Everyone waited in bated breath as they waited for Khalifa to move or say something—afraid they could get killed if they made a single move before her.

Fortunately for them, Khalifa was surrounded by many loving men who immediately took her into their embrace.

Khalifa buried her face on Cauis’ protective chest, and she could also feel the love from the others emanating nearby.

Soon, she calmed, and so did everybody else.

After the dust settled, Khalifa and her party turned to leave for real.

Kylo sighed, wanting to come with them, but he had the heavy responsibility of rebuilding this place and keeping it from getting destroyed again.

Khalifa also heaved a deep breath as she looked at him. She held his large calloused hand with her soft ones, expressing her reluctance. "Kylo… if anyone annoys you, get me and I’ll melt them."

This made everyone shiver and they scurried away, finally dispersing so the team was given some space.

Kylo smiled a bit, amused, and he pulled her in closer, naturally entering an embrace.

She met his lips and he parted them, and their bodies flushed, expressing their reluctance to part.

When they parted, Kylo held her cheek. "I will come see you when everything is settled," he said, his low baritone voice filled with emotions and went straight to her heart.

She smiled. "I’ll wait for you."

When they entered the helicopter, Hugo stuck to Khalifa like glue. He embraced her the whole time, kicking everyone.

Hugo would also be dropped off to his own base next, which made him extra sticky and no one could pull him away from Khalifa.

The other men had no choice but to give way in the end, lest the tanned man demanded to have goodbye sex with Khalifa on the helicopter.

As they lifted off, they saw the crowd cheer for them. They were waving their hands, sending their gratitude, and wishing them well.

However, the ones in the helicopter only watched them with some detachment.

Kaize sneered, resting his elbow on the window sill. "Some people are so fickle," he said. After all they did, a few words could cast doubts in the majority of them.

"Don’t be too hard on them. Self-preservation is human nature," Cauis said, "Rather, the fact that they still mostly sided with us is good enough."

They nodded. Indeed. In these trying times, people would’ve been extremely paranoid. Even the smallest seed of doubt could’ve caused an avalanche if their team had been a little weaker and didn’t save lives.

Speaking of this, Khalifa couldn’t help but look at Sigmund. At this time, he was silently watching the skies outside, not talking with anyone. He was sitting next to Chris and Claire, who also joined in to get dropped at the Peace Base.

"You didn’t have to lie," she said to SIgmund, who turned to look at her, and she couldn’t help but stare into his striking red eyes.

He must’ve had his suspicions. With that big brain of his, he would’ve come to several conclusions on his own, ranked them up to the highest possibility.

After all, she had been watching him. She had been wondering what he’d do, but he never did anything—until he spoke for Jacob, that is.

Sigmund looked at her with that bland expression of his.

"Who said I lied?"

When they stared at him and asked him to say more, Sigmund didn’t say anything beyond "If he was, then your other lovers would’ve turned to zombies, too."

"..."

They tried prying more information but they only received his blank stare, and they could only end it with that.

It annoyed the other men, thinking he was being stingy, but Khalifa didn’t push him. As someone who had lived a long time in two lives and had encountered many people, she understood him more than the others.

She knew he probably needed to study more before getting into any more conclusions, and he wouldn’t utter anything that he was unsure of as facts.

Anyway, the group arrived at Hugo’s base a couple of hours later to drop him off.

It was a large mountain with only a small building visible from above. There was also a large concrete plateau which should be a helipad, but its shape and direction should allow for some small airplanes to land as well.

From above, it looked quite small and unimpressive, but inside… it was definitely larger than they imagined.

They would learn more about it as Hugo toured them like a real estate agent.

"Thanks to Kaize’s—which now I know is actually Khalifa’s— warning, my family and I managed to prepare this base!

"I transformed our biggest bunker—one built by my grandfather back when there were plenty of nuclear war threats, by the way—into an underground haven!"

He said so with pride, gently pulling Khalifa’s hand as they moved forward. The other men could only follow the tour, giving Hugo this bit of time with Khalifa.

They walked along the plain but sturdy hallways. They were about two meters wide, bathed in soft lighting from generous overhead fixtures. They soon got into a large atrium of sorts, going down at least 5 floors, giving them some idea of how deep the whole thing was.

This was a marvel of modern engineering, especially considering it was decades old.

"This place is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, from sustainable food sources to advanced medical facilities—we spared no expense to make this into a highly livable place even if the world outside collapsed on itself.

He first went to the communal rooms, comprising almost all of the accommodations of the base. These were dormitories with eight beds each, having small cabinets for each occupant and a shared bathroom.

There were also 4-bedroom rooms with bigger beds and better facilities for higher ups, and then he and a few family members naturally had their own bedrooms.

He then took the group to the fully stocked kitchen bustling with activity. It was meal time so most people were in the canteen, which now had about one or two hundred people or so.

"We can comfortably fit 1000 people here. If we want to squeeze in a bit, we can do about 5 to 6 times more."

They nodded, with Cauis even mapping out what he knew about the area. There were a few towns and two cities that were near this place. If Hugo wanted, they could also rescue people and get them here.

Of course, a few thousand wasn’t enough, so Hugo would have to choose who to save or not, which was a dilemma he wouldn’t want to be in.

"Who are these people?" Kaize asked interestedly as he saw a few children running around.

"The people here are our own people and their families," he said, "There are also a few with close friends."

"What about your family?" Khalifa asked.

Hugo smiled, happy for her interest. "I only have my grandma and aunt left. They should be in the amenities," he said, placing a peck on her forehead.

"I’ll introduce you later."

The other men’s eyes twitched at this interaction.

Why did Hugo say it like he was introducing his fiancee to the family?
