall frame against the dim alleyway. "Gojo Satoru, the Six Eyes user. Who in the sorcerer world doesn't know you?"
Ran turned stiffly to Conan. "Six Eyes?"
Conan forced a dry laugh. "Ignore him. He's just paranoid. That's why he kills people."
At that moment, four men stepped out of the shadows. They were all tall, clad in matching black suits. One had a jagged scar running down the left side of his face.
"So what if you have Six Eyes?" The scarred man sneered. "Sorcerers can't use jujutsu on regular people. There are five of us, and you've only got two minors, a girl, and a kid. If it comes down to a fight..." He cracked his knuckles. "Let's see if you can stop us."
